Shouta who wants none of this is arrested more than once in the aftermath of her antics. One of the girls who gets affected by Sora is Ryouko Kaburagi, a childhood friend of Shouta's as well as the dorm's leader. Ryouko who has had enough asks her friend, and boxing president Tenka Moro'oka for help. Tenka though is no match for Sora who uses a "secret 2-D art of death" technique on her which enlarges her breasts making it harder for her to fight. Due to her inability to fight at her best Tenka is expelled from the boxing club, but Shouta comes to her aid in the end. Ryouko eventually snaps from Sora's behavior and orders her out, rather than stay Shouta goes with her to Ryouko's surprise. Having nowhere to stay Tenka shyly asks Shouta if he would like to come home with her to which he accepts.

Later on things become intense when another Sora appears out of Shouta's book claiming to be the real Sora Nagihara. This Sora ends up being crueler than the first and is defeated when Shouta chooses the one he met first over her. In the third book, another character named Teruno Sakura-zaka comes out of a book owned by Ryouko and offers to help her out with her childhood crush. Teruno tricks Ryouko however, and does 2-D fighting art techniques of her own. Unable to beat her in combat, Sora is left to watch in anger until Teruno's cockiness lands her in trouble. Shouta though again goes out of his way to help another female resulting in Teruno blushing by his kindness. After the battle Shouta is introduced to Oshino Wakatsuki via her yelling to keep it down while she studies. The last volume of Gou-dere focuses on how Oshino is under tremendous pressure to study. Shouta reaches out to her to Oshino's initial resistance until she comes to realize to have fun in life as well. In the end, Shouta is stuck on the head by Ryouko who is disgusted at mistakenly finding him doing something perverted. The result of the head trauma causes a side effect from all the 2-D art techniques which results in Shouta's personality being altered and his libido increased. Sora chases after him when he goes to look for more women, and when she catches up to him Shouta confesses his love to her. Oshino comes along soon after and bashes his head again returning him to normal leaving Sora to wonder which side made the confession.

Jekyll arrives; Utterson confronts him about the will, but Jekyll refuses to consider changing it.

Jekyll tells Agnes that they should end their engagement because of sins he has committed, but will not explain. Agnes refuses to accept this, and tells Jekyll she loves him. He relents, saying that she will help him control himself, and leaves. Sir Danvers joins his daughter, and they talk about their time in Mangalore, India. In later versions (revised after its premiere), the second act contains an additional scene in which Jekyll returns home; his friends think he is protecting Hyde. Agnes, who saw Hyde before her father was murdered, wants Jekyll to accompany her to provide the police with a description, and is distraught when he refuses.

In the third act, Jekyll's servant, Poole, gives Dr. Lanyon a powder and liquid with instructions from Jekyll to give them to a person who will request them. While he waits, Lanyon speaks with Newcome, Rebecca, Agnes and Mrs. Lanyon. After the others leave, Hyde arrives for the powder and liquid. After arguing with Lanyon, he mixes them into a potion and drinks it; he immediately transforms into Jekyll.

In the final act, Jekyll has begun to change into Hyde without using the potion. Although he still needs it to change back, he has exhausted his supply. Dr. Lanyon tries to help Jekyll re-create the formula, but they are unable to find an ingredient. Jekyll asks Lanyon to bring Agnes to him, but Jekyll turns into Hyde before Lanyon returns. The film is part of a series of similar 8 mm reels that the mysterious underground figure known as "the Man in the High Castle" (later revealed to be an old resistance chief, Hawthorne Abendsen) is both collecting and distributing, to the chagrin of the Reich's Adolf Hitler, who, for initially unprecised reasons, is also collecting them. Juliana comes to believe the newsreel reflects some sort of alternate reality and is part of a larger truth about how the world should be. Her boyfriend, Frank Frink—who keeps his Jewish roots hidden to avoid extradition and death at the hands of the Nazis—believes the newsreel is some kind of hoax. Juliana learns that Trudy was transporting the film to a contact in Canon City, Colorado, in the Neutral Zone, and decides to travel there in Trudy's place, to find out what her mission was.

In Canon City, Juliana encounters Joe Blake, a member of the resistance who expects to be meeting Trudy. Eventually, Joe reconciles with Heusmann, who becomes Acting Chancellor of the Reich during Hitler's final illness and after his subsequent death, until the Nazi party can meet and select Hitler's successor. Heusmann announces on television that Hitler was assassinated by Japanese agents, and vows to bring the perpetrators to justice by any means necessary, including war. Heusmann intends to launch a Nazi nuclear onslaught against the Japanese Empire. The attack would kill tens of millions of Japanese and their emperor, level Tokyo, and decimate the Empire, forcing the surviving Japanese to absorb themselves into a global Nazi Reich that would strengthen Heusmann's position.

Smith attempts to carefully disrupt and dismantle the Heusmann conspiracy, and travels to Berlin to inform Nazi Heinrich Himmler of its existence. Smith gives Himmler a hoard of physical evidence that cannot be dismissed as hearsay, and Himmler arrests Heusmann for high treason and the murder of Hitler, also detaining Joe. She next starts working with Billy Turner, a Nazi functionary, on a new propaganda project, named ('year zero'), to "erase" the history of the former United States. This includes demolishing the Lincoln Memorial; melting the Liberty Bell to reshape it into a swastika; and destroying the Statue of Liberty (which is to be replaced by a statue of John and Thomas Smith named "The New Colossus"). Nicole becomes romantically involved with a married New York City reporter, Thelma Harris, who is later arrested in an SS raid (secretly ordered by Himmler) of a lesbian club. Himmler sends Joe to San Francisco on an ostensibly diplomatic mission, but he is actually there to kill a list of Reich defectors and Japanese functionaries, including Tagomi. Before Joe can finish, Juliana stops him by killing Joe herself. In New York City, Smith's wife Helen is devastated by Thomas' death. Smith blackmails Hoover and turns the table on Rockwell, who is exiled to Havana, German Cuba, by Himmler; Smith later has Rockwell killed, and is promoted to . In his new capacity, Smith is introduced to a secret program, headed by Nazi scientist Josef Mengele and started from studies on a woman who died and returned from another world, to send people (and troops) through to alternate Earths using a machine housed in the Lackawanna mines, where, according to string theory, an anomaly makes such multiverse travel possible. Juliana has shown Joe's secret Reich files to Tagomi, including details of the multiverse-machine, who uses them to pressure Smith to drop the embargo. Juliana begins experiencing the memories of one of her counterparts from another Earth, who was killed by Joe in the mines. She organizes an expedition with some members of the resistance to destroy the machine. Smith and Himmler witness a test of the machine, which is moderately successful; one human subject appears to travel, but several others are torn apart. Himmler immediately lifts the oil embargo, to avoid the Japanese putting any distractions on the ongoing multiverse-machine experiments. Smith's daughter Jennifer is now old enough to submit to the mandatory medical examination that revealed Thomas' illness. Fearful of the possible results and hoping for a postponement, Helen flees with her daughters to a beach house. Himmler declares the beginning of with the 's bombing of the Statue of Liberty, which incites gleeful riots by Nazi Youth in New York City. Himmler sends Nicole to a re-education camp in Germany, shortly before Wyatt and a sniper colleague start shooting, hitting Himmler but missing Smith. Juliana and Hawthorne Abendsen – the Man in the High Castle – are captured by the Nazis. Smith learns from Abendsen (who is revealed to be one of his fellow US Army Signal Corps soldiers) that people can only travel, including through the Nazi's multiverse-machine, if their counterpart on the destination Earth has died and "left a void". Smith rushes to stop Juliana from escaping, and shoots her just as she travels, disappearing before his eyes.-->

