While driving through rural Louisiana late at night, she hears news reports of blackouts in several major cities before her car is sideswiped by a truck trying to overtake her, causing a crash that leaves her unconscious. She wakes in a locked room, an apparent leg brace chained to a pipe, with bedding and her packed bag lying nearby. A man enters the room and introduces himself as Howard, explaining that they are in a bunker beneath his own farmhouse about forty miles outside of Lake Charles. He claims he found her in the ditch and saved her life and also that the air outside is radiated by a nuclear or chemical fallout from an apparently very recent "attack." He later takes her on a tour of the well-stocked bunker, where she meets Emmett, another survivor. Howard, noticing Michelle's suspicion, shows her the viewport of the bunker's entrance, where she sees two dead and decayed pigs outside, evidence of the fallout. Michelle also sees Howard's truck and recognizes it as the truck that drove her off the road. She privately relays her concerns about Howard's motivations to Emmett, who dismisses them and claims to have seen the attack with his own eyes. He was not abducted as she was but rather sought Howard's refuge voluntarily. During their first dinner together, Michelle stokes Howard's jealousy to incite rage, during which she steals his keys and runs to the hatch in an attempt to escape. As she goes to open the door, however, a woman with facial lesions exits a car and beats the window, begging to be let inside. Michelle does not open the door, returning to the bunker and leaving the woman to her fate. Howard opens up about his daughter, whom he describes as being "not with us anymore." He enlists Michelle to fix the air- filtration unit when it fails since she is small enough to fit through the vents; while repairing it, she finds a locked skylight with the word "HELP" scratched on the inside of the glass. Michelle and Emmett discover that Howard's purported daughter was a young girl who had gone missing about two years earlier, and they suspect he abducted her. They make plans to escape, creating a makeshift hazmat suit in secret. When Howard discovers that tools and parts are missing, he accuses the two of stealing them, threatening to immerse them in a barrel of perchloric acid. Emmett takes responsibility, claiming that he was building a weapon so that Michelle would respect him. Howard pulls his gun and kills Emmett. He tries to comfort Michelle, telling her that he killed Emmett to protect her. In shock, Michelle makes final preparations to leave when she is surprised by Howard. She manages to flee from him with the suit. En route, she knocks over the acid barrel, which starts an electrical fire in the bunker and inflicts serious chemical burns to Howard’s body. Michelle manages to escape just in time before the perchloric acid explodes, destroying the bunker and killing Howard. Michelle dons the suit and escapes the burning bunker, fleeing onto Howard's homestead. Seeing signs of living wildlife, she takes off the suit's helmet; but then she suddenly sees a giant biomechanical alien spacecraft, drawn by the bunker explosion. A quadrupedal creature drops from the craft and chases Michelle, forcing her to hide in a shed. She then races towards the farmhouse, but the craft appears and emits a green gas that forces Michelle back into the suit. Her delay allows mechanical appendages from the ship to capture her, but she is able to craft a Molotov cocktail from a bottle of whisky to throw into the ship. The fireball destroys the ship, causing it to crash and forcing the appendage to release her. After recovering, she is able to take the dead woman's car and escape. As she nears the Texas border, she hears radio chatter instructing any survivors to head to Baton Rouge to evacuate, but also requesting the help of anyone with medical or combat training in Houston. At a crossroads, she pauses a moment before driving off towards Houston. In the distance, two larger alien craft can be seen in the sky. ===== Taking place in the early Ming dynasty, the story begins by following a merchant named Jiang Xingge, who had married a respectable wife, Wang Sanqiao. While he is departing, Sanqiao gives him a pearl-sewn shirt, which is an important family heirloom of the Jiang family. In his travels south, he meets Jiang Xingge. Chen confesses about his love affair but is ignorant to the fact that he is speaking to Sanqiao's husband. Chen shows Xingge the pearl shirt, and Xingge knows. Xingge then returns home, and sends his wife away with an order for a divorce. He also calls for thugs to smash up Madam Xue's home for her part of the misdeeds. The story then changes perspective, to follow Chen Dalang's wife, Pingshi. The story continues as Pingshi and Chen argue over the pearl shirt, which Pingshi then hides, to spite him. Chen decides to go on a trip, but comes up ill. Pingshi leaves their home to find her husband, in order to take care of his illness, but instead, she finds that Chen has already died. She is advised by others to marry another man in order to pay for Chen's funeral and to take care of herself. The marriage is arranged to Xingge. The couple get along well, and when Jiang Xingge sees the pearl shirt that Pingshi kept, he believes that their pairing is divine intervention. In the fourth, and final