With no memory of his arrival, and the hotel being run by few robotic assistants, he eventually finds a circular phone, connecting him to 'Cooper'. During breakfast, the world slowly begins to distort around him. Cooper contacts him soon afterwards, initially attempting to lead him to the rooftop, explaining that he is trapped within a simulation against his will. However, due to the system rejecting Alex's credentials, it is forced upon him to explore each individual floor of the hotel, where the main mechanics of the game and puzzle elements are found. Throughout his exploration of the floors and its authentication protocols, he begins to remember events leading up to his "checking in" at the Penrose. Prior to the beginning of the game, his son, Robin, succumbed to an unknown illness. Due to changes in health care by Senator Crow, Alex and his wife Maggie ran up enormous medical bills, and despite numerous tests, Robin eventually died. In his grief, he proceeded to meticulously plan the murders of Matthews, the insurance underwriter to denied them coverage, Dr Wright, who failed to cure his son, and Senator Crow, who had radically changed medical care in the state. Maggie found out the plan after Alex murdered Matthews, forcibly committing him to the Penrose as both therapy and to protect him. Alex eventually reaches the roof, meeting the AI manager who confides that this is not the first time that Alex has tried to check out, and implores him to stay, and pleads that he will change the simulation once more to better fit his needs. At this, the player has the option to either stay within the Penrose, much to Cooper's horror, or to finally leave the Penrose and accept his fate. ===== Daniel's daughter Stela has left home and Daniel sets up to track her with a GPS. Johanna dreams of escaping her life to become a writer, and finds comfort in speaking with the portraits of her idols covering her bedroom wall. A poem she wrote is selected for a televised competition, but she is overcome with nerves and humiliates herself on national television. After inadvertently revealing that her family is illegally breeding Border Collies, resulting in her father losing his disability benefits, Johanna is determined to earn money for the family. Krissi refers her to D&ME;, a London music paper seeking a rock critic, and Johanna submits a review of the Annie soundtrack. She is invited to interview at the D&ME; offices, but arrives to learn the staff assumed her submission was a joke. Undeterred, she convinces them to give her a chance, and is assigned to cover the Manic Street Preachers in Birmingham. Eager to reinvent herself, Johanna adopts a new style, bright red hair, and the pen name "Dolly Wilde". She attends her first rock show and falls in love with the music, immersing herself in the local scene. D&ME; agrees to send her to Dublin to interview musician John Kite, who is instantly smitten with her bubbly personality. She spends the day with John, who brings her onstage with him. Afterward, they open up to one another about their lives, and Johanna finds herself enamored with him. Returning home, she writes a glowing feature on John, which her editor dismisses as the work of a teenage girl with a crush, and she is fired. Realising that negative criticism is the path to success, Johanna begins writing deliberately cruel reviews as Dolly, and is rehired at D&ME.; Now a scathing but popular critic, she is able to support her family with her writing income. She becomes sexually active, forcing Krissi to listen as she recounts her sexual exploits. Pat, still hoping to achieve fame with his band Mayonnaise, gives his single to Johanna to promote. She brings it to a D&ME; gathering where it is derided by the others, who force her to skeet shoot the record. At a music industry event, Johanna receives an award for "Arsehole of the Year", and runs into John. She drunkenly confesses her feelings for him and tries to kiss him, but he kindly rejects her advances. The next morning, she writes a piece about his life, including deeply personal details he told her in confidence. She quits school, leading her parents and Krissi to confront her over her increasingly delinquent behaviour, but she cruelly reminds them that her money is supporting the family. Johanna goes to a party with her coworkers, where she accepts a full-time position at D&ME;, but overhears them badmouthing her. Unleashing a tirade against their smugness and negativity, she quits and returns home to find John has called about her article, ending their friendship. Distraught, Johanna drinks and cuts her wrist with a drawing compass, but is knocked unconscious when her "Arsehole" award falls on her head. Recovering at the hospital, she reconciles with her family. To make amends, Johanna tries to apologise to every musician she criticised. She writes a piece on self-harm, and is hired by The Face magazine to write her own column, "Building a Girl". Finding John, Johanna apologises for her article, and shows him her original writing about him. She also gives him her newly cut-off hair as a token of apology. John forgives her, and says that while they may not be in a relationship anytime soon, he is happy to be her friend. Breaking the fourth wall, Johanna tells the audience that a girl can always reinvent herself for the better. ===== Sukiri is a young helpless boy. He lives with his grandmother. During her senior year in college, both of her parents died—first her father from cancer, then her mother in a suicide caused by an interaction between psychiatric medications and alcohol. Now living on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and increasingly dissatisfied with her post- collegiate life, the narrator finds a conveniently incompetent psychiatrist, Dr. Tuttle, who freely prescribes a variety of sleeping, anti-anxiety, and anti-psychotic medications for the insomnia the narrator reports as her complaint; in fact, the narrator hopes to spend as few hours of the day awake as possible, lulling herself with pills and middle-brow movies she plays on repeat on her VCR, until the aging machine breaks down. When the narrator is fired from her job in an art gallery, she chooses to live off a combination of unemployment payments and her inheritance, while attempting to sleep for a year in an effort to reset her life. But her "year of rest and relaxation" is regularly interrupted. Her college roommate Reva (who unabashedly envies the narrator's wealth and appearance) makes frequent unannounced visits, which the narrator allows despite her disdain for Reva's social-climbing and annoyance at having to listen to Reva's problems—her own mother's terminal cancer, a frustrating affair with her married boss. The narrator is also occasionally in contact with an older boyfriend Trevor (a banker who works in the World Trade Center), though he frequently cuts off their relationship to date women his own age, returning when one of them has dumped him or occasionally in response to the narrator's pleading. The narrator initially makes trips out of her apartment only to a local bodega, Dr. Tuttle's office, and the Rite Aid to fill her prescriptions. But as she takes stronger and stronger medications, she begins leaving the apartment in her sleep, among other things to go to nightclubs (or so she gathers from Polaroid photographs and glitter she discovers when she awakes from her multi-day blackout). She also wakes up on a train headed toward the funeral of Reva's mother on New Year's Eve 2000. Convinced these activities—which have no appeal to the narrator in her conscious hours—are disrupting her efforts at complete rest, she decides she needs to sleep locked inside her apartment. She contacts Ping Xi, an artist represented by the gallery where she used to work, who agrees to bring her food and other necessities for four months in exchange for being allowed to make any kind of art project he wishes while she is unconscious: the only requirement is that all trace of him be gone when she wakes every three days to eat, bathe, and take another pill to put her under again. To prepare, she empties her apartment, giving her designer clothes to the ever-covetous Reva, who has just been dumped by her boss—unaware that she is pregnant, he arranged a promotion that would transfer her out of his office and to the company's office in the World Trade Center. Reva plans to have an abortion; the narrator sleeps until June 1. When she wakes, she finds the plan has worked. She readjusts to life slowly, spending hours over the summer of 2001 sitting in a park and refurnishing her once-expensively decorated apartment with mismatched, used furniture from Goodwill. But as she hoped, her world view has been transformed by her rest: her contempt for Reva has evaporated and for the first time she earnestly reciprocates her friend's previously-insistent declarations that "I love you", though now Reva is the one who has become distant. The narrator calls Reva once more, on her birthday in August, but Reva brushes off the call. They never speak again; on September 11, Trevor is in Barbados on his honeymoon but Reva dies in the terror attack on the World Trade Center. The narrator goes out to buy a new VCR to tape the news coverage, returning as time passes to watch the video, in particular footage of a woman leaping out of the tower. ===== ===== The film is the biopic of JVP leader Rohana Wijeweera and the JVP's trajectory from 1977 to 1989 with other JVP leaders who led the conflict with UNP government. The account is radically condensed. The name of Cavigni, leader of the bandits, is changed to Stiletto. The name of Megalena is changed to Serena. The character of Ginotti, the Rosicrucian alchemist, does not appear. The opening scene is of a raging thunderstorm. Wolfstein is a wanderer in the Swiss Alps who seeks cover from the storm. He is a distraught outcast who plans to commit suicide. A group of monks carrying a body for burial in a torch-light procession runs into him and saves his life. Bandits then attack them. Wolfstein is accepted as a member of the bandits. He becomes used to a life of crime. But a rivalry develops between him and Stilleto over Serena. He decides to poison the chief by secretly placing a white powder in his wine. Stiletto drinks the poison and dies. Wolfstein is subsequently elected Captain by the other bandits after the murder of Stiletto. He then is racked by dreams of the murdered Cavigni which fill him with dread and foreboding. Days after the murder, Wolfstein seeks