Taxi (2015 film)

''Taxi'' portrays director Jafar Panahi as he courses through the streets of Tehran while pretending to be a share taxi driver. He wants to hear a piece of his passengers' life and declines any payment for the services. His earliest passengers include a conservative-minded man who supports capital punishment and a woman supporting its abolition, a pirated video vendor named Omid who once lent foreign films not available in the country to Panahi, an injured man and his wife who both insist on recording a last will due to their panic, and a pair of superstitious old women wanting to release their goldfishes to a holy spring.

Eventually, Panahi picks up his niece Hana at her school. She discusses film-making and wants Panahi's advice on creating a short film for a school project; her teacher has talked about several rules on creating films in Iran, including the avoidance of ''siahnamayi'', or portraying a dark image about the country. However, Hana's teacher also stated that people should create films as they see fit. The two stop near a coffeehouse where Panahi meets with a family friend he has not seen for seven years. The latter inquires about a burglary he recently experienced and his dilemma of not informing the authorities about the thieves, whom he personally knows, as they are poor and have nothing else to lose. Meanwhile, Hana films a case of ''siahnamayi'' herself when she spots a boy who steals money from a couple of newlyweds and refuses to return them.

Finally, Panahi and Hana meet with Nasrin Sotoudeh, a human rights lawyer about to see the imprisoned Ghoncheh Ghavami and possibly convince her to give up her hunger strike. While adjusting her seat, Hana stumbles upon a purse belonging to one of the old women with the goldfishes. Sotoudeh decides to leave early so Panahi can deliver the purse, but not before giving him a rose as a goodwill for filmmakers. Panahi and Hana proceed to the springs and are able to return the purse; at the same time as this happens, a pair of thieves ransack the taxi, before the film cuts off.

The Secret Life of Pets

A Jack Russell Terrier named Max lives with his owner Katie in a New York apartment. While she works, he socializes with other pets in the building: tabby cat Chloe, pug Mel, dachshund Buddy, and budgerigar Sweet Pea. One day, Katie adopts the mongrel Duke, making Max envious. Enraged by Max's attitude, Duke tries to abandon Max in an alley, but they are both attacked by cats led by Sphynx cat Ozone who removes their collars and leaves them to be caught by Animal Control. Duke fears that he will be killed if he goes back to the pound. When Gidget, a white Pomeranian who is in love with Max, discovers that he is missing, she decides to find him.

Max and Duke are rescued by a white rabbit named Snowball, the leader of "the Flushed Pets," a gang of drain-dwelling animals who hate humans because their owners mistreated and rejected them. After Max and Duke pretend to despise humans by saying they killed their owners, the Flushed Pets invite them to join. Before they can prove their loyalty through a viper bite, Snowball learns that Max and Duke are domesticated. Realizing they had blown their cover, Max and Duke escape the drains and board a ferry to Brooklyn, inadvertently killing the viper in the process. Snowball vows revenge and leads the Flushed Pets after them.

Meanwhile, Gidget recruits a red-tailed hawk named Tiberius to find Max, but he mistakenly locates Ozone, whom Gidget coerces into telling what he knows about the dogs. They then enlist Mel, Buddy, Chloe, guinea pig Norman and Sweet Pea. On the way, they meet Pops, an old Basset Hound who helps Gidget and the pets find Max. Gidget and her team later encounter Snowball, who vows to kill them as well, and Norman is captured as the rest of Gidget's team flees.

In the meantime, Duke tells Max about his previous owner Fred, who adopted him as a puppy and loved spending time with him. One day, Duke got lost while chasing a butterfly and was caught by Animal Control, but Fred never came to claim him. They visit Fred's house nearby, confident Fred will still love him and take him back, but they learn from the resident cat Reginald that Fred has died. Heartbroken, Duke accuses Max of attempting to get rid of him and barks at the new homeowners who have just returned to the house and called Animal Control. The handlers catch Max, but Duke interferes long enough for Max to escape and ends up being captured instead.

While trying to rescue Duke, Max is attacked by Snowball who tries to kill him. However, when his gang is captured, Snowball realizes that he and Max must work together to rescue them. They drive a city bus into the Animal Control van on the Brooklyn Bridge, stopping traffic. The Flushed Pets encircle Max intending to harm him, unaware of Max's new partnership with Snowball, but they are saved by Gidget and her team. The van plummets into the East River as Max tries to free Duke, Snowball decides to jump into the river to give them the keys to Duke's cage and escape the van.

The entire group returns to the apartment block by pig-driven taxi. Snowball and the Flushed Pets form a new plan to annihilate all humans, but a little girl named Molly arrives and adopts Snowball, and the remaining Flushed Pets head back to the drain. At first, Snowball resists, but gives in and lets himself become re-domesticated. The other pets return to their homes and embrace their owners, and Max and Duke finally reunite with Katie.

SuperBob

In 2008, an asteroid fragment from Jupiter's gravity lands in Peckham, London hitting Robert 'Bob' Kenner, a mild-mannered and socially awkward postman. Gaining Superman-like powers, Bob initially tries to learn how to use his new powers alone, but later hands himself in after an incident where he crashed into the Shard.

He's trained by the Ministry of Defence and Bob (now known as 'SuperBob') becomes the world's first superhero, working for the MOD and the British Government as a 'civil servant'.

6 years later, Bob's boss Theresa Ford authorizes creation of a documentary to show the public that SuperBob is a 'normal guy', as his popularity is mixed with common complaints. These include his simplistic personality and him needing the people he rescues to sign several forms for the MOD. Bob still lives in Peckham with his mandatory security guard Barry and his cleaner Doris - who also works at the care home where Bob's mother lives, trying to raise money to open a nursery in Colombia. Bob explains to the camera crew that he gets a day off from work every Tuesday and reveals that he's going out for his first date in 6 years with librarian June.