act, Xingge departs on a trip for business again, though this time, he gets into an argument in a market. Through a series of circumstances, this leads to the death of an old man, and Xingge is found to have charges pressed against him. The judge of the case is the new husband of his ex-wife, Sanqiao, and she begs her second husband to preserve Xingge's life. Xingge is spared, and when Sanqiao's husband is told the entire tale, the judge begins to cry and sees that Sanqiao and Xingge still care deeply for one another. He allows Sanqiao to leave him, and become Xingge's second wife. Rather than bicker or fight with one another, Pingshi and Sanqiao get along well, and the story draws to a close. ===== An insomniac fox is having trouble sleeping, and despite his best efforts (tossing and turning, clamping his eyes shut, etc), he simply cannot fall asleep. On accident, he stumbles across a book entitled "INSOMNIA AND ITS CURE", which tells him filling his pillow with duck feathers is essential for a good night's sleep. Upon the next morning, the fox heads out to capture himself a duck and soon comes across one. The duck, however, proves to be too much for the fox to handle, as he's constantly outsmarted and all his plans to capture him backfire at every turn. Frustrated, the fox tries one last ditch effort to capture the duck, who's flying just out of his reach. Using many boards and nails, he creates himself a crude wooden bridge to reach him, though the duck outsmarts him yet again by almost-completely sawing off the part of the tree the boards were attached to, leaving it on the verge of collapsing should even the slightest bit of movement be had... and as luck would have it, the bridge is balanced dangerously over a rather large ravine. Though he's frightened, the fox still persists on capturing the duck, who then lets loose one of his feathers onto the wooden bridge... which the extra weight proves to be just enough to cause it to collapse, along with the fox, who falls to his death. Satisfied, the duck starts to fly away, but he's stopped by the angel spirit of the now-dead fox. Panicked that the fox now has the ability to fly with his newly-gained angel wings, the duck quickly takes off into the distance with the fox following closely behind. ===== The novel is set in the late 1970s Stockholm. Greg is impressed by his fearlessness, although Tommy exhibits unusual habits and mannerisms; for instance, Tommy can afford apartments in both San Francisco and Los Angeles, but he will not discuss his personal life or the source of his wealth, and he insists he is from New Orleans despite having a European accent. Greg begins dating Amber, whom he meets at her job at a nightclub, and Tommy grows jealous, believing that their relationship is sabotaging his with Greg; as he continuously fails to find work, he becomes disheartened. As Greg's auditions also dry up, he shares his frustrations with Tommy, who decides to make a film for them to star in. Tommy writes the screenplay for The Room, a melodrama about a love triangle between banker Johnny (played by Tommy), his fiancée Lisa, and his best friend Mark. Greg reluctantly accepts the role of Mark and a line producer credit. They rent out the Burns & Sawyer production house; Tommy insists on buying all the production equipment and shooting the film on 35mm film and HD Digital simultaneously, costly and unnecessary measures. The employees introduce Tommy to Raphael Smadja and Sandy Schklair, who work as his cinematographer and script supervisor, respectively. Actress Juliette Danielle is cast as Lisa. Production starts smoothly, but Tommy is difficult to work with. He forgets his lines, arrives late, and refuses to supply his crew with basic needs such as drinking water and air conditioning. With no one receiving a full script, the cast and crew are baffled by the film's nonsensical plot and Tommy's inexplicable directorial and acting choices. During preparation for a sex scene, Tommy refuses to film on a closed set and humiliates Juliette by pointing out the acne on her shoulder to the entire crew. Having filmed extensive behind-the-scenes footage, Tommy reveals that he knows everybody hates him and believes that nobody, including Greg, supports his vision. Greg and Amber run into Malcolm in the Middle star Bryan Cranston, who invites Greg to fill in for a small part in a Malcolm episode. The part requires a beard; as Greg is due to shave his beard for The Room, he begs Tommy to postpone shooting, but Tommy refuses. On the last day of shooting, Greg accuses Tommy of selfishness and duplicity throughout their friendship and questions his real age and origins. The two fight before Greg storms off. Eight months pass; by June 2003, Amber and Greg have split up and Greg is working in theatre. Tommy invites Greg to the premiere of The Room; to Greg's surprise, the entire cast and crew attend. The audience reacts with laughter, as Tommy's poor performance, script, and filmmaking techniques become immediately apparent. A devastated Tommy storms out, but Greg comforts him, telling him that they have delighted the audience. With renewed optimism, Tommy returns to the theater as The Room ends and takes credit for his "comedic" film. Inviting Greg onstage to thank him, the pair receive a standing ovation. In a post-credits scene, Tommy meets Henry, a partygoer (played by the actual