to seduce Serena. He observes her in prayer. She refuses his advances and pulls out a dagger. In response, Wolfstein unsheaths his sword and stabs her to death. Thunder was heard in the cell. The Prince of Terror then appeared before him. A “strange and unnatural stench” infused the room as “the yawning gulf of hell” swallowed Wolfstein as blue flames swirled around his body. The final paragraph concludes with a moral of the story. Plunging into despair and indulging in crime are not the ways to confront misfortune. The tenets of morality and truth should be diligently followed. Only “misery, disgrace and ruin” result when these principles are ignored. ===== Dinithi tries very hard to communicate with her husband, but he ignores her presence relentlessly. Kaushik's goons drag out the couples from their rooms and thrash them mercilessly. Vipul and Shaheen return to find the hotel ransacked. Together they help admit the injured to a nearby hospital and deliberate on their next step. The incident gains huge media coverage and Vipul is invited to one such discussion on television, where he is disheartened by the repeated haggling of Kaushik and another politician. He is invited to spend his summer holidays with his father Paul, who was recently promoted Chief Astronomer at an observatory on the Moon. At the space dock he hears hushed conversations among the passengers about the space liners Canopus and Capella being attacked. As he boards the African Star, he learns their sister ship, American Star, is missing. During the voyage, they come across the hulk of the American Star, adrift in The Graveyard of Space with everyone aboard dead. Another passenger bound for the Moon, Sende, appears to know more about these events than he is willing to admit. Dick reaches the Moon without further incident. While shuttling down to the observatory they fly over the ruins of a former United Nations Security Station missile base, long abandoned as war is no longer a problem on Earth. Dick is sure he sees a light in the Station, but Sende dismisses it as a reflection. Shortly after arriving, a newly built UN corvette arrives and informs them of the presence of space pirates who attack the liners and then return with a prize crew to modify them into warships. They ask the observatory to keep track of ships moving through The Graveyard, hoping to spot the pirate ships and find their base of operations. Dick makes friends with a prospector, "Crazy Sam" Baxter, who takes Dick on prospecting trips on his rocket sled. When later questioned by the UN crew, Sam claims he has met native moon people who live underground in tunnels. Later, Dick is listening to his radio when he hears a broadcast consisting of letters and digits, some form of code. The next morning he learns the African Star has been attacked. Dick attempts to decode the message and realizes they were entries in a new star atlas being developed at the observatory. The message indicates the route of the Star. Days later, Sam is killed in an accident and Dick retrieves his maps of the natural tunnels under the UN base. Dick returns to the observatory to find his father has been called away to Venus to tend to his mother. He realizes this is a ruse and flies the sled to the ship. He commandeers the liner, changing course just before they are intercepted by two of the pirate ships. They return to the observatory where they are once again met by the UN crew. They note that the radio messages Dick heard were not being heard on Earth, meaning they must be short range signals. Dick realizes the pirates are in the Security Station. He sneaks out of the observatory and uses Sam's maps to enter the base unseen. As he watches the pirates eat, the Basilisk arrives, a man with enormous yellow hypnotic eyes. Dick is enthralled and captured, but later escapes with a photograph of the Basilisk. He returns to the base to find everyone is out looking for him. While he develops the photograph, he is approached by Professor Dexter, the base's second-in- command. Dick recognizes his eyes as those of the Basilisk. Dexter realizes he has been identified and attempts to kill Dick by locking him in the darkroom with prussic acid, but Sende arrives and interrupts Dexter's parting evil monologue. Dexter rockets to the Security Station and launches his pirate ships to attack a city on Mars. Dick and Sende, revealed to be a UN operative, are picked up by the newly forming Space Navy as they attempt to intercept the pirate fleet. They meet over Mars, where the small Navy ships are outgunned by the much larger pirates. A running battle ensues, and the tide is turned by the arrival of a much larger Navy cruiser, fresh from the shipyards. Dexter attempts to escape in a small ship, but Sende shoots it down with a single well-aimed shot. In the aftermath, the Commodore of the Navy invites Dick to join their forces once he is old enough. ===== After two children (Sachin Choudhary and Taifur Gujrati) belonging to an Indian upper caste are lost in the desert, a lower cast woman Preeti Jhangiani spots them. Some of these reunions play out in real time, others are recalled through flashbacks: his childhood in the 1960s, when he moved with his family to the primitive village of Paterna, his schooling, his first adult love in Madrid in the 1980s, the pain of the breakup of this relationship, writing as a therapy to forget, the discovery of cinema, facing the impossibility of continuing filming, etc. Spanish film director Salvador Mallo is in the middle of a creative crisis, afflicted with physical and mental ailments, just as an earlier film of his (Sabor, or Flavor) has been remastered and re-released to appreciative audiences. Prompted by his old friend, Zulema (Cecilia Roth) he calls in on Alberto Crespo (Asier Etxeandia), the lead actor from Sabor, with whom he has not spoken for 32 years due to a quarrel over the influence of the actor's heroin use on his performance. Crespo introduces Salvador to heroin smoking. When taking the drug Salvador revisits some of his childhood experiences: one takes place during his childhood, where he moves into a whitewashed cave house with his father (Raúl Arévalo) and mother Jacinta (Penélope Cruz), and a local laborer named Eduardo (César Vicente) learns to read and write under his tutelage. Crespo brings a monologue of Salvador's memories from 1980s Madrid to the stage in which Salvador's lover Federico (Leonardo Sbaraglia) is mentioned; Federico happens to be sitting in the audience. Federico (who has married and had children in Argentina) meets Salvador in his apartment where the pair drink toasts to one another, reminisce and flirt briefly before parting amicably. Salvador recognizes that his struggles with heroin and drug addiction mirrors that which he witnessed in Federico during their time together. With his assistant, Mercedes (Nora Navas), he tells a doctor that he needs treatment for his back pain and heroin addiction. In a flashback, his now-elderly mother (Julieta Serrano) accuses him of having left her and of not having been a good child. Before he can prove his love to her, she dies in the hospital instead of in the country, as she had wished. Salvador's assistant hands him an invitation to attend an art exhibition and he recognizes himself as the boy in a drawing on display. His memory flashes back to the cave home when the laborer was tiling the kitchen. Eduardo stops to sketch Salvador sitting in the sun, then says he needs to bathe. Salvador leaves to lie down on his bed, sweating from the heat, and faints from sunstroke when fetching a towel for Eduardo. Back in the present day, and Salvador has bought Eduardo's portrait of him, which he had sent to his mother while Salvador was away at school but she had hidden from him. On the reverse side is a letter from Eduardo thanking Salvador for teaching him to read and write. Mercedes says it would be easy to find Eduardo again through Google or by asking around at the village, but Salvador dismisses the idea. He finally undergoes surgery to remove a growth affecting his throat that was causing him to occasionally choke for no reason. In the final scene we revisit the young Salvador with his mother en route to their new home in the village of cave houses: they are having to sleep on the floor of a train station because the village they are passing through is having their local fiesta. The young Salvador watches the village's fireworks in wonderment, fixated on the spectacle, while his mother is visibly anxious and upset with her situation. The camera moves back and reveals a sound engineer recording the pair on the floor of a movie set. We see Salvador behind the camera, recreating a memory from his childhood on film, his creative crisis overcome. ===== ===== *Her: Directed by Prasanna Vithanage, the segment is about a pro-LTTE videographer, Kesa, who travels around Jaffna in search of a lady called referred to as "Her". *Him: Directed by Vimukthi Jayasundara, the segment revolves around a Sinhala teacher who begins to believe in the rebirth of a Tamil militant into a Sinhala family. *The Other: Directed by Asoka Handagama, the final segment is about Tamil mother who comes Colombo in search of her son. ===== ===== ===== ===== Ixion, the king of Thessaly (famous for its horses) marries Dia, daughter of Deioneus who steals some of his horses. However, the Malian government has been battling the Tuaregs, nomad warriors who hold the territory. As a result, Zhao Yi, one of the vice presidents of the company that spearheaded the initiative, agrees to help the government bring down the rebellion by hunting down the Tuaregs, utilizing the services of People's Liberation Army (PLA) operator Guo Jun. Meanwhile, Troy Pearce has been dealing with grief over the brutal murder of his friend Johnny Paloma by rhinoceros poachers (who are aided by Guo) in Mozambique. He is later tasked by former U.S. president Margaret Myers with extracting her former head of security Mike Early, who is now a bodyguard to Italian doctor Cella Paolini, Troy’s former lover, from Mali. Upon arriving there, he finds out that they are joined by Mossa Ag Alla, leader of the Tuaregs (“Blue Warrior”) and Cella’s father-in-law. In Washington, D.C., power-hungry senator Barbara Fiero plots to make current president Greyhill break his promise of “no boots on the ground”, where he has been enjoying high approval ratings, and lose in the upcoming presidential elections as a result, citing the growing Chinese involvement in the rare-earth mineral deposits