Inspector Anjaney Agashe is a rugged drug-addicted cop who gets rid of known criminals by killing them and making it look like an encounter. His daughter had been shot in a raid at Goa. Upon release, Advait immediately calls Agashe and informs him of an upcoming murder of a police officer and wishes him "Happy Solstice". The police officer who is also a good friend of Michael Rodrigues who is a cop who plays by the rules though his personal life is breaking down, as his wife, Teresa is having an affair with another man. Later after the murder, he learns that his friend and coworker, Victor, has been brutally murdered. At the crime scene, Michael meets Agashe and the two are instantly at odds with each other: Agashe wants to kill the murderer, while Michael wants him in prison. It is implied that Advait committed the murder, and slowly, his connections to both Agashe and Michael are revealed. Actually, five years ago, Advait, then a cheerful, happy-go-lucky guy, meets Sara Nambiar at a rave party in Goa. The two fall in love and decide to travel and party together as vagrants. One day, Sara finds out that she is pregnant with Advait's child. The two decide they will abort. At another rave party, Sara watches a young girl named Vani (Devika Vatsa) talking on the phone to her father, who is Agashe. Agashe then gatecrashes the same party to capture drug dealers there. Crossfire ensues and Vani gets shot by Agashe's bullet, dying in her father's arms. Sara witnesses this, seeing Agashe break down at the loss of his child. This affects her and she decides not to abort and quits her earlier decision to abort the child of Advait and hers. Vani's death leads to Agashe's alcohol and drug addiction, and his change in personality. Sara tells Advait of her decision not to abort the baby and that she no longer wants a nomad life. Advait, having a fear of commitment, leaves Sara and goes off towards the northern mountains to meet a friend. In the present day, Advait murders two more cops, Nitin and Deven (Prasad Jawde) and to the coincidence both were close friends of Michael and later Michael becomes suspicious of Jessie, a drug-addicted prostitute who is Advait's friend and has been helping him with the murders. Michael notices her in the room and followed her till her presiding place and on knowing this Jessie tries to burn down the evidence at her place but Michael enters and sees that he is also one of the targets on Advait's hit list. In a turn of events after killing 3 officers, Advait surrenders himself to Agashe. Michael's past, and what really happened to Sara and Advait is revealed: Michael grew up in an abusive family. As an adult, he is about to marry his girlfriend Teresa, but due to the abuse, he is uncomfortable with sex and intimacy and rejects Teresa when she touches him before marriage giving the excuse that he doesn't want such relations before marriage. However, fearing that his lack of sexual experience will make him "less than a man", Michael goes to Jessie to lose his virginity. Sara has been living with Jessie after Advait left her. Michael enters while Jessie was away to the market and thinks that Sara is the prostitute. In the meantime, Advait returns to Goa, having realized his mistake. He arrives at Jessie's house, only to find Michael trying to rape Sara. He intervenes and calls the police. Michael's cop friends, Nitin, Deven, and Victor, arrive. In the police van, Advait and Sara reconcile. Instead of the station, Michael and his posse drag Advait and Sara onto a bridge, planning to frame them for drug peddling to avoid the scandal of Michael, a cop, visiting a prostitute. Michael injects a lethal drug into the couple before throwing Sara off the bridge while Advait is sentenced to five years in jail. Advait has been taking revenge for Sara's death. In the present day, Michael reveals to Advait at the station that he raped and killed Jessie after the house burnt. He then leaves so that Agashe can do his "encounter". However, before leaving, Michael says "Happy Solstice" to Agashe that makes Agashe realize that he is the reason behind Advait's vengeance as Advait had been calling Agashe before each murder and saying the same thing. Agashe takes Advait to the same bridge where it all started, where Advait tells him that Michael and his friends killed Sara. At the same time, Michael goes home and sees that Teresa is about to leave him. Michael suffers a psychotic break and attempts to murder his wife. As he is choking her, he is suddenly injected in the neck with a drug. When he turns around, he sees Sara, alive and well wearing the same jacket as Advait was wearing. It is shown in a flashback that Jessie had saved Sara from the fall but Sara lost her baby. Over the course of five years, Sara and Advait had been planning revenge together and it is also shown that the murders were committed by both Sara and Advait together. Suddenly a call comes to the assistant of Agashe and it is informed that Michael has been murdered in his own home. Advait laughs as a shocked Agashe wonder who killed Michael if Advait is right in front of him. He reluctantly releases Advait as there is no evidence and Teresa tells the police she saw a man, thus protecting Sara. Advait and Sara find peace and start a new life. The film ends with Agashe getting a phone call from an unknown female caller, informing him about an upcoming murder just like he was informed by Advait, thus paving way for a sequel. ===== The story opens with a female voice narrating about herself and her love story with Ibrahim (Ashok). The minister is exposed, and Gowtham is invited to a night party at the same resort where he sleeps