Tommy Wiseau) who offers to hang out. Tommy refuses, oblivious to the similarities in their accents and mannerisms. ===== Rajeev (Jagapati Babu) is the owner of Raksha Construction Company. He demands that their neighbor should give his son the brighter side of the story. ;Part IV The narrator imagines a happy end. After several days, her body is dredged out of the town lake. Lydia's parents, James and Marilyn, are horrified by their daughter's death. As the police investigate, her parents discover that, contrary to their belief that Lydia was popular and doing well in school, she was actually a loner with almost no friends and that her grades had severely slipped. The death of their child leads James and Marilyn to reflect on their lives. James, the academically gifted child of Chinese immigrants, spent his life yearning to belong. He met Marilyn in 1957 when he was a doctoral candidate at Harvard teaching a class on American culture in which she was a student. After graduation, James failed to secure a faculty position at Harvard, so accepted an offer from the fictional Middlewood College in Ohio. Marilyn grew up disgusted by her homemaker mother (who taught home economics in her high school) and longed to become a doctor. When she met James and recognized the racist treatment he had been enduring, Marilyn felt a kinship with him and the two began a relationship. Discovering she was pregnant, she arranged for a quick marriage to James and was angry when her mother tried to stop the wedding after seeing that James was of Asian descent. Marilyn intends to resume her studies to become a doctor after her son, Nathan, was born, but after her second pregnancy, with Lydia, she remained a homemaker for eight years. Upon receiving news of her estranged mother's death, Marilyn returns to her childhood home in Virginia to deal with her mother's possessions. While doing so, she realizes that she became a homemaker, as her mother had always desired. Marilyn then abandons her family to pursue her academic studies. James believes that she has left because he and the children are Asian, and that she no longer wants to deal with the societal pressure of being outsiders. Marilyn's absence lasts nine weeks, during which she discovers that she is pregnant with a third child, Hannah. She returns home and realizes that she will never have the will to abandon her children and pursue a career again. Instead, she encourages Lydia to become a doctor, aggressively training her in math and science. During Marilyn's absence, James began favoring Lydia and bullying Nath, whom James perceives to be as friendless as James was in childhood. Due to this, Nath becomes jealous of Lydia and one day pushes her into the lake even though she cannot swim. However, the ease with which she falls causes Nath to realize that Lydia is drowning under the weight of her parents' expectations. He rescues her and the two become close. By the time they are teenagers, Lydia begins buckling under the weight of her mother's expectations and cannot keep up with the advanced courses her mother encourages her to take. She also is tired of pretending that she has friends in order to assuage her father. She begins to hang out with Jack, a next door neighbor whom Nath hates, and who has a reputation for deflowering town girls. Meanwhile, Nath, who has spent the past few years being ignored by his parents, is accepted to Harvard. Lydia is scared of being abandoned by Nath and hides his acceptance letter. When she is caught, a rift develops between them. Lydia goes to Jack, hoping to have sex with him, but Jack confesses that he is in love with Nath, and that his reputation as a Lothario is a pretense. Returning home, Lydia is determined to reveal her shortcomings to her father and mother. Tracing her unhappiness to the time her brother pushed her into the lake, Lydia goes there late at night intending to jump into the water and swim back to shore. However, Lydia drowns instead; it is revealed that her death was not a suicide as suggested previously. In the present, Marilyn discovers that after Lydia's death, James has begun an affair with one of his graduate students, Louisa Chen, who is also of Chinese descent. Marilyn learns that he believes that she resents their marriage because he and the children are not white. James leaves Marilyn. James and Marilyn slowly begin to reconnect when he returns. Nath, who still believes that Jack is responsible for Lydia's death, confronts him by the lake, punching him twice before Hannah, who has realized that Jack is in love with Nath, stops him. Nath falls into the lake, where he realizes that he will never understand Lydia's death and achieves a modicum of closure. He is pulled out of the lake by Jack. It is implied that he may return those feelings later in life. ===== Niharika is a young journalist working in a Telugu News Channel. After the labor camp is dismantled, Ruslan's handler chases the dog away, unable to shoot him. Many other guard dogs of the camp had the same luck. Over time most of them somehow found their ways in "civil" life, but Ruslan cannot forget his duty; he perceives the empty camp as one huge prisoners' escape and prefers to starve than to take food from stranger's hands. After some time Ruslan accidentally meets his master chatting with a former Gulag inmate nicknamed Potyorty (Потёртый, "Shabby"), but