While shopping for clothes with Doris for his date, Bob receives an emergency call from Theresa telling him to come in for a meeting; arguing with Doris after she points out he may miss his date with June. The meeting is in preparation for Bob to shake hands with American senator Bill Jackson. He is in London for the MOD Weapons Summit and sees SuperBob as a 'dangerous weapon that Britain doesn't have control over' (although this is mostly part of a smear campaign after America failed to poach Bob from the UK a year previously). However, after talking to June and following Doris' advice, Bob finally stands up to Theresa and leaves to go on the date. He is then called away to the care home after his mother has an accident. A misunderstanding causes Bob's mum (who has short-term memory loss) to think that he and Doris are now dating.

Wanting to keep his mum happy, the pair share a tender dance together at the home's celebration, where it is clear they share romantic feelings. However, June rings and, after confirming that they weren't standing each other up, Bob arranges for them to have dinner together at his house. After he and Doris leave the care home, Bob overhears reports of a multi-car pileup and goes to help. There, he is scolded by Theresa for not following orders and working on his day off. Despite this, he openly disobeys her, comforting to a fatally injured woman before her death. Upon returning home, Doris briefly comforts him until June arrives for dinner. Finding a note from Doris regarding a problem he had earlier, however, Bob decides not to continue with the date as he openly reveals to June that he wants to be with Doris.

The date is brought to a sudden end when Bob and June are brought to the MOD for the Weapons Summit. June reveals that Theresa stopped her from going to lunch with him and that although she does like him, Theresa and the MOD want him to be with June rather than Doris as June is American. However, upon shaking hands with Senator Jackson he learns that the US government has paid for a nursery for Doris and is sending her away. Bob reacts angrily at being manipulated before smashing through the roof of the MOD building and flying off to search for Doris – invoking a worldwide manhunt for him with sightings in several locations around the world.

Bob eventually finds Doris in the care home, with local residents forming a barrier to prevent the police from entering as they express their feelings for each other. He convinces her to go to Colombia with him to follow her dream of working with children. Explaining to the world he's resigning from the MOD and going freelance, Bob declares he is no longer a civil servant or the property of the UK and gives his number for people to call for help. Bidding farewell to Teresa and his mother, Bob and Doris fly off into the night.

In the epilogue, Bob, Doris (and Barry) have relocated to Colombia and now have a relationship, and he continues to work as a superhero. People's views on SuperBob have become more positive; Theresa has been reassigned to Afghanistan and scientists have been examining the meteorite remains in hopes of finding the source of SuperBob's powers, but haven't found anything in their 6 year investigation.

Socrates Jones: Pro Philosopher

Except for himself, accountant Socrates Jones' family are interested in philosophy. During a discussion with a door-to-door salesman who is trying to sell deer repellent, a logically useless product, his daughter Ari teaches Socrates the basics of debating

After this scene, Socrates and Ari are involved in a car accident caused by driving into a deer and find themselves trapped in The Intelligible Realm, an afterlife for philosophers. According to the Arbiter, the discussion moderator, the only way to return to the world of the living is to find the nature of morality, a key topic in philosophy. This is followed by five discussions with dead philosophers Euthyphro, Protagoras, Thomas Hobbes, John Stuart Mill and Immanuel Kant, none of whom have an impervious solution. During these discussions, the arbiter reveals that Socrates' Ancient-Greek-philosopher namesake is the only philosopher found the answer, after which he disappeared.

At the end of the game, Socrates Jones says the nature of morality might be impossible to find. The arbiter accepts this statement as Socrates' answer and declares it to be wrong, resulting in a final debate between Socrates and the arbiter about the possibility of finding the nature of morality. Impressed with Socrates' arguments, the arbiter, who is revealed to be the philosopher Socrates, allows Socrates Jones and Ari leave The Intelligible Realm.

The Doomsday Flight

At Los Angeles International Airport, a Douglas DC-8 airliner takes off for New York. Shortly after takeoff, the airline receives a bomb threat. The stranger (Edmond O'Brien) on the telephone asks for a sum of $100,000 in small denominations. He also states that the bomb is hidden in the cabin. The stranger is actually a former engineer who worked in the aviation industry.

The company Chief Pilot Bob Shea (Richard Carlson) decides to warn the flight crew. He orders pilot Capt. Anderson (Van Johnson), to circle around Las Vegas. He also asks the flight crew to search for the bomb on board. It is revealed that the bomb has an aneroid, altitude-sensitive switch and will detonate if the aircraft lands.

Meanwhile, the search to find the bomb on board the flight involves the opening of passenger hand luggage and tearing open several areas in the cabin and cockpit. All efforts are unsuccessful. The passengers are alerted to the emergency and start to panic.

The bomb threat caller telephones again to tell the police how to pay the ransom. A delivery man will simply come to the airport and take the money. The police follow the van closely, but the van has a serious accident on a ring road and catches fire. The terrorist has trouble believing the police who confirm that they are preparing a second payment. He seeks refuge at a bar, where he drinks a lot and starts talking to the bartender (Malachi Throne) who is suspicious of the caller.

When the caller has a heart attack, the bartender calls the police who come running, but the man is dead. The FBI Special Agent Frank Thompson (Jack Lord) then interrogates the bartender asking him to report the exact words of the terrorist. The police discover that the bomb will explode if the airliner drops below 4,000 feet.

The chief pilot then decides to tell the flight crew to land the aircraft at Stapleton International Airport in Denver, Colorado, whose altitude is higher, and landing there will not trigger the bomb. After the airliner is safely on the ground, the flight crew meet in the airline operations room of his company.

In the end, by chance, the bomb is discovered where it was least expected — in the pilot's chart case.

Evergreen (Adventure Time)

About 65 million years before the start of the series, during the age of dinosaurs, an ice elemental named Urgence Evergreen (voiced by Tom Kenny) created a magical crown that will grant his inner wish to destroy an incoming comet. Evergreen calls a meeting with his fellow elementals (the other three representing candy, fire, and slime) to discuss his need for them to activate the crown's power. The three other magical beings refuse as they see a flaw in Evergreen's plan if his true wish is not the destruction of the comet. This forces Evergreen to freeze his fellow elementals before seeking out three magical rubies which happen to be the eyes of a fearsome magma beast in order to power the crown. Evergreen is joined in his quest by his hopeful apprentice Gunther (voiced by Pamela Adlon), a mutated theropod dinosaur who is more like a slave than an assistant.