in room 118 again. When the dream recurs, he visits a psychiatrist named Dr. Athmaram Divakar, who advises him not to take the dream seriously. Soon, a car chase with the home minister's henchmen takes Gowtham to a road he saw in his dreams. Jumping into the nearby lake, he discovers an empty car belonging to a church. The Church Father, Francis, tells Gowtham it was driven by a woman named Esther. A strange gate symbol leads Gowtham to a shut-down printing press where he discovers missing posters of the girl in his dreams, Aadhya. He later realizes that Aadhya went missing and his dream appeared on full moon days. Believing the visitors during the other six full moon days to have had the same dream, he sets out to contact them but is contacted by Aadhya, who tells him not to look for her. He uses police help to trace the phone number and chases a van containing the phone but finds it belonging to none. Gowtham visits the office of Sai Videos office, who filmed an event at the resort, and in the footage sees Aadhya with a man who is soon kidnapped by some goons and a chase ensues, resulting in his death. Gowtham then goes to meet Francis and identifies a nun as the woman who contacted him as Aadhya. She then reveals that Francis told her to make the call and even lied about Esther to Gowtham. He then heads for Vizag to meet Francis, following which the nun is killed. Esther is revealed to be the daughter of Francis, who is then shot by the goons. Kannamma doesn't answer. The next day Kannamma awakens and is shocked to hear about preparations of engagement. Kannamma cries, thinking her Bharathi mama accepted this. Kannamma's father learns of the engagement and stops it. Soundharya lashes out at him, saying Kannamma can't bear the children. The other day Kannamma had some symptoms of pregnancy So with the advice of Arivumani(kavya)(Bharathi’s sister) she takes a pregnancy test and it turns out to be positive and tells Soundharya Bharathi doesn't need to marry again as Kannamma is pregnant. This shocks everyone, including Bharathi. Kannamma hears of the pregnancy and is happy. Soundharya starts to care for Kannamma as she bears the heir of their house. Meanwhile, Bharathi once again goes to test whether or not he can have children. It is revealed that he can, but Venba changes the reports to state he cannot. It is revealed that Venba is responsible for Bharathi's misconception. Venba tells her paternal uncle that she has loved Bharathi from her college days. Bharathi loved another girl, Hema(Alya Manasa). She planned an accident when they were going on a road trip and she killed Hema and bribed the doctor to say Bharathi cannot have children so Bharathi doesn't marry anyone else and so she could complete her studies in the USA and return and marry him. Ironically Bharathi is a Cardiologist and Venba is a Gynaecologist. After seeing Soundharya love and care for Kannamma, Venba attempts to kill her multiple times but fails. Venba approaches the serial killer Durga who only kills bad people. Venba convinces him that Kannamma cheated on her friend Bharathi and that he wants to get rid of her. Durga accepts the deal and enters as the car driver especially for Kannamma. Kannamma is sad that Bharathi is behaving oddly with her and showing no sign of happiness for the pregnancy. Kannamma goes to her parents where even her father treats her weirdly, so tearful Kannamma returns. Meanwhile, Durga continues his plan for killing Kannamma. First, he tries to kill her when she goes to the temple along with the family. But, Bharathi comes to the rescue and saves Kannamma. A happy Soundharya continues to shower her with lots of affection. She plans to build a hospital in the name of Kannamma, despite Bharathi's refusal. Durga again plans to kill Kannamma by creating a cut in the water heater so that Kannamma may die with an electric shock. But, Nimmi, the housemaid gets the electric shock, which becomes unfatal. Soundharya then starts up entertainment by mimicry and acting, to bring some more happiness in the house. Here, Anjali notices something wrong with Akhil. He leaves in between and involves himself in secret meetings with an unknown person. It is revealed that Akhil was offering help to a girl named Meena by offering remuneration for her designing course and helping her to be a model for his photoshoot. Soundharya then prepares everything to celebrate Kannamma's baby shower with pomp and grandeur. Noticing this as a good chance to kill Kannamma, Venba gifts a poisoned lipstick to Kannamma. Kannamma becomes very happy in her baby shower with her mother-in-law's affection but is unhappy with the weird behavior of Bharathi and Shanmugam. It is also revealed that instead of Kannamma, Anjali has used the poisoned lipstick and so, she faints. Akhil and the family-run into shock and takes the unconscious Anjali to the hospital. An unsuccessful Venba somehow manages to save Anjali by wiping off the lipstick. But the innocent Anjali assumes that she has fallen unconscious due to food poisoning. After the baby shower, Kannamma feels restless as Shanmugam contemplates to speak with her. She feels very sombre but tries to overcome sadness. The next day, while Durga enters Barathi's home, he suffers an epileptic attack. But, a kind Kannamma does her best to save him by offering first aid at the right time. This makes Durga realize that Kannamma is indeed a kind-hearted woman. After recovering from the attack, Durga confronts Venba by stating that Kannamma can never be a wrong woman and his conscience supports it. Venba immediately spills out the beans that Kannamma was indeed a good woman and that she was planning to kill