the master chases him away again, and Ruslan unexpectedly associates himself with Potyorty. The latter thinks he tamed the formerly vicious dog, but Ruslan sees Potyorty as a runaway inmate who returned voluntarily (he saw this happen many times) and decides to guard him until the "normal order of things" is restored. Initially all dogs used to come to the railway station, waiting in vain for a train with a fresh party of inmates. Eventually all but Ruslan cease doing so. At last a train arrives, bringing a party of enthusiastic workers for a "great construction site of communism" to be launched at the site of the camp. Workers form a column and march forward with songs. Thinking that these are prisoners, the former guard dogs come out and take their usual posts around the column. The newcomers are puzzled, but the locals know what's going on and watch with morose expectation. A couple of workers step out of line and, perceiving this as an escape attempt, the dogs attack them. This causes the rest of the workers to panic, which causes more dogs to attack and soon the town is in chaos. The townspeople and workers fight the dogs and eventually kill all of them. Ruslan is mortally wounded, but manages to crawl back to the railway station, where he remembers his littermates being killed shortly after their birth and wonders if they were luckier than he, before finally dying himself. ===== In 1998, Adonis "Donnie" Johnson, the son of an extramarital lover of former heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, is serving time in a Los Angeles youth detention center when Creed's widow, Mary Anne, visits and offers to take him in. In 2015, Donnie is in Tijuana, preparing for his fight in an amateur boxing bout hosted in a bar. Upon returning from his latest fight, Donnie resigns from the Smith Boardley Financial Group to pursue his dream of becoming a professional boxer. Mary Anne vehemently opposes his aspiration, remembering how her husband was killed in the ring by Ivan Drago thirty years ago. Donnie auditions at Los Angeles' elite Delphi Boxing Academy, managed by family friend Tony "Little Duke" Evers Jr., the son of Apollo's trainer Tony "Duke" Evers, but is turned down. This rejection is further emphasized as Donnie is beaten in a sparring match by light heavyweight division first contender Danny "The Stuntman" Wheeler after he publicly challenges the whole gym to prove himself by betting to give away his 1965 Ford Mustang. Undaunted, Donnie travels to Philadelphia in hopes of getting in touch with his father's old friend and rival, former heavyweight champion, Rocky Balboa. Donnie meets Rocky at Rocky's Italian restaurant, Adrian's, named in honor of his deceased wife, and asks Rocky to become his trainer. Rocky is reluctant to return to boxing, having already made a one-off comeback at a very advanced age despite having suffered brain trauma during his career as a fighter. However, he eventually agrees. Donnie asks him about the "secret third fight" between him and Apollo just after Apollo helped Rocky regain the heavyweight title, and Rocky reveals that Apollo won. Donnie trains at the Front Street Gym, with several of Rocky's longtime friends as cornermen. He also finds a love interest in Bianca, an up-and-coming singer and songwriter. Donnie, fighting under the surname Johnson and the fight name "Hollywood", defeats local fighter Leo "The Lion" Sporino, which upsets the opposing corner. This leads to the opposing side leaking the news that Donnie is Creed's illegitimate son. Rocky receives a call from the handlers of world light heavyweight champion "Pretty" Ricky Conlan, who is being forced into retirement by an impending prison term. He offers to make Donnie his final challenger—provided that he legally change his surname to Creed. Donnie balks at first, wanting to forge his own legacy. However, he eventually agrees. While helping Donnie train, Rocky is diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He is unwilling to undergo chemotherapy, remembering that it was not enough to save Adrian when she had ovarian cancer. His diagnosis and the fact that his best friend and brother- in-law Paulie Pennino—Adrian's brother—has now died in addition to Adrian, Apollo, and his old trainer, Mickey Goldmill, further force him to confront his own mortality. Seeing Rocky shaken, Donnie urges him to seek treatment. Donnie fights Conlan at Goodison Park in Conlan's hometown of Liverpool, and many parallels emerge between the bout that ensues and Apollo and Rocky's first fight forty years earlier. First, before entering the ring, Donnie receives a present from Mary Anne — new American flag trunks similar to the ones Apollo and later Rocky wore. Additionally, to the surprise of nearly everyone, Donnie gives Conlan all he can handle. Conlan knocks Donnie down, but Donnie recovers to knock Conlan down for the first time in his career. Donnie goes the distance, but Conlan wins on a split decision (just as Apollo retained his title by split decision against Rocky). However, Donnie has won the respect of Conlan and the crowd; as Max Kellerman puts it while calling the fight for HBO, "Ricky Conlan won the fight, but Adonis Creed won the night." Conlan tells Donnie that he is the future of the light heavyweight division. The film ends with Donnie and a frail but improving Rocky climbing the 72 steps outside