During the fight between the magma beast, Evergreen is nearly killed, but Gunther manages to distract the creature, allowing Evergreen to defeat it and secure the rubies. Despite this victory, he berates Gunther for not staying outside as instructed. In Evergreen's lab, the crown is completed with Evergreen adding a bonding spell so that the mind of the first possessor would be forever imprinted on the crown. But before he could use it, the blinded magma beast bursts into the room and Evergreen is incapacitated due to part of the structure collapsing as the comet approaches. Evergreen is left with no choice but to have Gunther use the crown in his place and have him wish for the comet's destruction. But once the crown is placed on Gunther's head, it reacts to the apprentice's desire to be like Evergreen. Gunther turns into a miniature version of Evergreen and begins shouting "Gunther, no!" repeatedly. This is due to the crown reacting to how he perceived Evergreen to be: a man who is constantly firing ice magic and ordering people around. Evergreen tries in vain to tell Gunther how to block the magic of the crown, but realizes too late that he never bothered to teach his mistreated apprentice any magic. The comet impacts the world, presumably killing both Gunther and Evergreen.

The scene flashes forward to the Ice King (also voiced by Tom Kenny) in present-day Ooo, who is jumping on his bed in his sleep while shouting "Gunther, no!" before making an explosion sound, signifying both Evergreen and Gunther's end. Waking up, the Ice King believes the episode to have merely been a strange dream; he is completely unaware that he actually had a vision of the events leading to the creation of his crown. Unbeknownst to the Ice King, what appears to be another comet twinkles distantly in the sky.

A God Against the Gods

The ancient Egyptian empire, which stretched from modern day Syria across northern Africa, has reached its apex under the House of Thebes, the ruling family of the 18th dynasty. However, though the long-reigning Pharaoh Amenhotep III is popular, he is not very active, and the day to day rule of the empire is actually performed by his wife, Queen Tiye, who is beloved and is known as the Great Wife. The chief counselor to the Pharaoh is her brother, Aye, who has a reputation for wisdom. The House of Thebes had encouraged devotion to the god Amon-Ra, whose cult has become very powerful. Amenhotep had hoped to control the priests of Amon by making his wife’s brother, Aanen, the High Priest, but as Tiye feared, Aanen has tried to make the priests of Amon of equal power with the throne. To counter them, Amenhotep has made his six-year-old son Tuthmose high priest of another cult, and plans on making him co-regent. The priests of Amon insist on accompanying him to the ceremony, and then drown him in shallow water, claiming he fell in.

Grief-stricken and furious, the Amenhotep and Tiye decide to emphasize the cult of the Aten. Like Amon, it is a manifestation of the overarching deity, Ra, the Sun. Tiye delivers a son whom they name Amenhotep, and dedicate to the Aten. Aye loses his wife in childbirth the same day, but the baby girl survives and is named Nefertiti. Amenhotep IV is at first healthy and happy, but is then stricken with a strange disease that misshapes his head and body. When he comes of age, he is married to Nefertiti. Now co-regent, Amenhotep IV is very dedicated to the Aten, and gives the deity a new symbol, a sun disk with twelve rays that end in hands. While the cult of Amon is a mystery religion, with the totem of Amon kept in a dark vault, the temples that Amenhotep has built for the Aten are open and sunny. Amenhotep begins to make his public appearances naked, and commands his sculptor to portray his misshapen body exactly as it is. He explains to his family that when he prayed to the other gods, his disease did not go away, but that when he had prayed to the Aten, the disease stopped its progress.

Amenhotep takes the name Akhenaten, and announces that he is building a new capital, Akhetaten (modern day tel-el-Amarna), dedicated solely to the Aten. At this insult to Amon, the High Priest Aanen rushes at the young Pharaoh, but is instantly killed by Kaires, a trusted young soldier. As the old Pharaoh grows weaker, Akhenaten becomes stronger. He reveals that Kaires is in fact the illegitimate son of Aye, who acknowledges him in a public ceremony. Kaires takes the name Horemheb, and is given control over vast military and construction operations. Akhenaten himself does not concentrate on ruling, instead publicly worshipping the Aten, hoping to attract new adherents. The public has accepted his strangeness and are unconcerned about his devotion to one particular god, but are not interested in flowing his lead and do not want Amon to be insulted.

Akhenaten and Nefertiti are unable to have sons. Desperate for a male heir, Akhenaten makes one of his own daughters pregnant, but the baby dies in childbirth and the young princess is unable to have more children. Akhenaten turns to his own younger brother, the handsome teenager Smenkhara, to be his heir and lover. Humiliated, Nefertiti asks permission to move into her own palace, in part so she can protect her other two daughters. Akhenaten is insulted. The relationship between the men becomes public, and the populace is not pleased. The family—including Akhenaten’s mother Tiye—try to maintain order, but are finding it increasingly difficult.

The old Pharaoh Amenhotep III finally dies, and people can be heard to hiss at Akhenaten during the funeral procession to the Valley of the Kings. The hissing is especially audible when the procession stops by the temple of Amon on the way. After Amenhotep is interred, Akhenaten suddenly orders the royal barge to return to the temple of Amon. Furious at the hissing of the crowd, he orders his troops to batter down the doors to the temple, and has the statue of Amon brought out of its dark cell and thrown into the Nile, to the horror of everyone. Akhenaten announces that from that point on, the only legal religion is that of the Aten, and everyone is required to worship him alone. He also announces that Nefertiti cannot bear sons and deems her unfit to be Queen. He makes Smenhkara his co-regent, noting the boy to be "one with me in our hearts, bodies, and all things".

Fall (2014 film)

The film follows the mundane life of Father Sam, who tends to his small Niagara Falls parish. He appears to simply be wearily going through the motions of his life routine.

Father Sam's life is forced into descent when he receives a letter from a man named Christopher, now on his death bed, who Father Sam had mentored 40 years ago. The letter alludes to an incident when Father Sam shared a bed with Christopher when he was 14 years old, and asks whether anything inappropriate had occurred.

This leads Father Sam to embark on a roadtrip to Northern Ontario where he visits his mother and sister, and then to confront Christopher's widow Catherine. She bitterly accuses him of having sexually molested her late husband. Father Sam denies the accusation, but it is apparent that not even he is exactly sure about what happened 40 years ago during that night.

Murder in the Big House

Upon receiving a message from death row inmate "Dapper Dan" Malloy (Michael Ames), "Scoop" Conner (George Meeker), top investigative reporter for the ''Morning News'', visits him in prison and learns that before he is to die in the electric chair the following day, Malloy intends to incriminate some top officials complicit in corruption and the murder of the district attorney for which Malloy and his criminal associate "Mile-Away" Gordon (Roland Drew) were sentenced. Trying to prevent the exposure, Malloy's lawyer Bill Burgen (Douglas Wood), himself a member of the corrupt clique, falsely comforts Malloy with the claim that the governor will pardon him after first commuting the sentence to life imprisonment during a radio speech.