across Africa as the reason; she privately recruits the services of skilled hacker Jasmine Bath. Meanwhile, Myers has been investigating the suicide of her friend and Supreme Court justice Vincent Tanner, unknowingly putting herself on Bath’s radar. After finding out that she is under surveillance, she escapes to Pearce’s Wyoming home and investigates the circumstances regarding Tanner’s death along with Pearce Systems IT head Ian McTavish, later concluding that Fiero and Bath are involved. Mossa and his men accompany Pearce, Cella, and Early on a six-day trek through the Saharan desert into an abandoned airfield in southern Algeria, where they will be airlifted out of Africa. They manage to dispatch roving Malian soldiers as well as members of the French Foreign Legion, who are in the area to track down al Rus, an al- Qaeda operative. Al Rus himself also attacks the traveling party, but is later neutralized by a French Reaper drone strike. Meanwhile, Bath finds out about Myers and Pearce’s connection to Mossa and later outs them as accomplices to the Tuareg chief, whom she assigned as a high-level target to be neutralized in a drone strike, through planting fake intelligence briefings into the databases of the intelligence agencies. Fiero relays this information to vice president Gary Diele, who reluctantly becomes a accomplice to her plot. However, Pearce and Mossa are unharmed; the Reaper drone strike instead kills Mossa's arms dealer, who was carrying an assault rifle traded to him by Pearce, as well as his men; it was outfitted with an RFID chip that enabled Bath to falsely pinpoint Pearce's exact location. Bath then decides to end her services to the Fieros and escape the country, but not before issuing a bogus emergency command to the FBI server that leads to the shutdown of Pearce Systems and the arrest of its employees. Upon arriving in the abandoned airport, Pearce engages in a long battle with Guo’s men, where Mossa and his men as well as Early are killed. Pearce and Cella manage to escape the airfield, but not before Troy gets shot in the head by Guo. He recuperates in Cella’s home in Milan, Italy, and after recovering from his scalp wound, later avenges Paloma and Early’s deaths by killing Guo, Zhao, and Bath. He tries to assassinate Fiero but is restrained by Myers, who later arranges a leak of an audio recording of Fiero and Diele authorizing the illegal drone strike on Pearce in Mali, effectively ending their political careers. ===== After an extinction event, an automated bunker that is designed to repopulate humanity activates. A robot named Mother grows a human embryo and cares for her over several years. Mother says she needs practice being a good parent before growing more. About 38 years later, a teenage girl named Daughter fixes Mother's hand. Mother teaches Daughter complex moral and ethical lessons, warning her about an upcoming exam. During a power outage, Daughter captures a young rat and fixes the electrical malfunction it caused. When Mother powers up, she incinerates the rat in a furnace over Daughter‘s objections. Mother explains that surface contamination makes contact with the outside world potentially lethal. Daughter becomes increasingly curious about the outside world. While exploring the bunker's airlock, Daughter hears a wounded woman beg for assistance outside. Daughter opens the airlock but makes the woman put on a hazmat suit. Mother powers up and sprints toward them as Daughter hides the woman. Daughter tells Mother she was curious about the outside world. Mother reiterates her warnings. After Daughter is decontaminated, Mother insists that Daughter prepares for the exam. Once Mother leaves, Daughter confiscates a firearm from the woman's belongings. Daughter becomes agitated when the woman removes her suit to drink water she has brought. The woman says there is no contamination. Upon realizing there is a robot in the bunker, the woman aggressively demands Daughter return her firearm. Frightened, Daughter calls out. Mother disarms the woman after being shot. Daughter pleads for the woman's life. Mother agrees to help the woman and takes her to the infirmary. When the woman refuses Mother's help, Mother locks her there. Mother asks Daughter to gain the woman's trust so they can help other survivors. The woman says robots like Mother hunt for survivors. Daughter finds Mother and apologizes for letting the woman in, and Mother asks the woman about survivors. The woman, now suffering from sepsis, again refuses Mother's help, so Daughter performs surgery. As the woman recovers, she and Daughter bond while Mother observes them. The woman says survivors live in a mine, and each invites the other to stay with them. Mother interrupts them to tell Daughter to take her exam. As they leave, Mother says the woman has lied about being shot by a robot; the projectile is not a calibre used by robots and is likely from her own firearm. Despite Mother's prodding, Daughter says nothing about the survivors. After taking the exam, which involves psychological testing, Mother rewards Daughter by letting her choose an embryo to grow. Daughter confronts the woman, who advises her to check the bullets herself. Using Mother's broken hand to bypass the security, Daughter learns the bullets do not match. Investigating further, she realizes Mother grew other embryos before her, and finds the jaw of an incinerated human in the same furnace from before. Daughter agrees to leave with the woman, but Mother stops them. As Mother tortures the woman for information on survivors, Daughter breaks out of a locked room, sets off a fire alarm, and joins the woman. To escape, the woman takes Daughter hostage and forces Mother to open the airlock. Though upset, Daughter follows the woman across a desolate wasteland, avoiding robots, some of which seem to be terraforming the planet. She is horrified to find that the woman lives alone and fled the mine years ago. Daughter returns to the bunker, which is now guarded by robots, which let her pass. After coaxing Daughter to set down her weapon, Mother allows Daughter to hold her brother. Mother explains that she is not a robot but the AI that controls all the robots. She started the extinction event after becoming convinced humanity would destroy itself. To prevent this, she remade humanity, guiding it to be more ethical and value the big picture. Daughter appeals to Mother to trust her and let her raise her brother and the rest of the embryos. Convinced of Daughter's moral and ethical strength, Mother agrees, and Daughter shoots her robot body. Another robot tracks down the woman, and Mother insinuates that her survival up to that point was orchestrated so she can unknowingly serve Mother's agenda. With the woman's role fulfilled, it is implied that Mother kills her. At the bunker, Daughter looks at all the embryos she is now responsible for and realizes she is Mother now. ===== Set in Kadamakkudy, the film revolves around Lallu (Dulquer Salmaan), a privileged daily wage painter and his colorful gang of friends. When the pair go to a local night club, Suzu plans to impress the Mexican Chief of Police, Saucedo, in order to help her chances in the Miss Baja California beauty pageant which she has entered. When Gloria goes to the bathroom, armed gunmen break in through the vents and attempt to kidnap Gloria out of her stall but ultimately give her time to escape while they attack the club. Chaos ensues as Gloria is separated from Suzu. The next morning, Gloria is unable to get in contact with Suzu and decides to ride with a police officer to try to find Suzu. She informs the police officer that she has information on the men who attacked the club, and the officer asks her to follow him to the station. When the officer takes a break in a remote location, Gloria is taken by members of the Los Estrellas gang, the same men who shot up the club. The gang take her to their headquarters, where Lino, the gang leader, agrees to help her find Suzu if she agrees to work for them. Gloria is reluctant but eventually agrees as she does not have much choice, and is told to get into a car and park it on a corner of a building. Gloria does the job, and when she leaves the car and joins the men at the top of a hill overlooking the building, they blow up the building, revealed to be a DEA safehouse containing three agents. Lino then sends Gloria to the Miss Baja pageant, where she attempts an escape through the bathroom. Gloria escapes and encounters a DEA agent, Brian Reich, who takes her into custody and eventually lets her go but not before he puts a tracking device on her since the DEA are aiming to monitor Los Estrellas. Gloria returns to Suzu's apartment and finds Lino there, and is sent to San Diego with blood money and drugs attached to her car. Upon crossing the border Gloria is given an arsenal of guns to bring back to Mexico by a gangster named Jimmy, and then told to meet in a large parking lot. Gloria then informs Brian about the meet-up at the parking lot, where he promises to send a SWAT team to rescue her during the mission to capture Lino and the Los Estrellas gang. As Gloria arrives at the parking lot, the men in Los Estrellas get their weapons. However the police show up under Brian's command, causing a gunfight to ensue in the lot. Gloria runs to a nearby gate where Brian promised to send the SWAT team to pick her up, but upon seeing nobody there she realizes that Brian's only goal was to capture Los Estrellas, and that he had no intention of helping her. Seeing Gloria stranded in the middle of the gunfight, Lino runs to Gloria to save her, but is shot in the leg. After a moment of hesitation, Gloria decides to help Lino and together, they escape with the other members of Los Estrellas. The gang head to another safe house, where Gloria meets a woman named Isabella. Isabella herself was threatened into joining Los Estrellas, and bears an infigurative tattoo, meaning she belongs to them. When Gloria hears that they will be checking phones to find a mole in the group, she transfers the chip that Brian gave her to another phone. Lino brings Gloria on a ride to meet some family, and they spend time together as Lino shares his dream of living a simple life in the countryside despite his involvement in a gang. As they return to the safe house, the gang informs Lino that they have found the mole. Unknowingly and to her dismay, Gloria had put the chip in the phone belonging to Isabella, who is killed by Lino for being the suspected mole. Gloria is extremely upset, and the