the entrance of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. ===== Dan (Klaus Tange) is an average businessman that has returned home to find that his wife has gone missing. Two young women, Françoise and Catherine, go up to Paris to work at the PTT. They are admitted with several others, including a man who wants nothing more than to go home to Martinique. Their life does not unfold as they had dreamed. First of all, the trainers are intimidating and rough. Similarly, the dream loft is just a small and dirty room. During their training, Catherine is approached by a trainer, who wants to sleep with her, but she refuses. This trainer later rapes another candidate. The two friends pass out, but during their first day of work, their colleague Carole sets a trap for them as she is jealous of Catherine's relationship with their line manager. Catherine ends up at the sorting office (instead of the counter) as a punishment for an fabricated theft. Even after passing the training, their superiors still seem eager to have sex with the women. Catherine quickly realises this and seduces her chief inspector. She is then promoted by him. At the same time, the two friends are evicted from their apartment. They discuss it in a restaurant, where Catherine explains that she is on the black list of social services, which they need to get a cheap apartment, and therefore Françoise has to go there. Meanwhile, Françoise sees a man having dinner on another table with her child, and the two continually exchange looks. When Françoise goes to the social welfare office, the official offers her an apartment, but only if she sleeps with him, which she refuses to do. After explaining this to Catherine, Catherine goes to the social services office to seduce the civil servant, and the two women end up getting the lease. One day, Françoise falls in love with a man she meets while working at the counter. This man, André, introduces Françoise to his friend Bernard, a senior civil servant at the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications. Bernard, having convinced André to leave Françoise at his place to spend the night, tries to perform sexual acts, but Françoise runs away before the act can take place. Returning home, she discovers André sleeping with Catherine. Catherine, after hearing what had happened, encourages Françoise to go back to Bernard's house so that Françoise can advance her career. She takes her best friend's advice and goes back to Bernard's house to sleep with him. She is very quickly promoted to the ministry. The Post Minister François Loubeau is concerned about his public image, being last in the poll of the most liked ministers by the French, and still not getting any attention from journalists. Françoise suggests that he makes a trip to the DOM-TOM to attract the attention of journalists. When he arrives at the airport, there are no journalists present, contrary to what was predicted by his public relations manager, Bernard. At the same time, the minister, Bernard and his deputies (including Françoise) see a crowd of journalists following another minister on a business trip. Loubeau therefore decides to cancel the visit, and prepares to return to the ministry when he discovers that Françoise, the woman he saw at the restaurant earlier, is part of the team. He therefore decides to go to Martinique as planned, but only with Françoise on holiday. During his vacation, they find a quiet beach with no one else - except for a delinquent who steals their car. They therefore have to walk to find an inhabited place where they can call the authorities to return them to Fort-de-France. They finally find a dispensary, and ask the doctor to call the Prefecture, Loubeau identifying himself as the Post Minister. Unfortunately, the official trip being cancelled, the prefect thinks, like the doctor, that the gentleman in front of him is not the real minister. Meanwhile, a postal van arrives at the dispensary to make deliveries. Loubeau and Françoise hijack it, but the postman manages to get into the truck and stops it in the middle of nowhere, wanting to drop off the two strangers. Françoise convinces him not to leave them alone, suggesting that they eat the food in the parcels he delivers together. During this 'meal', they discover that the meeting that the postman cites as the reason why he can't bring them to Fort-de-France is linked to the independence movement in Martinique, which is struggling to gain media attention, just like Loubeau. Françoise therefore suggests that Loubeau makes a video where he is << kidnapped>> by the independentists, which would generate attention for both. The postman agrees, provided he is promoted to Regional Director. The strategy works perfectly, making the headlines in French news. Loubeau, once under-appreciated, becomes a hero in the face of the independence terrorists, who also garner media attention. One evening, Loubeau has sex with Françoise. A few days later, Loubeau and Françoise are dropped off near a post office, and Loubeau enters it dramatically, as if he has fled from the terrorists and has been mistreated. Back in Paris, Françoise becomes Post Minister and visits the Post Office where she once worked. It is noted that the counters are run by the former middle managers, such as Ivan the chief inspector. Her former colleagues are all promoted. We also see that