her. Shocked by this fact, Durga warns Venba to refrain herself from doing wrong things, but Venba refuses. An angry Durga challenges Venba that he will protect Kannamma from any evil and remain loyal to her forever. Alarmed by this, Venba tries to get rid of Durga and Kannamma altogether by hiring another henchman named Babu, who is Durga's friend-turned-enemy. When Kannamma, Arivu, and Durga are on their way to the temple, Babu tries to kill them by hitting their car with a lorry and succeeds. But, Kannamma and Arivu, noticing that they are in danger and that the car is in fire due to the accident, plans to escape. But, a kind Kannamma saves the unconscious Durga, even when they were in danger. The three then go to a hospital and informs the family about the accident. Arivu and Kannamma suffer minor injuries whereas Durga got a heavy injury. On recovery, Durga confesses to Kannamma that he was recruited to kill her and that Barathi was the one who has asked him to do so. A furious Kannamma then goes to her home and prepares to leave the home to save herself and her unborn child. Upon her angry expression, the family gets confused and asks her the reason why she is taking such a solemn decision. Kannamma then reveals to the entire family that the attacks that the family has witnessed earlier were planned indeed by Barathi and it was on the motive to eliminate Kannamma and her unborn child. Soundharya angrily argues with Kannamma that Barathi is her child and he would never take such a decision to kill a human, being a doctor himself. Bharathi then enters the scene. Soundharya questions Bharathi on why he was restless these many days and asks him whether Kannamma's statement was true. Bharathi promises on Soundharya that he did not plan to kill Kannamma. He also states that he was infertile and was not eligible to give birth to a baby. And that was why he was shocked at Kannamma's pregnancy and showed anger toward her. He even shows his fertility test reports to the entire family and says that Kannamma has cheated him by having an affair with another man and that the baby she holds was not his child. He also says that her father also knows before the wedding that he was infertile. Upon hearing this, a furious Kannamma streaks like a fire. She argues with Barathi and says that he will wash her feet with his tears when he knows the truth and leaves the family. Other family members try to stop her but Soundarya gets a Heart attack seeing kanamma. Then take her to the hospital and nurses her. Meanwhile, Akilan goes to search Kannamma but ends up in vain. Venba meets Kanamma and asks her to abort the baby because she has no money. Kannamma gives a handful to Venba. She also goes to meet her father and says she'll repay him for his deeds. She works in a roadside hotel with an old couple for living. Soundarya searches Kanamma and meets with an accident. Kanamma rescues her and donates blood to save her without knowing the family. She goes to a petrol bunk held by women and works there. Soundarya and Venu meet Varun know the truth that Kanamma treats like a brother. Barathi is suspended for drinking alcohol and trying to do an operation. Barathi on Venba's advice decides to divorce Kanamma. Kannamma says she'll only divorce him after giving birth to her baby and prove it's their child. Meanwhile, Durga learns the truth that Venba loves Barathi and she tried to kill Kanamma nd Kanamma learns the truth. Cobb, now the DDF admiral, is worried that humans will lose unless they manage to steal a Krell hyperdrive, as the Superiority is sending increasing numbers of warships into battle. Rodge and the engineers discover footage showing a creature known as a 'Delver' consuming and destroying the first inhabitants of Detritus - Spensa recognizes it as the eyes that she sees in the Nowhere when using her cytonic powers. A cytonic alien named Alanik crash lands on Detritus and cytonically implants her destination into Spensa's mind. Spensa learns that Alanik was traveling from her own backwater world to a Superiority space station called Starsight to train as a pilot. Using M-Bot's holographic technology, Spensa disguises herself as Alanik and, using Alanik's coordinates, teleports herself, M-Bot, and Doomslug to Starsight. Spensa poses as Alanik in order to infiltrate the pilot program and steal a hyperdrive. Spensa quickly finds herself caught in a political game between Cuna, a dione government minister, and Winzik, head of the department that is battling Spensa and her people. Spensa is put into a training flight consisting of the misfit dione Morriumur, Captain Hesho and his crew of tiny kitsen, the figment Vapor, and a rare Superiority human, Brade. The pilots are being trained specifically to fight delvers, which can be drawn into this realm by overuse of cytonics. The humans summoned delvers which destroyed numerous planets during a past war, and while these delvers are long since gone, there is suspicion that they may soon reappear. Spensa befriends all her flightmates except the stand-offish Brade, and she and the group frequently run training exercises on a fake delver maze (the delver's core). Back on Detritus, Jorgen begins manifesting cytonic powers. Spensa builds a small drone with M-Bot's help and sneaks it into a battleship engine room. She recovers the drone and learns that the Superiority hyperdrives (which don't attract delvers) are powered by slugs like Doomslug. Spensa is caught by Cuna, but Spensa realizes that Cuna is actually pushing for species integration and peace with the humans in the government. Spensa reveals her true self to Cuna, and the two agree to potential peace talks. Winzik