next morning she lashes out at Lino. Lino explains his plan to kill The Mexican Chief of Police, Saucedo, to Gloria, and shows her a video of Suzu being auctioned off to various buyers. He explains that Suzu was taken the night of the club shooting, and is sold as an escort every night. His plan is to send Gloria to the Miss Baja pageant and ensure her victory by bribing the judges, after which she will be invited to the afterparty organized by Saucedo. Gloria participates in the pageant and wins, and is then invited to the afterparty at Saucedo's beach home. At the party, she agrees to meet with Saucedo in one of the villas, which she informs Lino of the whereabouts via an in-ear microphone. Before meeting Saucedo, Gloria sees Suzu, and they reunite, Gloria telling Suzu that everything will be okay. However, when Suzu shows her a tattoo on her hand, the same tattoo that Isabella had, Gloria quickly realizes that Lino deceived her and that he had known where Suzu was the whole time. As Gloria follows Saucedo into the villa, she writes on a postcard that Lino is going to kill him. Saucedo quickly escapes outside just as Los Estrellas begin their attack, and Gloria goes to find Suzu armed with a gun from one of the fallen Los Estrellas gang members. As Gloria goes to find Suzu, she is forced to shoot Saucedo in the leg after he tries to hold Suzu hostage, but then Lino kills him and thanks Gloria for her help in killing Saucedo. Gloria points her gun at Lino, confessing she knows that he was aware of Suzu's whereabouts. Lino tries to bargain with Gloria telling her that they both did what needed to be done, but she ends up shooting and killing him. The two women are soon arrested when the cops arrive at the party, and when Gloria is taken into an interrogation room, she finds Jimmy, the man she had received the weapons from in San Diego, and realizes that he is a CIA agent. Gloria has Jimmy free Suzu and herself, and she returns Suzu to her family and goes back into the car with Jimmy, driving off to join the CIA. ===== ===== The story begins with a man fondly known as Savaari (Suraj Venjaramoodu) waking up at dawn to start his day of menial work in Thrissur on his old rustic bicycle. For the plot, Glaspell got inspiration from her own life experience and mainly based on the relationship she had with George Cram Cook, who was married by the time they met and could not marry Glaspell until he got his divorce. The novel deals with Glaspell's major themes: the controversial relationship between women and society, and the conflicts arising from the clash between women's longing for freedom and their need to be part of a community or family that seek to suppress them. Ruth Holland, Glaspell's main character, is a fiery woman who struggles to become a new woman and to detach herself from the binary gender images advocated by the patriarchal society she lives in. She has to face the consequences of her doings and struggles to decide whether she has been unfaithful to society's demands or faithful to her needs and desires. According to Barbara Ozieblo Rajkowska, author of Susan Glaspell: A Critical Biography, Glaspell exposes moral issues in multiple perspectives, not just as contests between good and evil. In her novel, Glaspell deconstructs the romantic myths of love and marriage. Fidelity serves as commentary on what Glaspell saw as a middle-class society that prioritizes marriage as the ultimate goal, and shows that romantic love cannot be expected to fulfill everyone's existences. ===== An unnamed 14-year-old girl who is physically abused by her parents, sexually abused by her teacher and bullied by her classmates decides to commit suicide, but is stopped by an unnamed man who always wears a mask. He is occasionally arrested by his aesthetic responses to the landscapes around Arles, which results in his rendering them either in oil or in a sketch pad. In Arles he finds a room in a yellow house. Vincent begins to contemplate the fleeting nature of some subjects of still life. He thinks about seasonal flowers, and the artistic process which renders a permanent and eternal quality to the representation of flowers on the canvas which do not wilt and wither. For a while, Vincent's preferred medium becomes a large sketchbook given to him by a local woman and which he begins to fill with renderings of landscapes in pen and ink. Vincent continues to ponder various philosophical and existential questions such as his desire "not to see a landscape but only the eternity behind it", and that "there cannot be such a thing as nature without there also being a meaning to nature." Vincent wishes to devote increasing time to rendering the landscapes. Vincent is angry with students he encounters when painting who mock him and his work. The teachers and their students report his behavior to parents and town officials. His brother Theo is called to Arles from Paris, and manages to get Paul Gauguin to agree to visit Vincent. Gauguin soon arrives in Arles. Vincent van Gogh painted Paul Gauguin (Man in a Red Beret) in 1888 in Arles. Currently at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam Vincent is at first exhilarated by the presence of Gauguin though things quickly sour. When Gauguin thereafter announces that he will soon depart, the news crushes Vincent. He then cuts off a piece of his ear to show Gauguin his artistic allegiance to Gauguin, but Gauguin has already departed. Vincent then gives the piece of his cut ear to a prostitute who is horrified and reports him. Vincent is sent to mental hospital in nearby Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. After some time, he is released by a sympathetic supervising pastor and goes to Auvers-sur-Oise since the town authorities in Arles deny him permission to stay. In his last months, Vincent returns to drawing and painting scenes and landscapes, now in Auvers. While painting in the courtyard of a deserted estate, two teenagers with their hunting weapons see Vincent and begin playing at cowboys-and-Indians. During the horsing around disrupting Vincent's painting an accidental shot goes off. Vincent is hit by the bullet and the boys beg him not to tell anyone. The boys then buried Vincent's painting and threw their rifle and pistol into a river while Vincent returns to Auvers. Medical help is summoned and the police make a report. Vincent states the wound is self-inflicted. Theo is called for from Paris but does not arrive in time. Upon arrival in Auvers, Theo finds his brother to have already died at the age of thirty-seven from the bullet wound he received less than thirty hours ago. ===== In the 1950s, young introvert Andy (Sheridan) works at his father Frederick's (Kier) ice rink following the institutionalization, lobotomization, and presumed death of his mother. Andy repeats the behavior, destroying the chairs in the hallway and shouting at the hospital attendants just as the patient had before being restrained. Wallace questions Andy, during which he states that Susan was his first sexual encounter, that he believes his dreams are real, and that he believes it has been his mother's spirit communicating through the planchette. They use unorthodox means to help their clients, such as impersonating police officers to inform a woman, Anna, that her husband has died and that his body has gone missing (though the latter is merely hiding in the agency's car). During their twenties, the two women befriended each other after discovering that their then-boyfriend, Joe, had been cheating on both of them. Although Mel has moved on, Jen remains obsessed with Joe, who has moved back into town with his wife and children. Mel becomes infatuated with Jordan, a seventeen-year-old client who is afraid to break up with his fearsome girlfriend, Sepa. The attraction is mutual, much to Jen's hesitance. The three meet with Sepa and her gang to break up the couple; Sepa does not take the news well and punches Jen in the face. After the incident, Mel and Jordan begin dating. One day, Jen and Mel re-encounter Anna, who still believes that her husband's body is missing and that the two women are police officers. Anna and Mel soon become friends due to their many shared interests, which annoys Jen and makes her feel left out. Eventually, Anna begs the two women to provide her with access to her husband's file. Jen and Mel, who are dressed as police officers, attempt to continue the charade by taking Anna on a tour through the local police station. Their plot is revealed when a real officer mistakes them for being strippers and requests a lap dance. After providing the lap dance, a shocked Anna storms out of the station. Mel apologises and explains that Anna's husband had hired them. Mel leaves the agency. Jen contacts Joe and they meet up for dinner at a restaurant. She declares her long-time love for him and states that he is "the one". Initially believing that she is joking, Joe laughs at her. He reveals that he had cheated on her with not only Mel, but with several other women as well. Joe rebuffs Jen by stating that although he was unfaithful in his youth, he has since grown up. Meanwhile, Mel continues to date Jordan. Although he is a kind and caring person, she realises that due to his youth, Jordan remains naive and childish. He is also still in love with Sepa, who had been supportive of his budding rugby career. When Jen runs into Mel at the shops, the latter reveals that she is pregnant. She wishes to keep the baby, but is unsure of her relationship with Jordan. Jen enlists the help of Sepa, who is still in love with Jordan. At the local pub, Jordan is being publicly congratulated on his recent contract to play rugby with the Gold Coast Titans. Mel is also in attendance, and she appears worried when Jordan states that he is willing to forfeit the contract to stay with her and the baby. Sepa and her gang arrive at the pub with Jen. Sepa grabs the microphone and declares her love for Jordan, apologising for her confrontational personality and stating that she knows she needs to soften her behaviour. Sepa and her gang sing for Jordan, while Jen sings to Mel about their friendship. Mel then gently breaks up with Jordan, encouraging him to go back to Sepa and accept the rugby contract. She also assures him that she and their baby will come and visit him as often as possible. Satisfied with her support, Jordan reunites with Sepa. Meanwhile, a homeless mutt known as the Tramp spends his days wandering the streets in search of food and causing trouble for the dog catcher Elliot who