Carole Poteau has been 'sentenced' to the sorting office. Françoise visits the Inspector, the young man from Martinique to give him good news - that he can return to Martinique as Assistant Director to the recently promoted postman. She then goes to the office of her friend Catherine - now Director, who has just invited a new employee to spend the weekend with her in Trouville, a French seaside resort. Françoise asks her to guess where she is going to spend the weekend. The answer is the Élysée Palace, where Françoise, dressed in an attractive outfit, is greeted and directed inside the palace. ===== In 1980, Madrid homicide detectives Pedro Suarez and Juan Robles are sent to a 'backwater' town on the Guadalquivir Marshes in Spain's 'Deep South' to investigate the disappearance of two teenage sisters during the town's festivities. Pedro, openly critical of Spain's past during the Francoist State, has a problem with authority figures, while Juan seems not to care, though he has a troubled past of his own. The detectives meet with the girls' (Carmen and Estrella) father, Rodrigo, a local riverboat skipper. Although Rodrigo and his wife Rocío say their daughters were average girls, the duo hear from the local police that they were known for their promiscuity, and from their friends that they had a deep urge to leave the town. Rocío also gives the detectives a burnt film reel she's found, depicting the girls naked and in bed with a man whose face is obscured by a flash. Soon enough, both Carmen and Estrella are found dumped in the local marsh, having been raped and tortured to death. Troubled and with no leads, the two attempt to spy on Quini, the handsome and suave former boyfriend of Carmen. Quini, now dating another town girl, Marina, manages to sneak up on the detectives after they've followed him and attempts to threaten them with a knife. After disarming and sending him away, the two agree that Quini must be part of whatever is occurring. The problem proves to be even bigger after a drunk man named Castro tells the detectives about a similar case: his girlfriend, Beatriz, was close to Quini and the sisters, and was found dismembered in the marshes, her suitcase floating there. Pedro and Juan continue to investigate, gradually unraveling secrets. It is revealed that the riverboats and marshes are being used to smuggle and transport heroin, and that Rodrigo had stolen a kilo and sold it, getting him in trouble with the locals. However, the locals involved in the drugs seek out the detectives, revealing their participation in drug smuggling in full but claiming they had nothing to do with the sisters' deaths. One of the men does aid the investigation, however, by describing a white Dyane 6 he saw at the church where one of the girls' purse was found. After digging through more victims' items, the two see a pattern of out-of-town job brochures for women, eventually linking Quini to a man named Sebastian. Digging through Sebastian's past, they find a warrant out for him for the possible sexual molestation of a child, solidifying his chance of being the main culprit. Juan and Pedro deduce that Quini and Sebastian were luring the young women of the town, who were aching to leave and find their own independence through work, by passing these brochures around and then entrapping them into sexual slavery at a local hunting lodge. The waters grow murky, however, when Pedro becomes aware of Juan's past shooting of a girl at a protest during the Franco Era. Pedro is also angered after a possible third culprit, a local factory owner named Alfonso Corrales, is brushed over, most likely due to complex political ties. The two continue on though, eventually deducing Sebastian's cover as the watchman of the hunting lodge. Pedro attempts to tail his white Dyane 6, but loses him. With the help of a local poacher named Jesús, the trio finally chase Sebastian into the marshes. All three are shot by the sniping Sebastian, though as he is about to slay Pedro, Juan is able to sneak up and stab him, which he does repeatedly, in a state. After Sebastian falls dead into the swamp, Juan opens the trunk of the car to rescue a bruised but still alive Marina. The town is brought peace after the case is solved, as well as by the local worker's union accepting a pay raise (which in principle, they felt was too low). All seems well for the detectives too, as Pedro sees a promotion and relocation closer to his own home and wife. On the final night of their stay however, Pedro receives photographs from a journalist who has helped on the case. Though Juan justified his shooting story by saying it was his former partner's actions, the journalist reveals him to have actually been a brutal enforcer for Franco's secret police force, and to have once been known as 'The Crow'. In the morning, before they drive home, Juan asks a stoney-faced Pedro if they 'are good'. Pedro does not answer, and the two ride off to an uncertain future. ===== In 1930 in Paris, Dr Léon Galipeau examines 59-year-old Louis Martinet. Convinced that his patient has a maximum of two years to live, Galipeau convinces his brother Emile to use his 'viager' (life annuity) to buy Martinet's lovely country house in the fishing village of Saint-Tropez. (The 'viager' is a French system whereby someone with a lump sum buys a house from a person, repaying them by instalments.) Thinking Dr