THE FUN LADY

The children stir.  Could that be the tinkling of music coming up the
street?  Is it?  It IS!

It's the Fun Lady!

The neighborhood, quiet in the noontime heat, stirs at the slamming of
screen doors.  Plaintive, birdlike voices cajole credits from porch-
ensconced matrons.  The crickets fall silent.

The Fun Lady's truck is painted in neon pinks and greens.  The children
gather in the shade of the fold-down awning, small and eager.

The Fun Lady leans out of her truck, her paper hat slightly askew.  The
alligator clips in her hands spark, stinking of bitter ozone.

"Who's first?" she smiles.