New young reporter Bert Bell (Van Johnson) who hopes to convince chief editor Jim "Pop" Ainslee (Joseph Crehan) to give him a chance to cover important events, talks about it with another young reporter, Gladys Wayne (Faye Emerson), who gives him quick-witted supportive advice. Meanwhile, Ainslee contacts the governor and, finding out that the execution will proceed as scheduled, assigns "Scoop" to go to the prison for Malloy's incriminating information. "Scoop", however, has managed to drink himself into a stupor, so Gladys takes the quick decision of handling it herself and has Bert accompany her to the prison. The night of the execution is stormy and reverberates with thunder as Warden Bevins (William Gould) tells the assembled reporters that Malloy has just been punished by a higher power via the bolt of lightning which fatally struck him through the window of his cell.

Malloy's body is displayed for the reporters and the doctor confirms that he died by electricity. Bert secretly photographs Malloy's burns and, back at the office, Ainslee fires and then assigns "Scoop", Bert and Gladys to the case, when she tells him that Malloy was murdered in the electric chair to prevent him from talking. Warden Bevins readily agrees to an investigation, with "Scoop" and Bert being told by everyone, including "Mile-Away" Gordon that Malloy could not have been taken to the chair without anyone's knowledge or notice. "Scoop" and Bert become disheartened and decide to return but, during the drive back, their car becomes the target of bullets and attack by another automobile, causing it to crash. Leaving the seriously injured "Scoop" in the wrecked car, Bert sets out for help. Meanwhile, attorney Burgen has been trying to convince Gordon's wife (Ruth Ford) of the same "pardon" scheme that he had previously used for Malloy, but she is dubious.

Burgen returns to his limousine which is driven by Mike (Bill Phillips), who turns out to be the shooter who tried to kill "Scoop" and Bert. He sees Bert go to Mrs. Gordon's residence and tries to shoot both of them just as Bert finds out from Mrs. Gordon that Molloy was listening to the governor's speech through headphones which may have been electrified. Bert calls Ainslee to inform him that "Scoop" has been taken to a hospital and asks Mrs. Gordon for a chance to visit her husband in prison. On the night of Gordon's execution, he is also given headphones by the warden who arranges for these to be attached to the electric chair's high voltage. Bert exposes the method used to kill Malloy and tells Warden Bevins that he might as well sign a confession exposing the corrupt officials whom the murdered district attorney was in the process of indicting. Bevins points a gun at Bert, but Bert had earlier removed the bullets. A struggle ensues and the older Bevins loses. Chastened and defeated, Bevins names the corruptors, key among whom is lawyer Burgen. The governor decides not to execute Gordon, while Bert and Gladys end the film with a bantering conversation about marriage.

Pamela (Loretta Young) pretends to be a rich lady, Moira (Marjorie Weaver) her personal maid and Elizabeth (Pauline Moore) her personal secretary. Moira and Liz do not like the idea, but Pam talks them into it.

When they check into a Santa Barbara hotel under their rehearsed roles, Steve Harrington (David Niven), who is taking a call at the front desk, is enchanted, but Pam thinks he is a gold digger, so she gives him a chilly reception. Later, Mike Brophy (Stuart Erwin), a hotel waiter, proves most informative about who is wealthy and who is not. Steve is. When Pam causes a boating accident, Steve is knocked into the water. She jumps in and pretends to be drowning, but discovers that he is in trouble himself, so she rescues him, punching him when he struggles too much. They are observed by an amused Van Dam Smith (Joel McCrea), another very rich young man. It turns out that Steve can swim; he just had trouble taking off his boots. Soon Pam has not one but two suitors. However, the money runs out, and the sisters cannot even pay their hotel bill in full. Pam pressures Moira into borrowing $100 from Mike under false pretenses.

Fortunately, Van proposes. Pam accepts and confesses everything to him. He then informs her that he is deeply in debt. His rich grandfather left all his millions in trust for his zoos and animals. She still wants to marry him, but he insists that Steve is the husband for her. He then tells Steve that he is leaving town. Steve wastes no time in proposing to Pam; she accepts. Unfortunately, when she tells Moira the news, Mike overhears everything. Disgusted, he decides to tell Steve, but the women manage to lock him in the bathroom. They quickly pack and leave for Steve's California ranch.

Steve warns them that he has an odd but well-meaning sister, Miriam (Binnie Barnes). Miriam insists they go to a nightclub to celebrate. There she picks up Van Dam Smith at the bar. When she discovers that the others already know Van, she insists he stay at their place and be best man at the wedding, much to Pam's discomfort.

Meantime Mike has followed the women and has been hired as a "personal bartender" by Miriam. When they are alone, Mike tells Pam that he will put her "on probation" and that whether or not he tells Steve depends on how she behaves; he also confesses to loving Moira. Eventually, Van can stand it no longer. He tells Pam that her wedding cannot go on. Pam weakens and they embrace. Steve comes in at this point. After Pam tells him everything about herself and her sisters, Steve realizes he has fallen in love with Elizabeth. She accepts his proposal. Then they learn that Mike married Moira the day before, and that he is wealthy too, with a 100,000 acre ranch in Montana and 15,000 head of cattle. At the end, Pamela explains to Van that "it's just that easy to fall in love with a poor man as a rich one" - the opposite of what she said to her sisters at the beginning.

Nunzio (film)

He lives at home with his doting mother (Morgana King) and has a job as a bicycle delivery man for Angelo (Joe Spinell), the neighborhood grocer, which Angelo provides as a favor for Nunzio's brother Jamesie (James Andronica). Nunzio is fixated on elements of superhero stories; he wears sweatshirts that he has emblazoned with a shield and a capital "N" in the style of Superman's shield, along with a cape, and often walks and jumps across his neighborhood's rooftops, stopping short of actually trying to fly. Younger children enjoy his company, particularly Georgie (Glenn Scarpelli), whom he suggests will one day have to take his place as neighborhood do-gooder. However, he is also constantly bullied by a gang of youths, led by JoJo (Vincent Russo), who enjoy ridiculing his dress and taking advantage of his diminished faculties.

In a series of vignettes, Nunzio undergoes challenges to his life. He becomes infatuated with Michelle (Tovah Feldshuh), an attractive employee at the local bakery, but when he expresses his affection for her, he is heartbroken to learn she is married with a child. He begins to refuse tips for delivering groceries, feeling that since Superman never asks for money for doing good things for people, neither should he, which worries his mother and brother. When delivering groceries to the home of Maryann (Theresa Saldana), JoJo's sometime girlfriend, she coerces him into having sex with her, which leaves them both feeling guilty and uncomfortable, a feeling which increases when Nunzio confesses it to his local priest and the priest replies with fiery rhetoric about punishment and Hell. Most of all, Nunzio despairs that he is burdening his mother with caring for him and his brother with defending him against the neighborhood bullies, and begins to neglect his job at Angelo's. After an argument with Jamesie, Nunzio decides to pack a bag and leave home.