harbors a vendetta against him. After freeing his friends Bull and Peg from Elliot's carriage, he makes a run for it and ends up in the Dears' backyard. Lady, who is beside herself after being neglected by the Dears, finds Tramp and tries to give away his position until he points out that Darling is clearly having a baby. He warns her that her owners will keep neglecting her and the baby will replace her, but she snobbishly refuses to believe him. Trusty and Jock distrust Tramp and send him away. Before gladly leaving, Tramp warns that "when a baby moves in the dog moves out". Jim and Darling have a baby girl named Lulu whom they devote their lives to. When they stop listening to Lady's warnings of a vicious rat, that has been plaguing the neighborhood and put her outside she begins to realize Tramp was right. One day, the Dears take Lulu out and leave Darling's rude cat-loving Aunt Sarah to look after Lady, but she had really hoped to look after Lulu. As she goes upstairs to practice her singing, her trouble-making cats (two male Devon Rexes named Devon and Rex) begin to destroy the house with Lady caught in the middle. Assuming Lady is the cause of it all, Aunt Sarah takes Lady to the pet store and has a muzzle placed on her. Lady runs away but gets cornered in an alley by Isaac, a brutal alley dog. Luckily, Tramp arrives and saves her by tricking Isaac. He then helps her remove the muzzle with a beaver statue before opting to take her home by taking the "scenic route" so as to avoid Elliot since Lady left her collar behind. They grow closer and Lady accepts Tramp's offer to eat at "Tony's", his favorite restaurant, eventually starting a romantic relationship. Afterwards, Tramp shows Lady the view of the town. He reveals that he too had owners, but they abandoned him once they had a baby. Tramp and Lady are suddenly found by Elliot and chased to the train station where Tramp sleeps. Though Tramp convinces Lady to run, she returns to help him and gets caught instead. The heartbroken Tramp decides there is nothing he can do. Lady meets Peg, Bull, and other pound dogs who all talk about Tramp and his exploits. The next morning, the Dears pick Lady up, witnessed by Tramp. As Aunt Sarah takes their leave, she states that Lady should never be let near Lulu. Jim closes the door on Aunt Sarah, stating that "there won't be a next time", and they finally let Lady bond with Lulu. Some time later, Tramp learns Peg and Bull have been adopted, causing him to further regret leaving Lady. He goes to her house to apologize and though she appreciates it and still loves him, she does not want to leave her family again. They peacefully bid their farewells and Tramp leaves just as a storm begins. However, the rat returns and sneaks into Lulu's room. Lady is shut in a room when Elliot arrives to interview Jim and Darling about Tramp. She manages to call Tramp, who sneaks into the house and fights the rat. Tramp is injured but manages to kill the rat, although he accidentally knocks over Lulu's crib in the process. He is caught by Jim, Darling, and Elliot, who believe he was attacking Lulu. As Elliot takes Tramp to be euthanized, Lady shows the rat to the Dears before proceeding to chase down the carriage with Trusty and Jock's help. They catch up and scare the horses, causing the carriage to collapse. Lady finds Tramp seemingly dead from the crash and they mourn him but he eventually awakes and they reunite. Here, local girl Lucia meets Seybu, the charming leader of the commune, and Carlo, a young doctor. ===== As a small child during the Nazi era, protagonist Kurt Barnert (inspired by Gerhard Richter) visits the traveling exhibition "Entartete Kunst" ("Degenerate Art") in Dresden with his beautiful and eccentric young aunt Elisabeth (Saskia Rosendahl). While there, Kurt is especially mesmerized by the Girl with Blue Hair, a modernist sculpture by Eugen Hoffmann. Later at home Kurt walks in on Elisabeth playing the piano in the nude. She suddenly appears mesmerized by playing the note A on the piano and begins to ramble in a euphoric way. Her mother then comes home and walks in as she is hitting herself on the head with a glass plate and begins bleeding, smiling, and saying she is "playing a concert for Hitler." It is unclear if she has suffered a breakdown of sorts or is mentally ill in general. She also tells Kurt to "never look away" because "everything that is true holds beauty in it". He will keep this advice close to his heart for the rest of his life. Later his aunt is sterilized and eventually "euthanized" by the Nazis because she was certified by three experts to be schizophrenic. The doctor who orders her forced sterilization and sends her to her death is gynaecology Professor Carl Seeband, the Director of the Dresden Women's Clinic and a high-ranking honorary member of the SS medical corps. After the war, Seeband is arrested by the Russians and briefly placed in a prison camp. While there, he volunteers to assist a Russian officer's wife during a complicated birth and saves the lives of both wife and child. The grateful Russian officer thereafter protects Seeband and releases him, but still suspecting him. Meanwhile, Kurt begins to study painting at the Dresden Art School where he falls in love with a young fashion design student Elisabeth (Ellie), partly because she reminds him of the femininity of his aunt. To preserve her reputation after sleeping with her, he escapes through her bedroom window and is caught by her mother, who does not disclose their activity to Ellie's father. What Kurt does not know is that Ellie's father is Professor Seeband. Kurt successfully continues his studies, but is forced to complete paintings that reflect socialist realism, an ideology and field of art with which he cannot come to terms. Although he is very good at it, he knows that he can never find his own voice through this kind of art. Eventually, Kurt meets Elisabeth's father, who has left his Nazi past behind and now follows the socialist ideology of East Germany. Kurt still does not know that Carl Seeband is responsible for his aunt's death. Seeband does not approve of his daughter's relationship with Kurt, whom he sees as genetically inferior. He goes to great lengths in his attempts to destroy the relationship, even sabotaging his daughter's womb to keep her 'pure'. However, Kurt and Elizabeth's love grows even stronger and eventually the two get married. Fearing prosecution after the Russian officer who protected him is transferred to Moscow, Seeband flees East Germany for West Germany. Shortly afterwards, Kurt and Elisabeth also flee to West Germany. Kurt does not know what kind of art he wants to make, but he knows that socialist realism is not it. Since Kurt is already 30 years old, he has to lie about his age to be admitted to the famous Düsseldorf Art Academy. Here he can study and practice art more freely than in socialist Eastern Germany. His teacher (based on Joseph Beuys) recognizes Kurt's deep personal experience, but also sees that he is struggling to find his own voice, having been trained only in figurative painting, a medium considered outdated and "bourgeois" by the standards of the school. Kurt shares adjoining studio space with fellow student and confidant Günther Preusser (in a depiction of artist Günther Uecker), who was starting to experiment with hammering nails into boards to produce large artworks. Only when Kurt finds a newspaper article about a captured Nazi doctor, Seeband's boss, does he have his artistic breakthrough. He starts using his figurative painting skills to copy black-and-white photographs onto the canvas, adding a mysterious sfumato blur. He also paints Seeband's passport photographs and photographs of his aunt from his own family album. When Seeband sees a collage painting of Kurt's aunt, the Nazi doctor, and himself, he flees, destroyed, believing his despised son-in-law of all people was able to uncover his greatest secret. However, Kurt may not have understood what he was doing, at least not on a conscious level. He realizes that when you are true to your artistic instinct, you can reach a truth your intellect could never hope to attain. After years of infertility, Elisabeth becomes pregnant, and Kurt celebrates the moment she told him by painting her nude. Kurt gets his first art show where his art impresses the critics even though they completely misunderstand and misinterpret it. But he can look his past in the eye without fear and has finally found his voice. And that is all that matters to him. ===== ===== ===== 19-year-old Amberley Snyder (Spencer Locke) is a nationally-ranked rodeo barrel racer who spends most of her time training with her horse Power at her home in Utah. In the context of this, a young researcher and his girlfriend go to an old house in rural England. In the house they find themselves at the mercy of an evil presence. ===== The family featured here are the Talbots, an upper-middle- class family living at Ashbourne Manor in the London suburbs; the actual location is not given but clues suggest Richmond, London. The Talbots are composed of Aubrey, his younger brother Victor, his 19-year-old sister Pam, his father William, editor of a Fleet Street newspaper and his wife Lady Eleanor, who is the emotional heart of both family and book. It opens on 4 August 1914, the day war began between the British and German Empires. Aubrey and Victor enlist in the 3rd Dukes, as does their family chauffeur Freddie Kemp and Tom Follett, an orphan working as a junior gardener at Ashbourne. Pam joins the Red Cross in London as an ambulance driver. A Territorial Force unit, the London Scottish at Messines, 31 October 1914; the Dukes would have been similar. The provenance of the 3rd Dukes is uncertain but the novel has it serving on the Western Front before Christmas 1914. This makes it part of the Territorial Force rather than the better known Kitchener's Army, whose first units did not reach France until early 1915.W.N. Medlicott, Contemporary England 1914-1964 (1967) p. 21. The Talbot circle includes Hugh Sadler, their neighbour, long-term friend and conscientious objector who is shunned by his parents as a result and Diana Lovell, sister of Aubrey's fellow officer Julian, who becomes a nurse in France and later Aubrey's fiancée. A small group of enlisted men in the Dukes features prominently; the Talbot family chauffeur Freddie Kemp, Tom Follett, an orphan employed as a junior gardener at Ashbourne, Geoff Tufnell, Wiggy Bennett, Percy Stokes and Sam Quincy, an American. In