CONTINENTAL DRIFT

Geologists reacted with some surprise to the discovery that
plates are propelled, not by heat transport or gravity, but by
a quintillion insectoid legs scuttling across the ocean floor.
Our continents were tremendously large, slow, stupid creatures --
but they were motile and aware.

"So what you're saying," said the President incredulously, "is
that the Himalayan uplift is really just Asia and the Indian
Subcontinent locking horns?"

The biologists noded.  "It's a mating thing, sir; they both are
courting East Africa."

"What happens when one wins?"

One scientist polished her glasses.  "You might want to move 
troops out of Somalia, sir."