As he walks the streets, Nunzio again encounters JoJo and his friends, who chase him into an apartment building's basement where he successfully hides and escapes from them. However, in their pursuit, the men inadvertently start a fire in the basement that quickly spreads. Nunzio, who is on the roof when the blaze erupts, descends the fire escape and knocks on every window he can to warn the residents to leave. Most everyone escapes, but Nunzio notices one resident who is still stuck in her apartment and passes out, and climbs back up to retrieve her; she is revealed to have leg braces. He carries her down, but is alerted by her that she has a sleeping child in the apartment, so he returns and collects the baby. By this time, he cannot get out the fire escape he came in from, and goes up the building stairs to the roof instead, which is too high for the fire department to reach with their ladder. He improvises swaddling from his jacket to wrap the child up, and ties the bundle to his back with a scrap of rope. Nunzio then leaps from the roof to a lower landing, falling on his chest, which allows the firemen to reach him and retrieve the child.

A few days later, Nunzio and his friends and family, including the woman and child he saved from the building, assemble on their building's stoop to pose for a photograph, holding the newspaper headline that describes him as "Superman."

Saint Odd

Odd Thomas returns to Pico Mundo only to find himself immediately under attack from surviving members of the satanic cult he encountered in previous books. As he rides the back roads on a heavy motorcycle, he survives the first attempt on his life by evading a large SUV. Odd travels off road and tricks the driver of the SUV into driving into a deep gully, killing anyone inside as the SUV explodes. Odd first travels to the mall where Stormy and 18 others were murdered, narrowly avoiding three cultists who, coincidentally or through Odd's psychic magnetism, are visiting the mall where the cult's members nearly caused hundreds of deaths. Odd takes the bike to a safe house run by the same organization he helped in the last novel after meeting Mrs. Fischer. The safe house is run by an older couple who tell him they've been married for years and, as the husband says, have only had "5 bad days in all those years." His wife contradicts him saying "There were 6, you need to figure out where we're differing." Odd sleeps in the house's guest room and dreams of Pico Mundo flooded with visions of people, both recognized and not, floating by him and having expressions of rage. After reuniting with the Chief Porter and novelist Ozzy Boone, he discovers that the cult has obtained enough C4 to destroy a nearby dam. Destroying the dam would partially flood the town, but not enough to cause the destruction and death in his vision. He visits the dam and has an epiphany after seeing coyotes.

Odd returns to the safe house to find it under siege from the cultists, all of whom end up dead at the hands of the caretakers. Mrs. Fischer and a "Cleaning Crew" arrive and make the safe house as if nobody ever lived there while Odd and Mrs. Fischer meet in her limo. He is then forced to embark on a violent cat and mouse game with the cultists. A paramilitary strike team chases him through an almond orchard and, failing to locate him, begin blowing up the orchard's buildings. Using the explosions to cover his escape, Odd discovers two cultists talking about conducting the ritual rape and killing of a small family who own a ranch nearby. Odd kills the cultists and runs to the farmhouse in time to get the family to hide in the barn. Odd hides in the landscaping and then enters the house, following the cultists after they make their incursion. Odd ends up killing all of the cult members including a female he described as having an "innocent child's face." Odd suffers a deep knife wound from the female cultist before she dies, and then sees her ghost waiting for him. Odd ignores her, which causes her to go into a poltergeist rage while Odd escapes the house.

Thomas notes the demons ("Bodachs") that previously congregated in advance of violent events are not in evidence. He finally determines that the cult is planning to release a deadly version of the rabies virus through the prank air blasts emanating from a funhouse in a visiting carnival. The Bodachs have not appeared because they are only interested in immediate violence, not disease. He is able to stop the plot, but at the cost of a mortal gunshot wound. After death, he is reunited with his girlfriend Stormy Llewellyn who briefs him on what he will be encountering in the afterlife. His author friend then finds the manuscript of this book mysteriously printing on his laser printer.

Hawk (novel)

An assassination attempt against Vlad Taltos, which takes place in his hometown of Adrilankha during a visit to his young son and estranged wife, nearly succeeds. In response to the attempt, Taltos decides that he will no longer run from the Jhereg criminal organization that placed a price on his head, and sets in motion "all sorts of intricate plots and schemes that guess, second-guess and third-guess his adversaries (often incorrectly)".

Noting the protagonist's characteristically unreliable first-person narration, another reviewer notes, "This being Vlad (and Brust), the plan is typically complex and convoluted and really doesn't matter all that much, partly because Vlad doesn't really fill the reader in on everything that’s happening. But if it helps, it involves a Hawk egg, a wand, and a euphonium."

In a review of the book, science fiction writer Cory Doctorow points to "two seemingly irreconcilable facts: a son that Vlad wants to be around, and a city where he is a dead man walking. There's only one way to resolve it, and that's to find a way to buy off, intimidate, or otherwise manipulate the Jhereg into forgiving him for committing the cardinal sin of betraying them to the authorities (without dying first)."

To execute his complex scheme, Taltos calls upon numerous old friends, including Daymar, an academic expert in sorcery from the House of the Hawk.

The Call (Hersey novel)

The novel mixes narrative, excerpts from Treadup's journal, letters written by Treadup and his wife. and excerpts from "The Search," an extended memoir which he wrote while in a Japanese internment camp during the Second Sino-Japanese War. This organization allows Hersey to show what Treadup thought at the time of events and then what he thought about them up to forty years later.

The first section of the novel describes Treadup's ancestors, a long-established Anglo-Saxon family. David himself was born 1878 in western New York, then graduated from Syracuse University. The call to missionary work comes in his last year in college, when he hears a visiting minister, John R. Mott, who is proselytizing for the Student Volunteer Movement For Foreign Missions, a liberal evangelistic organization. Treadup volunteers to go to China for the YMCA, but the Y will not let him go if he does not have a wife. Treadup arranges with Emily Kean to join him in China a year later, and after a further year they are married. When he arrives in Tianjin, or Tientsin as it was then spelled, Treadup joins the educational and scientific work of the YMCA.

At the 1907 China Centenary Missionary Conference in Shanghai, Treadup takes part in the debate between the older evangelists, who insist that their only mission is to spread the gospel, and the newly arrived missionaries of the Social Gospel persuasion like himself, who are convinced that their mission is good works, that is, the uplift of society through science, education, and social change. Through the decade of the 1910s, Treadup organizes campaigns to introduce modern science to the educated men of the city in the hope that they will spread this knowledge down to the masses. He uses posters, pictures, and scientific demonstrations to arouse interest among the audience, for instance a gyroscope, with which he performs impressive feats. This work is modeled on that of Hersey's father, Roscoe.