mobilizes the pilots against the Detritus humans in a bold political move. Spensa reveals herself to Brade, trying to earn Brade's trust, but Brade ousts Spensa, and she is forced to flee to her home planet, abandoning M-Bot. The Superiority arrives and a battle commences; Spensa realizes that Winzik and Brade are plotting to summon a delver and frame the humans for it. As the battle rages, Spensa enlists Vapor and Hesho's crew to stop Brade from summoning the delver. However, Brade kills Hesho in a dogfight and they are too late to stop her from summoning the monstrous creature. A desperate Spensa cytonically redirects it to Starsight instead. Realizing what she has done, Spensa teleports herself, Vapor, and the surviving kitsen to Starsight, where they are joined by Morriumur. Morriumur is able to guide Spensa to the heart of the delver maze, where she is able to send the delver back to its own realm before it destroys the station. On Detritus, Jorgen uses his cytonic ability to discover a hidden cavern filled with hyperdrive slugs. Spensa is cared for on Starsight, where she and Cuna are optimistic for successful peace talks. However, Winzik throws a coup and frames Spensa for multiple murders. Spensa helps Cuna to safety, and recovers Doomslug and M-Bot, who has transferred his consciousness to the drone as Winzik's forces dismantled him. With Winzik's forces closing in, Spensa and her companions escape into the Nowhere. ===== ===== In present-day Saitama, Aimi and her parents are driving to an engagement ceremony. They break into a bauble in order to raid a cache of fuel. Barely escaping 'twinkle-heads' found inside, they retreat back to space. Surt and Adrana believe they are being followed by another ship, but Fura dismisses the concern. A book is found on board that documents the history of Occupations, but in addition there is a second timeline that hints at the existence of "Shadow Occupations". Revenger is struck by a photon storm, and it's decided they should travel to Wheel Strizzardy (a wheel world) on the outer reaches of the Congregation. While en route they are shot at by the still hidden ship trailing them, injuring Strambli. Arriving at Wheel Strizzardy the crew take on fake identities and bribe their way onto the station. Strambli is given over to the care of Dr. Eddralder. The crew meets with Mister Glimmery who is infected with the "glowy" like Fura, in his presence is an alien Crawly named Cuttle. Afterwards they are escorted by Sneed to another part of the wheel to find accommodations. The crew goes out to secure supplies, but when they return they find Cuttle skulking near their rooms. Cuttle falls off a balcony and dies. Adrana and Prozor are accused of his murder by two Crawlies who show up on the scene. While on the station Fura manages to capture Lagganvor, a former associate of Bosa Sennen, who knows the whereabouts of The Miser, a bauble holding Bosa's cache of quoins. Merrix is Dr. Eddralder's daughter and is being used by Glimmery to ensure he is not poisoned by the doctor's glowy treatments. But Eddralder ends up slipping a poison to Glimmery anyway. Eddralder leaves six syringes with an antidote, and joins the crew of the Revenger with Merrix, promising to radio back how to cure the poison. Lagganvor also goes along with the crew. They travel to The Miser and once inside they find trams that hold more quoins than any of them have ever seen. As the trams near the central chamber the quoins begin glowing bright white and emit a scream that's heard inside their heads. They separate the trams and find that the quoins have been reset to seemingly random denominations. Returning to Revenger they discover the same is true throughout the 20,000 worlds, and fear that this financial event may cause the end of the Thirteenth Occupation. Adrana works out that Lagganvor is Pol Rackamore's brother (Brysca) who took on the identity to get revenge for his brother's death. Their plan at the end is to go into hiding by pursuing the object that Adrana believes is orbiting the Old Sun at intervals coinciding with Shadow Occupations. ===== Man Like Mobeen follows the life of the titular Mobeen as he spends time with his friends Nate and Eight and, in the absence of their parents, raises his much younger sister, Aqsa, in Small Heath, Birmingham. German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger is elected Pope Benedict XVI; Bergoglio receives the second-highest vote count. Seven years later, the Catholic Church is embroiled in the Vatican leaks scandal, and Benedict's tenure has been tainted by public accusations regarding his role in the coverup. Bergoglio has submitted his resignation as archbishop, but the Vatican has not responded. As he prepares to go to Rome and personally deliver his resignation, he is summoned to Vatican City. Bergoglio and Benedict meet at the Palace of Castel Gandolfo, the Pope's summer residence. The two debate the roles of God and the church. Benedict recounts what led him to the priesthood and talks about his interests. The two watch Benedict's favorite TV show, Kommissar Rex, which further delays their discussion about Bergoglio's resignation. Bergoglio recounts his early life and path into the church. He ended his marital engagement and joined the Jesuits. He was met by Father Franz Jalics and Father Orlando Yorio, who become his spiritual friends. Benedict rejects Bergoglio's resignation, saying the world would perceive it as a vote of no confidence in his leadership and weaken the Catholic Church. Benedict and Bergoglio put aside their differences and chat informally, gradually warming to each other. The next day, the two go to the