Galipeau is right, despite the fact that the doctor is always wrong whenever he says something (a running gag in the movie), Emile, under the advice of the notary dealing with the life annuity contract, accepts to index the 'viager' each year following the course of aluminium - a popular investment in the 1930s. Despite Dr Galipeau's repeated claims Martinet isn't long for this life, as the years go by the elderly Martinet gets better and better, and the price of the 'viager' keeps getting higher. Finally, fed up with this sick man who won't die, the whole Galipeau family decide to try to get rid of Martinet. Their attempts become more and more desperate as time goes. In 1940, an attempt to make Martinet pass for a German spy is foiled by bad timing, as it happens on the day of France's surrender. In 1943, they try to make Martinez pass for a Gaullist and a Résistant. Sadly, the letter is not delivered—until the Libération, upon which their letter allows Martinet to become a decorated hero. A few years later, during a visit of Martinet to Paris, the Galipeau attempt to make him have a heart attack, to no avail as the boy is perfectly healthy and quite happy to climb steps, smoke and drink… and so on. ===== A Munich night club owned by East Frisian Ossi Jansen (Joachim Hackethal) is in decline. The following act is shy Western Union messenger Herbie Fenton, who stuns Betty with his amazing singing voice, performing "Out of This World". In the audience are Bing Crosby's four sons, even though they are not orphans (due to "Dad and his horses"); they recognize the voice right away. Dorothy Dodge, secretary to the orphanage's main benefactor, faints during his performance. A photo of Herbie holding Dorothy up is published in Life magazine. The next day, Betty gets a much-needed job offer in New York, but it stipulates she must bring her male singer: Herbie. She talks him into signing an exclusive contract for fifty dollars per week, an easy task as he is smitten with her. They do not have enough for train fare to New York, but Dorothy gives Betty the money ... in exchange for 25% of Herbie. Then the hotel manager wants his bill paid, so the girls have to sell more shares of the contract. On the train, Betty is horrified to discover they have sold another 100% of Herbie. Betty can only hope that Herbie flops, but she doesn't know that Dorothy hires "bobby soxers" to scream and swoon at his performance. Later, Betty confides to Herbie that she wants to marry either someone handsome or one with $100,000, explaining that her mother married a vaudeville actor and she wants the security her mother never had. On The Crawford Glamour Hour radio show, Herbie sings "I'd Rather Be Me", and the bobby soxers do their job so well that J. C. Crawford, the show's sponsor, pressures Betty into signing a contract ($750 a week for the orchestra and $1000 for Herbie), reminding her that he has an exclusive option on her band. On the train after a performance, Herbie tells Betty he loves her, and he is now worth $100,000. She tells him she feels the same, but asks him to propose later, after she gets something straightened out. She summons all the contract shareholders to New York. When Herbie finds out Betty's financial dealings, he believes Betty lied about everything and quits. Crawford has arranged a big charity event, to be broadcast nationwide (to 50,000,000 potential customers) and featuring Herbie. When he finds out that Herbie refuses to perform, he threatens to sue everyone involved. The other shareholders sell out to Dorothy, who then sells all of Herbie to Crawford for a hefty profit. Meanwhile, Betty sees to it that Herbie catches a cold, so he has an excuse not to sing at the event. Crawford does not believe Herbie has lost his voice, so to keep Betty out of jail, Herbie comes up with the idea to lip sync to a recording. Thomason) is on a highway where he meets Jennifer and her young brother Satchel. While stopped, they witness several mushroom clouds that destroy nearby "targets". Satchel is blinded by looking directly at a nuclear detonation. The detonations generate an electromagnetic pulse which disables Jennifer's car. They search for and locate an old diesel vehicle which isn't affected by the EMP, and scour nearby stores collecting supplies. They meet and join with Elizabeth (Monica Keena) who tells them she saw explosions over other major cities in visual range. Car radio reports state that major cities on both the East and West coasts, have been destroyed. Hunter is shot by a frightened child while trying to find shelter in a local home. They leave immediately, unable to help the child. They find another farmhouse nearby, which the initially mistake for unoccupied. As they attempt to gain entry, Hunter's group are interrupted by Brad (Edward Furlong) and Jonathan (Ross Britz). Brad, holding them at gunpoint, tries to drive them away, but is disarmed by Hunter. Jonathan, whose grandparents own the house, agrees to let Hunter and his party join the four survivors already inside: Jonathan, his diabetic uncle Wendell, Brad, and Brad's pregnant wife Angie. Hunter organizes the survivors and instructs them to move all of their supplies into the cellar and attempt to seal it against the radioactive fallout which is coming. He tends to his own gunshot wound, finding a small bottle of antibiotics in a medicine cabinet