NIGHT OF THE CIVIL DEAD (1 of 3)
********************************

The comet flashed overhead, and a terrible transformation took
place. In every graveyard and mausoleum, The Dead stirred --
clawing their way to light and freedom. They were hungry. They
were indestructable. Unlike the movies, however, they were
entirely reasonable.

                          - * -

Somewhere in Kansas: a lonely farmhouse. Shambling forms erupt
from the tall corn to menace a terrified woman. She flees inside,
devoured by panic, screaming at every footfall on the porch, every
fist through glass, every shadow over her as she slumps in the
corner, defenseless....

"Lady!" gurgles one corpse, its mandible dangling crazily. "Can
you point us to a Stuckey's?"