Vatican by helicopter. Benedict continues to avoid discussing Bergoglio's resignation. Benedict meets with Bergoglio in the Room of Tears within the Sistine Chapel, where he confides his intention to resign the papacy. Shocked, Bergoglio objects and argues for church tradition and continuity. Benedict says his opinions regarding tradition are different now and believes change is essential. Benedict says Bergoglio could be his successor, but Bergoglio rejects the idea, citing the perception that he had collaborated with the Argentine military dictatorship, and his failure to protect his friends and confront the junta may have damaged his reputation. Following the "Dirty War", Bergoglio was removed as head of the Argentinian Society of Jesus and exiled to serve as an ordinary parish priest to the poor for the next ten years. Over time, Father Jalics reconciled with Bergoglio, but Bergoglio regrets never reconciling with Father Yorio. Memories of his actions and inaction during the dictatorship continually haunt him. Benedict comforts Bergoglio, reminding him that the freedom to choose to help is often stifled; he gives Bergoglio absolution. Then Benedict confesses he was aware of Father Maciel's long-term sexual misconduct and regrets staying silent. He no longer hears God's words and affirms his wish to abdicate. Bergoglio comforts Benedict and offers him absolution as well. The two emerge from the room, surprising tourists. Benedict goes outside to greet the masses and take selfies with them. Bergoglio departs for Argentina. One year later, Pope Benedict XVI delivers his resignation to the world. Bergoglio is elected as his successor in the 2013 papal conclave and becomes Pope Francis. One night, they happen to attend a party, enjoying themselves. On the other hand, rich boys Vishwa and Venkatesh take their friend, an injured Adhik Ramajayam, to the hospital. Adhik had been hit in the head and is bleeding profusely. However, the boys decide not to file a police complaint. Meanwhile, the women hurriedly return home from the party, agitated over something, but they try to forget it and carry on with their lives. During her morning exercise, Meera is observed by Bharath Subramaniam, a grim man living in their neighbourhood who was a successful lawyer and a loving husband to his wife Kalyani years ago. Kalyani had died due to pregnancy complications when Bharath had to leave her alone at home due to an important case. This causes Bharath to break down mentally and retire from his profession, coping up with his depression through the use of medications. Bharath senses from the look on Meera's face that something unpleasant had been going on in her life. Later, Meera files a complaint against Adhik and his friend as they had started causing misery in her friends' lives. Learning of this, Adhik orchestrates a gang to kidnap Meera and molest her, while threatening her to withdraw the complaint. She is later dropped back at home, but is arrested the next day on charges of prostitution and attempted murder by Adhik. Bharath learns of Meera's plight from her friends and fights the gang that aided Adhik's friends, capturing the main goon and handing him over to the police. He also returns to his profession by offering to help the women by representing them in their case. Soon a case is filed. Adhik's side is represented by Sathyamoorthy. Sathyamoorthy presents the events from Adhik's allegations that Meera and her friends were encountered by Adhik and his friends who then slept with them after having drinks. Adhik is hit on the head by Meera as a result of nonpayment, labelling the women as prostitutes. He bases this on the fact that Meera has a family but lives alone, Famitha having a relationship with an older man, and Andrea moving to Chennai from North India. Meera and her friends deny the allegations and state that the men tried to sexually assault them, prompting Meera to hit Adhik on the head with a bottle in self-defense. Bharath represents the women and bases their statement on the fact that a woman has the right to say no. Bharath and Sathyamoorthy question the witnesses and the women individually in the subsequent days, with Bharath's investigation proving successful in favour of the women. Towards the end of the trial, Bharath questions Adhik, who arrogantly says that "girls born in good families don't party or drink." Bharath, however, holds a photo of Adhik's sister attending a party and having drinks in the courtroom, causing Adhik to lose his cool and curse Meera and her friends, stating that they "reaped what they sowed." Consequently, he blurts out that he tried to rape Meera, shocking Sathyamoorthy. Bharath concludes the case by criticising the regressed views of the society where women are stereotyped as prostitutes if they come home late, yearn to be independent, drink and so on, but men are not affected by this. He also puts forth the fact that a wrong done is wrong; be it a man or a woman, there is no partiality before the law. The case ends with Adhik and his friends getting arrested. ===== ===== The film begins with Aravind (Kathir) waiting for someone and then starting to remember his love life. Ayan Ranjan, a St. Stephen's College, Delhi graduate and an Indian Police Service officer, is assigned to Laalgaon as the Additional Superintendent of Police and is warmly welcomed by officers Brahmadatt Singh and Kisan Jatav. Ayan encounters various forms of caste discrimination as soon as he arrives in the village, and periodically shares what he observes over the phone to his wife, Aditi. Local villagers come to Ayan's reception asking the officers to find the missing girls, but are turned