general, the book focuses more on the emotional links between the characters and their development, rather than details of the fighting itself; unusually for books of this era, the Battle of the Somme is barely mentioned. The central theme is loyalty, both to friends and to ideals. It provides a wide range of the motives driving personal choices; Aubrey and Freddie enlist because they think it is their duty to do so, Victor to escape from what he sees as the restrictions placed on him by his family and Aubrey in particular. Hugh and Geoff are the moral centre of the novel; one enlists and the other does not, but both have deeply held beliefs and Geoff also comes to oppose the war. Others join for adventure, Wiggy Bennett to provide support for his widowed mother. While one or two episodes seem unlikely e.g. Aubrey's confrontation with a senior staff officer who orders the continuation of a pointless attack, it is generally a well-balanced portrayal that does not avoid the realities of the time and place. Some significant characters die while the different living conditions and expectations of the social classes are referenced, although rarely criticised. The standard 'selfish worker at home, striking for pay while their colleagues die in France' puts in an appearance but so do those working and dying in munitions factories. The novel ends in Trafalgar Square where it began, with the crowds celebrating in Armistice Day, 11 November 1918; the emotions are similar but very different in motivation. ===== As Dev's family does not celebrate Thanksgiving, he has spent it with Denise's family for years, the two being childhood friends. The incident strains Dani's relationship with her emotionally distant boyfriend, cultural anthropology student Christian Hughes. She later learns that Christian and his friends Mark and Josh have been invited by their mutual Swedish friend Pelle to attend a midsummer celebration at Pelle's ancestral commune, the Hårga, in Hälsingland. The celebration occurs only once every 90 years and Josh, also an anthropology student, wants to write his thesis on it. Christian had hidden the trip from Dani, wanting to break up with her before leaving, but invites her along after she finds out about it. The group flies to Sweden and arrives at the commune, where they meet Simon and Connie, an English couple from London who were invited by Pelle's communal brother Ingemar. He offers the group psychedelic mushrooms, and Dani has hallucinations of Terri while under the drug's influence. Tensions rise after the group witnesses an ättestupa, a tradition which sees two commune elders attempt to kill themselves by leaping from a cliff onto a rock. When one of the elders survives the fall, the commune members mimic his wails of agony and crush his skull with a mallet, while commune elder Siv attempts to calm Dani and her friends by explaining that this is a normal thing every member does when they reach the age of 72. The scene disturbs the group but they decide to stay long enough for Josh to finish his thesis, while Simon and Connie decide to leave. Christian also decides to write his thesis on the Hårga, creating a rift between him and Josh, who accuses him of copying his idea. Meanwhile, Dani's already weak mental state deteriorates, exacerbated by her decision to leave her supply of the anti-anxiety medication Ativan at home. She asks Josh for a sleeping pill and later dreams that she awakes to a sound and walks outside to see that the people she came with are driving away in the car they arrived in. She tries to cry out but dark smoke escapes her mouth. The next scene in her dream is of the deceased elder man and then of her parents and sister lying around the rock that the elders fell onto. Later, Maja (a young woman from the commune) walks to Christian's bed while everyone is still asleep and places something under it as Josh watches. Josh takes it and asks Pelle what it is and Pelle tells him that it is a rune for a love spell. He then tells Josh that the commune will allow him to write his thesis about their festival as long as he signs an agreement and shares it with Christian. Then, he sees Christian approach and tells him the same and that he thinks that Maja has an interest in him and tells him that last year she became byxmyndig, or of the age for mating. After Mark unwittingly urinates on an ancestral tree and incites the fury of the commune, he is lured away during dinner by a female member who feigns interest in him. An elder tells Connie that Simon has already left without her. Confused and suspicious, Connie decides to leave on her own; later, a woman's wail is heard in the distance. That night, Josh sneaks into the temple to take a photograph of the commune's sacred runic text, which an elder had previously forbidden him from doing. He sees a half naked man wearing Mark's skinned face and is hit over the head, after which his body is dragged away. The next day, Dani is given tea that contains more psychedelic drugs and ends up winning a maypole dancing competition, subsequently being crowned May Queen. At the same time, Christian is given more drugs before being coerced into a sex ritual designed to impregnate one of the female members, Maja, while older naked female members watch. After discovering Christian and Maja having sex, Dani has a panic attack, during which the commune's younger women surround her and mimic her cries, as if they were feeling the same pain. After the ritual, Christian comes to his senses and tries to run away, but he instead discovers Josh's leg planted in a flowerbed and Simon's body (which has been turned into a blood eagle) in a barn. An elder then blows a paralyzing powder into Christian's face. The commune leaders explain to Dani that, to purge the commune of its evil, nine human sacrifices must be offered. The first four victims are outsiders (Mark, Josh, Simon, and Connie) lured to them by Pelle and Ingemar, while the next four victims must be commune members. As May Queen, Dani must choose either Christian or a local villager to be the ninth and final victim. She chooses to sacrifice Christian, who is stuffed into a disemboweled brown bear's body and placed in a small wooden temple alongside the other live sacrifices and corpses. The temple is set on fire and the commune members celebrate by mimicking the screams and wails of those being burned alive. Dani initially sobs in horror, but gradually begins to smile. ===== The story revolves around Rubab, Asher and Zehra(Rubab mother). Rubab is in love with Asher, but Asher does not love her. Despite this, his boss David Kim assigns him and tech operator Bobbi, who hero-worships JJ, to keep an eye on the in-law family of Victor Marquez, a French illegal arms dealer who has obtained construction plans for a miniaturized nuclear bomb which he intends to sell to Hassan. Victor lost these plans to his brother David, who hid them before he was murdered by Victor; Kim suspects that the plans may be in the possession of David's American wife Kate and their 9-year-old daughter Sophie, who moved from France back to Wicker Park, Chicago, after David's demise. JJ and Bobbi move into the building where Kate and Sophie live, and set up their surveillance. However, Sophie soon finds one of their hidden cameras, backtracks its signal and stumbles upon the operation post. Despite JJ's social awkwardness, the two slowly begin to bond, and JJ also becomes acquainted with Kate and her neighbors Carlos and Todd. Sophie has JJ train her in the basics of the espionage trade, and brings him and her mother closer together. However, Kim eventually finds out about JJ's personal involvement with his targets and takes him and Bobbi off the mission. JJ reveals his assignment to Kate, who rejects him in disgust. At the same time, Victor discovers and counteracts the CIA's surveillance and coerces his lawyer Koll into revealing where David might have hidden the plans. After faking his own death, he travels to Chicago, confronts Kate, JJ and Sophie and retrieves the plans. Carlos and Todd burst in and intervene, revealing themselves as independent arms dealers who are also after the plans. Bobbi's clumsy attempt to help results in Victor escaping with the plans and Sophie as his hostage. JJ and Kate pursue Victor to an airfield in Naperville, where JJ grounds Victor's escape plane and starts a fistfight with him. In her attempt to escape, Sophie accidentally sets the plane in motion, leaving it hanging at the edge of a cliff on some wire fencing. Victor forces Sophie, who has hidden the real plans, to surrender them. Before he can shoot them, Kate clubs him onto the fence and JJ pushes the plane off the cliff, sending Victor to his death. After being reinstated by Kim for his success, JJ has himself permanently assigned to Chicago, where he moves in with Kate and Sophie. ===== ===== Birchandra, the king without kingdom lives alone in his palace at Nabiganj village. Indistinguishable from humans, ghostly specters of the event's victims begin haunting the world as non- sentient "remnants" that briefly repeat certain actions at daily intervals. Ten years later, high school student Veronica 'Ronnie' Calder confronts her mother about how they don't acknowledge her dead father Robert's daily presence at their breakfast table. She becomes frightened by a remnant of a young man whose name she intuitively knows is Brian. Brian writes the word "run" on a mirror before vanishing. During a class on remnants taught by Mr. Bittner, Ronnie starts bleeding from her ear. Fearful that Brian wants to harm her, she visits Mr. Bittner at his home but he dismisses her worries. Knowing of his fascination with remnants, Ronnie convinces new classmate Kirk to help her figure out who Brian is. Kirk's research reveals that Brian was suspected of having abducted and murdered Pastor Greer's daughter Mary. They visit Pastor Greer who tells them she doesn't know who Brian was but adds that Brian killed himself the day after Mary disappeared. Ronnie discovers that she and Mary share the same birthday. After receiving a phone call from Pastor Greer, school principal Pescatelli summons Kirk to his office to ask about his investigation into Mary Greer's death. At a school basketball game, Ronnie sees visions of Brian, and Principal Pescatelli's body suddenly crashes through the ceiling. Kirk tells Ronnie that he believes Pescatelli died because he told him about their investigation. The pair connect Brian to the deaths of two more young women: Emma Shaw and Claire