The science campaigns are successful but conversions few. Treadup then meets the dynamic Christian "Johnny Wu," modeled on "Jimmy Yen" (Y.C. James Yen), who mounted a nationwide literacy campaign for the Chinese National Y.M.C.A. after World War I. In the face of mounting opposition to imperialism and foreign missions, which led to an anti-Christian movement among young intellectuals, Wu moves to the countryside and sparks the Rural Reconstruction Movement at just the time when Mao Zedong was also moving from the city to the village. Treadup is inspired to join Wu, but Wu replies that foreigners are not welcome. Treadup instead moves to Paoting (Baoding), Hebei, where the actual missionary Hugh Hubbard worked. In the 1930s, Treadup becomes troubled about the usefulness of the American version of Christianity to China's problems. As the Fundamentalist–Modernist Controversy develops at home and in China, he is criticized by his mission board at home for being a "humanist" rather than a true Christian devoted to a personal God and Jesus as his personal savior. Other missionaries at that time, such as Pearl S. Buck, underwent similar doubts and questioning.

At the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War Treadup, like the actual missionary Lewis Gilbert, witnesses the Nanking Massacre, and asks why God would allow such atrocities. When war between the United States and Japan is declared in 1941, Treadup is imprisoned in the Weixian Internment Camp, as were many actual missionaries such as John Leighton Stuart.

After the end of the war in 1945, as Mao's forces take over China, Treadup leaves for home disillusioned with the American mission in China. He reflects that he came to China motivated by personal need, group psychology, hypnotism by the preacher who aroused his idealism, and fear for himself.

The novel ends with a note that Treadup's oldest son, Philip, tried in vain to get his father's ashes buried in Shanghai in 1981.

Drums for Rancas

In magical realist style, ''Drums for Rancas'' tells, in essence, two stories. Each story is told in alternate chapters, in what has best been described as a narrative double helix. The first story, told in the odd numbered chapters, is that of the impending, and finally frustrated, confrontation between Héctor Chacón “el Nictálope” and Judge Montenegro. The second, told in the evennumbered chapters, is that of the parallel confrontation between the comuneros of the subsistence agricultural community of Rancas and the multinational Cerro de Pasco Corporation; the latter’s presence manifested through the corporation’s goons and the anthropomorphized fence they install in the cover of darkness. This novel conforms with the rest of the Spanish-American indigenist novels in theme, but not so in style. The love that Scorza feels for his tattered Indians is conveyed by means of a tenderness coupled to a soft irony. His ragged, dirty heroes are the only characters in the novel endowed with a sense of dignity. There is in the plot an ever present atmosphere of impending doom, with "the Company" always in the background as a faceless, sinister force.

The villagers of Rancas are forced to wage a desperate and fruitless war against the colossal Pasto Corporation, which in the 1950s set out to build an immense empire in the Andes by fencing Quechua communities out of their grazing lands. The outcome is inevitable and typical of most Spanish- American novels of social protest: the oppressed serfs are massacred by the national army, always at the service of foreign interests. The novel ends with the souls of the dead Indians in their graves, talking about the fate they always have to suffer when facing the rich and the powerful.

Old Love (story)

The story follows two students, William Thatcher and Philippa Jameson, of English literature from Oxford in the 1930s. They both fell in enmity with each other in their first sight. The mutual hatred began a fierce sense of competition between them which enabled them to outshine their contemporaries, but to remain neck-to-neck with each other. The mutual loathing gave way to the epithet "that silly woman" to Phillippa and "that arrogant man" to William. They equally loved each other but never showed up at all.

They always used to fight against a topic. both excelled as toppers in their final degree exam: The Charles Oldham essay on Shakespeare competition and they both won it.

In between, Philippa's father's death brought them closer and they fell in love. After the marriage, legend has it that they were never apart for more than a few hours. They had their honeymoon in Athens which ended up in a heated argument over the relative significance of Doric and Ionic architecture.

They were both equally talented in their fields of interests and when Phillippa was made a Dame, William was also Knighted.

Philippa's most irritating habit, to William, was her determination each morning to complete "The Times" crossword before he arrived at the breakfast table. One fine morning in June before their retirement, William, studying the clue, filled in the eight boxes left incomplete by Philippa. Philippa instantly retorted that there was no such word. To her delight, the word ''whymwham'' could not be found in the shorter Oxford Dictionary. William assured her that the word could be found in OED on his desk, which is made for scholars like him, and left for college.

Having closed the front door, as she entered the kitchen, Philippa suddenly suffered a heart attack. Heart attacks in women were less common compared to men. She called out to William in vain. The news of her death was conveyed and the story ends with Sir William's suicide note (he shot himself with his pistol): "Forgive me, but I had to let her know". There was the volume of the work of John Skelton held open in one of his hand with the word ''Whym Wham'' underlined neatly, his fingers stiff and cold around it.

And as "the legend has it, they were never apart for more than a few hours" even in their deaths.

Dope (2015 film)

Malcolm Adekanbi and his best friends, Jib and Diggy, are high school "geeks" living in "The Bottoms," a high-crime neighborhood in Inglewood, California. They idolize 90's hip hop music and fashion. Malcolm is confident he will be admitted to his dream school, Harvard University, but his school counselor is skeptical and suggests he take an interview with local businessman and Harvard alumnus, Austin Jacoby.

While biking home, Malcolm is stopped by Dom, a drug dealer who instructs him to invite a girl named Nakia to his party. Malcolm charms Nakia, who tells him she will only accept if Malcolm goes as well. Jib and Diggy accompany Malcolm to the party, where Dom’s purchase of high-grade, powdered molly is interrupted by an armed gang, and several people are shot. Malcolm escapes as the police arrive, unaware that Dom has hidden the drugs and a gun in his backpack. Nakia drives Malcolm home, and he offers to help her with her GED.

The next day, Malcolm discovers the drugs, gun, and an iPhone. An unknown caller reveals that he knows Malcolm's identity, and instructs him to turn over the drugs. After school, Malcolm prepares to hand over the drugs when he receives a call from Dom, in custody, who tells Malcolm not to give the drugs to the other caller. He texts Malcolm an address and tells him to ask for AJ.

Malcolm, Jib and Diggy flee to the address, chased by the unknown caller, and are greeted by Jaleel and his sister Lily. Since AJ, their father, isn't home, Jaleel invites them inside their mansion and takes Jib and Diggy out for food, while Lily seduces Malcolm, finds the drugs and takes a heavy dose. Intoxicated, Lily passes out while driving Malcolm to his interview before urinating on a bush while bystanders record, and Malcolm drives her car to the meeting himself.