down. Ayan reunites with his college friend Satyendra Rai, who behaves suspiciously throughout the night. The next morning, the girls are found hanged from a tree, while a third girl, Pooja, is reported missing. Ayan orders Brahmadatt to file a FIR and to obtain the postmortem report for the deceased girls. The girls' autopsy yields evidence that they were gang raped, but Brahmadatt prevents the release of this information and instead pushes a narrative suggesting that the girls, who were cousins, were intimate and thus hanged by their fathers in an honor killing. Meanwhile, Jatav and a junior officer are threatened and their vehicle set on fire by followers of Nishaad, the leader of a group of activists within the village who seek speedy justice for the crime. Ayan questions Jatav about this the next day and becomes determined to solve the case. Gaura, Pooja's sister, informs Ayan that the girls used to work for a local builder named Anshu Naharia, who slapped Pooja after the girls asked for a raise in their salary of 3 rupees. Ayan decides to call Anshu for inquiry, even though Bhramadatt tries to persuade him not to do so, as Anshu is the son of local Minister Ramlal Naharia. During his interrogation, Anshu says that he slapped the girls to remind their entire caste of their place in society. Ayan, disgusted by the moral corruption of the village and its police force, posts on the police bulletin board a copy of Article 15 of the Constitution of India, which prohibits discrimination based on race, sex, religion, caste or birthplace. Ayan meets with Dr. Malti Ram, the assistant coroner who performed the autopsy, and finds out that contrary to her official report, the girls were raped and then murdered. He asks her to go to Lucknow to examine the DNA samples and to contact only him, realizing that local law enforcement is conspiring with Ramlal Naharia to cover up the case. Meanwhile, Mahantji, a Brahmin politician vying for a local election, has formed an alliance with the head of the Laalgaon Dalit community in a show of inter-caste unity, but Nishaad sees the display as a disingenuous political ploy and plans to protest it. Ayan tries to persuade Nishad to call off the protest so he has men to help search for Pooja; Nishaad refuses, but allows some of his men to aid Ayan's search. Ayan soon gets a call from Malti, who confirms that Anshu was the one who gang-raped and murdered the two girls. Ayan gets an arrest warrant for Anshu and raids his house, but Anshu is not present. However, Ayan spots a school bus that was seen by local villagers around the time of the girls' disappearance, and investigates the nearby school (which is owned by Anshu), where he finds evidence from the scene of girls' torture and rape. Elsewhere, Anshu is staying under protection from Brahmadatt, who is revealed to be one of the rapists. Brahmadatt kills Anshu to save himself. Panikar, a high- ranking CBI officer, arrives in Laalgaon and suspends Ayan from the case. Ayan refuses to give up his efforts and tracks down Satyendra, who admits that he was at a party hosted by Anshu the night of the crime, and that he witnessed Anshu, Brahmadatt, and police officer Nihal Singh (who works closely with Ayan) rape the girls while severely drunk and later hang their dead bodies. Ayan confronts Nihal, who commits suicide out of remorse. Jatav arrests Brahmadatt on Ayan's command. Panikar attempts to threaten Ayan into dropping the case, but Ayan reveals he has already submitted all his evidence to the Home Minister, and sharply criticizes the bigotry and injustice against people of lower castes among Indian law enforcement. Ayan then leads other officers through a large swamp in search of Pooja. They emerge on the other side in a jungle where they find a severely dehydrated Pooja hiding inside a pipe. They rescue her and with her statement, Brahmadutt gets eleven years of imprisonment as punishment. Mahantji wins the election hands down. ===== The film revolves around four lead characters: Chinnu (Prabha), Saranya (Dwaraka), Arun Vijay (Shyam Ganesh) and Saranya's father (Manikka Vinayagam) who are travelling separately in the same train. However, the group's ideas become a threat to the ruling Freyjagard Empire, who promote atheism and social Darwinist belief that only the strong nobility shall rule and the weak commoners must obey the nobles or suffer punishment. Some of the other political prisoners, including Denis Goldberg, helped to create and refine the details of the planned escape. ===== On Hallowe'en night, in a West Village townhouse, babysitter Elizabeth carves a Jack O'Lantern out of a pumpkin with the help of Jack, the boy she is looking after, his terrier Oscar barking and watching excitedly. She is vexed because her boyfriend Elliott is running late. The job done, she puts the seeds on a tray and cooks them in the oven. After, all three of them eat a few seeds, when Jack begins to choke. Elizabeth tries to perform the Heimlich maneuver but fails and the boy passes out. Not knowing what else to do, she takes a knife and attempts to perform a tracheotomy so he can breathe. Blood spurts when she cuts a hole in his neck, and she notices something that may be the seed and attempts to dig it out with the knife; it turns out to be a long vine. Jack's abdomen swells underneath his shirt and explodes. Horrified, Elizabeth notices her own belly beginning to swell. Using the knife, she cuts across it in the manner of a Caesarean section, and pumpkins and thick vines explode from her body, and her head slumps down. Oscar whines. Outside, Elliott finally arrives and enters the townhouse. He is heard calling for her