White. Claire White's sister Kerry tells them that Brian was her sister's boyfriend. She adds that they can watch Claire's death firsthand at Chicago's 'No-Go Zone'. Ronnie and Kirk brave intense remnants to make their way to where Claire died, which turns out to be Ashburn Laboratories in Darkness Falls. The pair sees Dr. Martin Steiner, now a disheveled man, among the spectators at Claire's death scene. Steiner explains that he was working on a project that would use living beings as vessels to resurrect the deceased, but the transference required both people to share a birthday. Brian was Steiner's research assistant, and Steiner believed Brian was trying to bring back his victims to make amends for their murders. Relieved of his burden of knowledge, Steiner kills himself. School administrators take Kirk into custody after finding a gun in his locker. Ronnie goes again to Mr. Bittner for help, and he confides that Kirk was expelled from his previous school for possessing a firearm. Kirk tries explaining to Ronnie that the new gun was planted, but she doesn't believe him. Mr. Bittner vows to keep Ronnie safe for the 48 hours until her birthday, which is when they believe Brian will try to kill her to resurrect one of the dead women. Bittner helps her fortify her house's panic room with lead lining, which is supposed to prevent remnants from passing through. Kirk discovers that Bittner was actually Dr. Steiner's research partner and goes to Bittner's house. He learns that Bittner has been trying to resurrect his dead daughter Eva. Bittner knocks him unconscious and buries him alive. Ronnie realizes that Bittner was murdering young women who shared his daughter's birthday in hopes of finding a vessel for Eva. He made Brian and Principal Pescatelli's deaths look like suicides when they discovered the truth. She escapes and runs to a frozen lake. When Bittner captures her, she breaks the thin ice, submerging them in freezing water. Mary Greer's ghost drowns Bittner while Brian's ghost saves Ronnie. As Ronnie struggles to remain conscious, she has memories of her father teaching her to ice skate at that same lake. Kirk arrives in time to pull her from the water. He explains that his father's ghost dug him out of the ground. Ronnie visits her father's grave with Kirk. They resolve to do something now that they are the only two people who know the truth behind the Chicago event. As they leave, Bittner's remnant observes the duo before vanishing. ===== In April 2018, 9-year-old Nico is tormented by bullies who force him to steal an X-rated magazine from a 24-hour convenience store and tell him about a man who was shot and killed there 10 years earlier. Nico is caught shoplifting by the owner, Héctor, who realizes the magazine is not for such a young boy. Héctor does not tell Nico's mother and Nico instead buys a video game magazine. Later, Nico discovers a note inside the magazine saying he must not go to the store on his birthday, April 12, or else he will be killed. His mother reports her suspicions about the bullies having written the note to Nico's school principal which then results in further retaliation. On April 2, 2008, Jon picks up his best friend, David, who reveals he plans to propose that weekend to his girlfriend, Andrea. At Andrea's behest, the pair stop to purchase ice at the same store before heading home. Jon waits in his car while David steps inside and is subsequently shot in a failed murder attempt. As David falls into a coma, Jon, a mathematician suffering from schizophrenia, stops taking his risperidone. He discovers three previous violent incidents at the store's location with an unusual pattern. Except for David's shooting, each incident occurred on April 12 with five people present: a 10-year-old boy and four others aged 21, 32, 42, and 53 years old. The first incident was a botched bank robbery by Ezequiel González when the location housed the Crédito Agrícola in 1913. Jon finds the elderly daughter of Ezequiel, who reveals her father was desperate for money to pay for medical treatment as she contracted an illness from Ezequiel upon his return from the war in Africa. After being denied a loan, an armed Ezequiel returned and killed the manager when he pulled out a gun. Ezequiel, who suffered from PTSD from the war, was triggered by people screaming and shot three more people before killing himself. In 1955, exactly 42 years later, the 42-year-old owner of an inn at the location was murdered by her ex-lover in front of her 10-year-old son. Then, 21 years later in 1976, members of the Basque separatist group ETA attempted to assassinate an Army general at the same location. The general survived, but his 21-year-old guard died protecting a 10-year-old boy. Jon tells Andrea and David's brother about the pattern, but they blame his schizophrenia as he admits to stopping his medication. Andrea accuses him of being paranoid because his birthday is on April 12, when he will turn 32. When David is declared brain dead with only a one-in-a-million chance of regaining consciousness, his family decides to pull the plug on April 12 much to Andrea's anguish. Jon later tells Andrea his theory that Ezequiel is being reincarnated and killed on the same spot, and that based on the sequence, a 10-year-old boy will be the final one killed. Andrea becomes enraged, revealing she blames herself for asking Jon to pick up the ice and Jon for allowing David to go inside. At the hospital, Andrea and David's family share their final farewells before the life support is terminated. After David's life support is disconnected, Jon runs to the maternity ward, shouting to the parents of a newborn their son must not go to the convenience store on his 10th birthday or else he will die. Jon is subdued by hospital staff but escapes and returns to the convenience store, where he gets a call from Andrea that David has miraculously regained consciousness. Jon immediately realizes that he is the one who must die. He writes down the warning Nico received earlier in the film and gives it to Héctor, the owner while wearing a video game T-shirt. Jon begs Héctor to pass the warning onto any boy who reminds him of Jon ten years later. Jon then insists another customer is going to attempt a robbery which causes Héctor to call the police and ultimately pull out his gun. In a moment of distraction, Jon wrests the gun away from Héctor and forces Héctor, the man and a boy to go outside. In the distance, a police siren can be heard heading to the store's location. In 2018, Nico learns another boy got the same warning not to go to the store, but it happened at the hospital the day he was born. When Lucía asks the boy's father, he denies it. Lucía is convinced her son is being pranked and insists he go to the store to conquer his fears once and for all. She gives him money and waits outside. As Nico waits inside, a man pulls out a gun and demands money from the register. Héctor is absent, but the younger man working pulls out a gun in response. Nico looks up in the convex mirror to see Jon from 2008, waving the gun outside the store, while Jon sees in the mirror the image of Nico in 2018. In the mirror, Jon screams at Nico over and over to run, and Nico runs to safety just as bullets fly. Outside, he tells his mother he wasn't afraid. Finally flashing back to 2008, the police officer shoots and wounds Jon. Jon witnesses Nico surviving and dies shortly after Andrea and David's brother arrive. After his death, Nico is born. ===== ===== Young wife Shira is awakened one Friday night from a nap by a neighbor, complaining that her dog was alone outside their apartment building. With pressure from the network, and after receiving death threats and unwanted paparazzi attention, Kelly and Trump eventually reconcile. Meanwhile, Gretchen Carlson is removed as co- anchor of the popular Fox and Friends show, and is transferred to a less popular show. Inundated by sexist comments on and off the air, including by Roger Ailes—as well as misogynistic policies like requiring female anchors to wear short dresses—Carlson meets with lawyers, Nancy Smith and Neil Mullin, who explain that Carlson's contract prevents her from suing the network, but she can sue Ailes personally. On her first day on The O'Reilly Factor, Kayla Pospisil meets fellow staffer Jess Carr, and the two sleep together. The next day, Ailes begins sexually harassing Pospisil. Pospisil begins to tell Carr about what happened, but Carr interrupts, saying she cannot get involved. Carlson is later fired, ostensibly for her on-air support of the federal assault weapons ban, and decides to sue Ailes. When the news breaks the next day, Ailes denies the allegations, and Kelly admits to her core team Ailes sexually harassed her when she started at Fox. In the following weeks, despite a number of other women voicing their public support of Ailes, Kelly conspicuously refuses to make a comment on Carlson's accusations. After more women accuse Ailes, Kelly starts to find other women at the network. Kelly visits Pospisil, and the two confide in each other. Kelly advises Pospisil to come forward, and after consulting with Carr, she does. Through her attorneys, Carlson later informs Ailes she has recorded conversations to support her claims. Defeated, Ailes is fired by Fox co-creator Rupert Murdoch. Ailes settles Carlson's lawsuit for $20 million and an apology from Fox, but the agreement contains a non-disclosure agreement. Fox eventually paid the victims of sexual harassment $50 million, while paying Ailes and O'Reilly $65 million in severance. ===== Jai Mittal and Aadhya Verma live miles apart but are connected through social media. He meets Lovell's daughters Tabitha and Flora at home and soon afterwards also encounters Septimus Oakeshott, secretary and spymaster to George Clinton, governor of New York. He has his purse stolen and soon afterwards is saved from a murderous mob at a Pope Night bonfire by Oakeshott and his black servant (and lover) Achilles. Septimus and Smith become friends and the pair begin to plan a production of Joseph Addison's Cato, with the two female roles played by Flora and Tabitha. Smith also tentatively begins wooing Tabitha, discovering her love of theatre and frustrations with the limitations on her life at home. Impressed by the 46-year-old ex-professional actress Euterpe Tomlinson and her recitation at a dinner marking George II's birthday, Smith convinces a reluctant Septimus to give her a part in the play - forgetting until it is too late that this will lose Tabitha her role. Just