in the bathroom. Once all of their supplies are stored in the cellar, Hunter and Jonathan barricade the door, sealing themselves inside. Hunter tells the survivors that they will need to remain inside the cellar for at least a month to avoid the fallout's worst effects. Hunter finds a Geiger counter which reveals that the radiation level is already much higher than expected. Over the next few days, Jonathan retrieves the electronics he'd stored inside a metal safe—a radio and his MP3 player, which have survived the blast. Jonathan focuses on fixing the short-wave radio, and the survivors hear news of destruction in Europe and elsewhere by nuclear bombs. Repairing the microphone allows them to begin speaking with other survivors in bunkers elsewhere in the States. They are joined by Jonathan's friend Rob (Andre Royo) a few days later, who is accidentally shot while trying to gain entry to the basement. Having been outside for longer, he has radiation burns and the early signs of radiation poisoning. He survives his gunshot wound and Jonathan, stricken with grief after accidentally shooting his friend, welcomes him into their shelter. Despite their precautions, all of the survivors begin to weaken from radiation exposure. Jonathan's uncle Wendell, already weakened by diabetes, dies first. While burying Wendell, the survivors fend off an attack by desperate survivors weakened by nearly two weeks of exposure to radiation. Angie, weakened by vomiting caused by radiation poisoning, has a miscarriage, hemorrhages, and dies. Brad, watching his wife and baby dying, draws his gun and grabs Satchel, threatening to kill him unless Hunter saves Angie; he is subdued by Jonathan who knocks him out with a shovel, and then has his hands bound. Losing contact with the survivors in the other bunker, and hearing the attack that overwhelms them, the survivors realize that there is no help coming. Hunter notices that remains of the group are slowly slipping away due to the radiation seeping into the basement. Satchel develops pneumonia, and the survivors watch helplessly as he sickens and then dies. Hunter experiences intense guilt, blaming himself for using their limited supply of antibiotics to treat his own wound. Rob, accepting the inevitable, takes Satchel's body outside to bury it. He refuses to take a gun, telling Hunter that the survivors inside will need it more. Brad, coming to terms with his grief, apologizes and is unbound by Hunter. Over the next two days, Elizabeth, Jennifer and Jonathan, beginning to lose their hair, spend most of their time sleeping, weak from radiation poisoning. Hunter and Brad, also losing hair, sit listening to movement from upstairs. Hunter tells Brad to let the others sleep, as they'll need their strength to repel the coming attack. They both accept that Rob, now outside for two days, is not coming back. The attack comes, and Hunter, realising they're vulnerable and trapped inside the basement, leads them outside after the initial wave is repelled. Now upstairs, Elizabeth is stabbed by one of the invaders and dies in Hunter's arms. Jonathan shoots one of the attackers dead, then, overcome with grief, turns the gun on himself. Jennifer watches helplessly as Jonathan kills himself. Hunter, overcome with rage at Elizabeth's death, charges outside with Brad and they both attack the man who killed her. During the melee, Brad is killed saving Hunter from the attacker, who dies after being impaled on his own weapon by Hunter. Hunter staggers back to the house finding Jonathan holding a gun on him, before turning the gun on himself. Their basement now contaminated, Hunter and Jennifer stagger upstairs and curl up in a bed to sleep. The film ends several weeks later. Only Hunter and Jennifer remain alive, seriously ill from radiation exposure, drinking contaminated water from a pump in the yard. Nearby is Rob's body, slumped against a tree, having evidently managed to bury Satchel but chose not to return to the basement before dying of the radiation. ===== Mr. Six tells of a 50-or-so-year-old street punk called "Mr. Six" who has reigned over the Beijing streets as the neighbourhood kingpin for many years. Fred turns down the offer, claiming he is not interested in performing any more – although he still composes pieces in his head when alone. Mick is a film director, and is working with a group of writers to develop the screenplay for his latest film, which he calls his "testament". Also with them is actor Jimmy Tree, who is researching for an upcoming role and frustrated that he is only remembered for his role as a robot. Lena stays at the resort and vents her anger at her father, who was always distant as she grew up. The emissary returns, and Lena cries as Fred explains that he won't perform "Simple Song #3" because the soprano part belongs only to his wife and she can no longer sing. Mick completes his screenplay and is satisfied with it. The main role is written for aging diva Brenda Morel, who has starred in eleven of his previous films. Brenda surprises Mick by arriving at the resort, and telling him that she is taking a television role instead; cinema is the past, she says, and Mick hasn't made a good film in years. He then returns to the UK to conduct "Simple Song #3" in front of the Queen and Prince. Sue confronts Coach Beiste about her medications and Beiste tells Sue that she has cancer.