briefly, and vines are seen creeping quickly within across the windows. ===== Sakthivel "Sakthi" is a young boy who dreams of becoming a superhero, like Shaktimaan. After being ridiculed by his teacher and classmates for believing that Shaktimaan is real, Sakthi tries to prove it by falling off the terrace of his school, injuring himself in the process. His father (Azhagam Perumal) tries to convince Sakthi that Shaktimaan is fictional by showing the disclaimer of actor Mukesh Khanna advising viewers that the events depicted in the show are purely fictitious, causing Sakthi to abandon his hopes of becoming a superhero. Years later, Sakthi (Sivakarthikeyan) and Inbaraj "Ink" (Robo Shankar) are friends who earn their livelihood as educational brokers and run a xerox shop in their neighbourhood that houses a certificate forgery unit to help the needy secure their desired jobs at the expense of huge commissions. Sakthi bumps across Meera (Kalyani Priyadarshan), a social worker at an educational fair, and falls in love with her. Meera happens to be the inspiration of Mathi (Ivana), a brilliant girl who aspires to become an aeronautical engineer. Mathi devises an engine that runs on saltwater as a measure to help her father (Elango Kumaravel) and many other thwart the problem of rising petrol prices. Meera soon learns of Sakthi's true profession and confronts him, where she learns the reason behind his dark profession; his father disowned him after Sakthi confessed to him that, inspite of securing district rank in the higher secondary examinations, he had sold his certificate in order to obtain money to save his father through surgery as he was suffering from a fatal lung infection. Meera advises him to help Mathi secure an admission in an engineering college without any payment, in order to justify his actions. Sakthi tries to secure admission for Mathi but to no avail. He learns that the only way to help Mathi secure a seat is to demonstrate the practical applications of her engine, which is rejected by Sathyamoorthy (Arjun), Mathi's teacher who runs a school for the academically weak but brilliant children. Sakthi bypasses his warnings and demonstrates the engine at an educational fair by attaching it to an autorickshaw. This attracts the attention of the henchman of Mahadev (Abhay Deol). In turn, he promises a seat for Mathi with a full scholarship. The next day, the autorickshaw is seized by the police, and Mathi is arrested on grounds of Patent violation. The court convicts her guilty of the charges, which distraught her. She attempts suicide by falling off a running train. Sakthi takes her to the hospital, only for the doctors to delay her treatment, and she eventually succumbs to her injuries. Sakthi and Ink are also convicted guilty and are placed on the wanted list for aiding Mathi. Sakthi, on the run, decides that the only way to avenge Mathi's death and prove her innocence is to confront the company issuing the patents. Due to his experience in forging certificates, he easily fishes out the fact that the patent was forged by the company under Mahadev's orders but is attacked in the process when he is rescued by Sathyamoorthy wearing a mask. Sathyamoorthy explains to him that Mahadev is a corrupt business tycoon whose aim is to wipe out innovation in work culture. He also subdues brilliant students and subjects them to lobotomy, rendering their frontal cortex unusable, therefore reducing them to his "puppets". He uses their innovations to sell them to foreign companies and earn profits. Sathyamoorthy also explains his past; being an advocate of innovation and logical thinking, he tried various ways to inculcate the same in the school curriculum but was faced with opposition and his school was eventually detonated by Mahadev's men, killing the brilliant students. Sathyamoorthy survived the incident, but was beaten up and paralysed by Mahadev's cronies, when he went to avenge them. Thereafter, Sathyamoorthy secretly nurtured the surviving children away from Mahadev in the outskirts of the city. Sakthi, upon hearing Sathyamoorthy's story, decides to fight the system along with him and the children, donning the mantle of the "Mask." Using the gadgets developed by the children and Sathyamoorthy's training, Sakthi fights through Mahadev's henchmen and eventually learns the truth. Sathyamoorthy apparently sacrifices himself in the struggle, prompting Sakthi to telecast the innovative inventions of students and explaining to the audience that children should be given the freedom to follow their passion and not be just mere bookworms. He also tells the parents to check their childrens' rough notebooks to find out their interests and desires and encourage the same. Sakthi's father, who happens to hear the telecast, finds Sakthi's rough book and realizes his mistake of mistreating Sakthi. In the final fight, Mahadev's plans are foiled and Sakthi subjects him to lobotomy, disabling him permanently. Six months later, Sakthi, while still on the wanted list, runs the school along with Meera on the outskirts of the city. A police officer (Prem) approaches him and takes him in his jeep around the city, where Sakthi finds major developments in the city due to the innovations of Mathi and other brilliant students. The officer tosses away the documents relating to Sakthi's charges as he had opened his eyes about his child's dreams and requests Sakthi to continue on with the mantle of the Mask. In the post- credits scene, it is also revealed that Sathyamoorthy is alive and is helping Sakthi in his missions. ===== In a story set in the Wild West, an anonymous killer plots to steal a gold mine from its rightful owner. The