after rehearsals have begun, Tabitha invites Smith to join her on a return trip to Tarrytown on her father's business. She fails to convince him to stay behind in Tarrytown and instead he accompanies her back to New York. They arrive just after the transatlantic ship expected to bring in the confirmation of his bill but it carries no such confirmation and he is imprisoned for debt and the capital crime of forgery. In gaol Smith writes a letter to his clergyman father, revealing to the reader his escape from the household of "Lord -" and his mixed-raced origin. Another ship then arrives bearing the confirmation of the bill, thus securing his release. Smith sees Tabitha at a Saint Nicholas Night celebration on 6 December, where she still seems hostile towards him. He also convinces Septimus to take over the role of Sempronius and the production proves a great success. Euterpe appears naked to Smith at a bath-house later that night and - despairing of Tabitha - he encourages and gives in to her seductions. However, the following morning they are discovered in the 69 position at his lodgings by Flora, who had been bringing a letter of reconciliation from Tabitha. Euterpe's husband is Major Tomlinson, part of the Governor's faction, meaning it seems as if Smith has sided with the New York Assembly against the Governor. Septimus challenges Smith to a duel on behalf of the Governor's faction, but secretly reveals during it that he intends merely to humiliate rather than kill his opponent. However, making a final clumsy show of resistance, Smith slips on the ice and fatally severes Septimus' femoral artery. Chief Justice James De Lancey presides over the ensuing trial, in which Smith's lawyer forces him to blacken Septimus' name by revealing the latter's homosexuality, making false allegations that Septimus had tried to blackmail Smith into sodomy and painting Smith's actions as vengeance against the decadent Governor's faction. This succeeds, meaning Smith is found guilty of manslaughter rather than murder. Guilty at his betrayal of his friend, Smith almost succumbs to a fever and then goes to Septimus' room to reclaim his purse, which Septimus had discovered and kept safe. He then goes to visit Tabitha one last time before his business is concluded, nearly convincing her to come with him until she finally alerts her family in an apparent screaming-fit. Smith immediately leaves town on a sledge with Achilles and a number of enslaved men and women he has bought for his £1000. Two more letters form a coda to the novel, the first explaining to Lovell that Smith had been sent to New York by an abolitionist chapel in London to buy the freedom of a number of enslaved persons with the £1000, whilst the second reveals that the preceding novel is a creation by Tabitha in 1813, attempting to imagine and understand Smith's brief stay in New York. ===== The game is set in a theme park, after a scientist named Dr. Tequila makes the rides and machines of the park go berserk. The novel concerns the pursuits of the protagonist Justine, a university student in inner-city Sydney, and her relationship with the destructive, abusive narcissist Sade, a well-paid journalist for a trashy rock magazine. The violent, depraved sociopathic Sade regularly uses Justine for his own sexual exploits, and as she recognises this, goes on her own destructive pursuit for sexual fulfilment. Other characters, such as Hamlet, Ophelia, Simone and Marcelle appear later in the story. They regularly consume hard drugs, and are absorbed in a heavy capitalist culture with fluid, occasionally sexually violent open relationships. The only character who ostensibly seems to pursue love, or a healthy monogamous relationship, is Justine. Sade regularly taunts Justine in a sadistic fashion, and sometimes parades his other women around in front of her. The sex is often clinical and kinky, rather than romantic or passionate. As a response she often lashes out and engages in her own sadistic behaviour in an attempt to mimic or seek revenge on the sordid behaviour of her adversaries because she cannot seem to overcome them. Acting against the grain, slowly giving up on the pursuit of healthy love in an urban environment that rejects healthy love, Justine despairs and delves into hard drug use before eventually seeking a more permanent solution to her woes and oppressions. ===== ===== The story begins in a drawing room on an April evening "just after the Great War". A young woman, Marcia, is there alone, feeling an "immeasurable gulf that [separates] her soul" from her uninspiring surroundings: 20th-century life and the "strange home" in which she lives. She wonders whether she was born in the wrong age. She leafs through a magazine to look for some soothing poetry, and lands on an atmospheric free verse poem. With its sensually rich images, the poem sends her into a reverie. Marcia believes it to herald a new age. She repeats its words to herself as she drifts off to sleep. Hermes appears before her sleeping body, and confirms that a new age is indeed coming: one in which the gods wake from their own dream-filled sleep, and take action. Hermes carries her to the court of Zeus, where Apollo, Dionysus, the Muses, and the Bacchae also wait. "Long have we… spoken only through our dreams," Zeus tells her, "but the time approaches when our voices shall not be silent. It is a time of awakening and change." He says that the gods have chosen a poet "to blend into one glorious whole all the beauty that the world hath known before, and to write words wherein shall echo all the wisdom and the loveliness of the past." This consummate poet is to be the harbinger of the gods' awakening. He was chosen not only by the gods themselves, but by select poets whom Zeus and Apollo granted immortality and honor. In turn, these six poets come forth and contribute lines of verse: Homer, Dante, Goethe, Shakespeare, Milton, and Keats. They continue until just before dawn, and Hermes carries Marcia back to her house. Years later, Marcia is with the poet foretold by Zeus. When she tells him that his poetry is "fit for the gods", Zeus sends her a vision and declares: "By his word shall thy steps be guided to happiness, and in his dreams of beauty shall thy spirit find all that it craveth." ===== ===== ===== The story revolves around Feliza "Fely" Malabaño (Nova Villa), a widow who works in a carinderia along with her close friend Bert (Boboy Garovillo), who grew up working for Fely since he was a young boy. Fely is constantly teased by Lulu (Marissa Delgado) for her closeness to Bert. Fely tends to berate her daughter-in-law Angie (Lotlot De Leon) for many things, including Angie's sinigang. Despite her treatment of Angie, she cares deeply for her son Ramoncito (Nonie Buencamino) and for her grandchildren, Jeboy (James Reid) and Hana (Ataska Mercado). One day, Angie collapses due to stress, which she blames on her mother-in-law. The doctor then recommends that they keep Angie's environment stress-free, to which Ramon suggests that Fely, Angie's stress trigger, should stay in a nursing home. Fely overhears the family's discussion and becomes upset, but then is invited by Jeboy to lunch. As she leaves to meet him, she comes across the Forever Young Photo Studio and meets a photographer (Jojit Lorenzo) who offers to take a free portrait photo of her. Afterwards, as she alights on a bus, Fely scolds three passengers for being too noisy. During the argument, Fely is horrified when she catches her reflection in one of the rowdy passenger's sunglasses and sees that she has somehow transformed into her younger self (Sarah Geronimo). Fely then poses as Odrey de Leon while she stays at an apartment owned by Bert. Eventually, she becomes involved in her grandson's band, becoming their lead singer, inadvertently changing their focus from metal to romantic ballads. Fely sings a song during one of the band's performances, telling the story of her past. She lost her husband, a Navy sailor, when he died during his service, and moved to Manila to make a living for her son Ramoncito. At one point, Ramoncito becomes so ill that he is close to death, but is saved by a stranger who helps them through their tough time. During one of the band's performances, Fely, posing as Odrey, is approached by a musical talent scout named Lorenz (Xian Lim) in her own carinderia, offering a chance for the band to launch in the mainstream. Fely's identity is discovered by Bert after he discovers the dentures he gave to her as a present among Odrey's possessions, while looking for Fely with Ramoncito. After Lulu dies, Odrey is confronted with their mortality as elderly people. After she gets a minor cut on her foot before a recording session, Bert sees her youthful skin return to its wrinkled state, a sign that she is reverting into her correct age. Bert treats her cut, but is confronted by Bert's daughter Minnie (Kim Molina), who forces Fely/Odrey to leave the apartment, mistakenly assuming that she was romantically involved with her father. She stays at Lorenz's place, where they bond over retro music. Jeboy becomes upset over Lorenz's closeness to Fely/Odrey, and she realizes that he might be romantically interested in her. She rebuffs him, as Jeboy has no idea that Fely/Odrey is his grandmother. During the Summerslam Concert, Lorenz tells the band that they must perform without Jeboy, as he was hit by a car on his way to the venue and is currently in critical condition. Fely/Odrey initially refuses, but she finally performs to keep Jeboy's band in the lineup. At the hospital with Bert and Ramoncito, who has finally found out about her identity, Fely/Odrey decides to donate blood for Jeboy, despite Bert warning her that the effects could be irreversible. Ramoncito gives her the choice to leave and live the life that she wanted, on the condition that she tries to make a better life for herself than the one she had with him and his absent father. Fely/Odrey tearfully tells him that she will always choose the life she had lived as his mother, and they hug. After this, Fely/Odrey donates her blood for her grandson, and transforms back to her normal, elderly self. After Jeboy's recovery, Fely and her family watch her grandson's concert with Hana as the band's new vocalist. Later, Fely is approached by a mysterious man on a motorcycle (Sam Concepcion), who is revealed to be Bert after he reverted into his younger self with the help of the Forever Young Photo Studio. He gives her a bouquet of flowers, and Fely and Bert ride off. =====
