The Olympian gods like things tidy and legal; the Aesir would rather swing bulls by the legs. In the palace of Zeus, gods drink wine by the barrel; in Valhalla, gods polish their swords till they glow. The Greek gods are subtle and polite when they quarrel. The Norse gods enjoy dealing bone-breaking blows. But either way the mortals who worship them never get anything from them but the Law and the Sword. The gods they are strong, they are brave, they are clever; but for worshipers, Death is the only reward. -ed g.