man is the town's undertaker and attends a funeral service. He then attends a church service where the preacher claims that the congregation regrets banning alcohol, gambling and prostitution in order to make it a "Christian" town. After church the man talks with his friend Ed who offers to babysit his kids if he ever needs. The man and his family enter a store where his son asks if he wants a gun, to which he replies he has a rifle. Meanwhile, a strange man enters and grunts aggressively at the storekeeper and stares at the man's wife. Back at home, the man and his wife discuss how they never made it to California (their goal) and the man wishes to move on now that the "Christian" town has quieted down. His wife refuses to leave. In the middle of the night, three men approach and ask for a man named Bill Crabtree. Though he gives the men directions, they demand that he go with them. He takes the men to Bill's wife's house because Bill left town. The man reveals that he is a bounty hunter looking for Bill. Afterward, he asks to be taken to the saloon where he learns that the preacher demanded the innkeeper stop serving alcohol or he would burn the saloon down. Over a drink, the men introduce themselves as Dutch Albert (John Cusack), Dumb Dumb (whose tongue is cut out) and Sicily, an Italian man who does not speak English. The man introduces himself as Patrick Tate, an Irish immigrant. Dutch claims that he understands how it feels to be an outsider like Patrick, an Irish Catholic. Since the innkeeper does not have any food, the men return to Patrick's house where his wife, Audrey, makes a meal for them. Dumb Dumb (the man from the store) leers at her. After the meal, Dutch returns to the innkeeper and buys his hotel to turn it back into a saloon. One month later, it is in full swing with gambling and whores. The innkeeper (Jim Emmett) goes to get Patrick because a man "accidentally" died in the saloon. The sheriff is suspicious, but everyone is silent when asked what happened. At the funeral, the preacher accuses the sheriff of dereliction and demands justice. That night, Dutch wakes Patrick and requests two coffins. He takes Patrick to a dugout hole where he kills Bill Crabtree and one other man. Patrick is beginning to make more money than usual due to the string of deaths. At the saloon, Dutch cleans out a young man in cards who cannot pay his debt. When Dutch refuses to let him leave, he pulls a gun, so Dutch kills him. He claims to have killed the boy in self-defense, and no one says otherwise. Everyone hears the gunshots across the street in the church and goes to see the body; the sheriff is increasingly agitated with Dutch but can do nothing. Later, back at the store, Dumb Dumb follows Audrey inside and touches her face. He grunts unintelligibly but appears to say "I love you" before leaving in shame. When Audrey tells Patrick, he claims no harm will come to her. Mrs. Crabtree goes to see Dutch at the saloon and offers to work as a whore because she is starving. Dutch says he will take her and the daughter, but not her alone, as whores. At Patrick's house, a wagon goes by and a couple claims they are headed to California. They ask where the saloon is. Shortly after leaving, Patrick hears gunshots, and finds the man dead in the street, presumably killed by either Dumb Dumb or Sicily. After preparing the body, he gives his children candy and his wife a new dress, but she refuses because it is fancy and she will look out of place. Offended, he goes into town with his friend and has a drink in the saloon. He has a tense encounter with Dutch, but a shot is heard upstairs - Mrs. Crabtree's daughter couldn't handle being a whore and shoots the man who paid for her. Patrick is commissioned to build a gallows to hang the girl, and his wife says if he does it he is guilty for her death. They argue about how they have no place in the village, but Patrick wants to stay because of the money he is making off of the murders. The next day, the girl is hung. Dumb Dumb follows Audrey home and stalks her into the back yard, brandishing a knife, but before he can get to her Patrick comes up behind him and strangles him, hiding the body in the hung girl's coffin. Now realizing the true depths of his depravity, Patrick agrees to leave with Audrey the next day. That night, the preacher awakes and takes a cask of oil across the street and sets the saloon ablaze. Dutch kills him and the sheriff who comes to his defense. Patrick takes up the sheriff's gun but walks away from the encounter. The next day, while he buries the two, Sicily is sent to kill Audrey. She hides the children and readies Patrick's rifle and when Sicily enters, shoots his arm. They fight and she stabs him in the stomach. She takes one of his guns and they shoot each other. Patrick's children retrieve him from the graveyard and he returns home. He asks Ed to take care of his family if he does not come back. Patrick retrieves his money from its hiding place and spends it all on a blunderbuss and pistol. He loads the blunderbuss with nails and two silver coins, which he puts on the dead people's eyes. He enters the church as seen in the first scene, where he finds Dutch and Jim Emmett. Dutch realizes Patrick is now full of only hate, and draws on him. Patrick shoots the blunderbuss into Dutch, who shoots him in the gut, then turns his pistol on Jim, killing him. He walks home and sees his son on the porch, who asks if he is dying. He tells his son that he loves him, his sister and mother and to go get Ed. Patrick remains on the porch and presumably dies. ===== The film begins Surya (Sanjeev) with joining a school as an aerobics instructor.