Arriving at Jacoby's office, he notices photos of Dom, Lily, and Jaleel and realizes Jacoby is AJ. Malcolm relays Dom's instructions to Jacoby, who denies any knowledge and implies that the contents of the bag are now Malcolm's responsibility. Jacoby reschedules the interview, warning Malcolm that if he has not sold the drugs by then, he will not receive Jacoby’s recommendation to Harvard.

Malcolm, Jib and Diggy seek help from hacker Will Sherwood, who sets up an online black-market website to sell the drugs through Bitcoin transactions, which soon goes viral. The three friends enroll in a Google Science Fair project to access the school lab and computer room, where they can sell the drugs to the various buyers. Even though no one suspects them, they almost get caught one day during a routine police search. This episode frightens Jib who wants to leave, but eventually accepts to go on to finish the sales.

Malcolm helps Nakia study, and she opens up to him, but he accuses her of being sent by Dom and pushes her away. The next day, Malcolm asks Will to extract cash from the Bitcoins, and arranges a meeting with a money-laundering gangster named Fidel. Malcolm leaves the meeting with a bag of cash, but is assaulted by the school bully, who takes the bag. Desperate, Malcolm pulls out the gun, retrieving the money and earning the bully's respect.

Returning to AJ's office, Malcolm tells Jacoby that he has sold the drugs but has left a trail leading to Jacoby – unless Jacoby gets him admitted to Harvard, Malcolm will transfer the Bitcoins to Jacoby's checking account, incriminating Jacoby for the sale and leading to his arrest. Later Malcolm types his college application essay, describing two students – Student A is a music geek who plays in a punk band and gets straight As, while Student B suffers in the hood and makes money in immoral ways. He asks, "Which student do you think I am?"

Malcolm gets a modern hair cut and waits for Nakia at prom, but she does not show. Later, Nakia meets Malcolm at his home and thanks him for helping her pass her GED, giving him a pass to Six Flags and kissing him on the cheek. He returns to his room to find a letter from Harvard on his bed. He opens it and looks at the audience before smiling.

It states: "Julia Seaton, a rich heiress, has two suitors, Dr. John Seymour, a wealthy physician, and Richard Calhoun, a poor lawyer. They both propose in the same evening, but while inclined to prefer John, Julia has not yet made a definite choice, and tells both to come back in a month for their answer. The scene shifts to the squalid home of the charwoman, Mrs. Smith, who, ill in bed and unable to earn the rent money, is about to be evicted with her tiny daughter May. The mother faints from weakness, and May rushes for a doctor. She sees Seymour's sign in a window, and asks him to help her mother. Then the man shows his caliber. Because she has no money, he turns her away. Calhoun, the lawyer, meets May, learns of her plight, and, although poor, pays the overdue rent, and the family moved back in the house. On her death bed, Mrs. Smith is found by Miss Seaton, who is visiting the poor quarters on charity work, and on the charwoman's passing, society girl adopts poor little May. The child becomes a happy member of the Seaton family and at the end of the month is a fast friend of the kind-hearted Julia. At sight of Seymour, she recalls the physician who turned her away, and denounces him to his own and Miss Julia's face. May recognizes Calhoun as the friend in need, and tells Miss Julia so. He is fascinated with the wonders of the parade and follows it to the circus grounds, around which he stays all morning, and is finally tempted by his great wish to see the show, to crawl under the tent. He is discovered by a circus guard, and ordered off the ground. A small girl, Lillie Lockwood, and her father come to the circus, and witness Tom's ejection. Urged by his daughter, Lillie's father buys Tom a ticket of admission, giving him his first happy day. In return, Tom gives Lillie, as a keepsake, his most treasured possession, his pocket knife. On returning home, Tom is severely chastised by his step-father, after which he decides to run away. He walks to a neighboring town, and is there engaged as an office boy by Gates, a lawyer. After some years of faithful service, in various capacities, Tom becomes a member of the firm. Lillie obtains a position as a stenographer in their office. She and Tom do not recognize each other, until Tom accidentally sees in her hand the little knife he had given her in the long ago. Against the Sun

On January 16, 1942, US Navy airmen pilot Harold Dixon (Garret Dillahunt), bombardier Tony Pastula (Tom Felton) and radioman Gene Aldrich (Jake Abel), flying a Douglas TBD Devastator torpedo bomber from the aircraft carrier USS ''Enterprise'', encounter problems on a patrol mission over the South Pacific. Separated from other aircraft on the mission and unable to get their bearings, Dixon makes a decision to head back to the carrier.

Radioman Aldrich announces they are out of range of reception. Running low in fuel and unsure of their exact location, Dixon orders his crew to prepare for the ditching and to assemble their survival gear. After making a successful ditching, the survivors find themselves on a tiny life raft, surrounded by open ocean. Even seeing a dive bomber from their carrier searching for them, they realize that the search is too far away from their position, and the rescue effort will soon move away from them. Dixon describes their predicament as "lost at sea", the naval term for giving up the search.

With Dixon taking charge, an inventory of their survival gear is made. They realize there are no oars, or map, and more importantly, no food or water. With little hope of rescue, they drift across the ocean. Aldrich is eventually able to kill a shark after it attacks their makeshift fishing rod, which they then eat to stave off starvation, and rainfall initially prevents dehydration, though rations for both dwindle and the 3 are forced to drink their own urine. Aldrich's hand is bitten by a shark, and Dixon is almost eaten after retrieving a bird that Aldrich had shot.

Tensions rise and Aldrich turns on Dixon prompting the latter to reveal that he fell asleep prior to their having to ditch the plane, and is the reason that they became lost in the first place, despite this both men are able to partially forgive Dixon after he uses their shoes as makeshift oars. They begin to row and agree that whoever spots land first is owed a meal by the other 2, "anything he wants, anywhere he wants". Despite this optimism, a storm hits the raft and Tony is nearly lost, though all 3 survive now with no supplies. At their lowest point and nearly dead, the trio spot land and was up on the shore of an island, PukaPuka.

Credits reveal they spent 34 days at sea, having rowed for over 1000 miles. Dixon was awarded the Navy Cross and never flew again. Tony was unable to continue with the Navy though his ashes were scatterred at sea upon his death in 1986. Aldrich continued as a Radioman and married Tony's sister, Frances, in 1946.

Eyad excels in the classroom and begins to earn the trust and respect of his Jewish peers. He begins to sell falafel and bagels and starts to finally feel comfortable at the school. One day, as Eyad and Naomi are walking in the streets, Naomi asks Eyad to tell her he loves her in Arabic, whereupon an Israeli soldier overhears Eyad, asks to see his ID card, and aggressively questions him.

In English class, Eyad and Naomi declare their love to the others and want to tell the world about their relationship. Once Naomi tells her parents about her Palestinian boyfriend, she is no longer allowed to go back to school. Eyad also drops out of school and asks the principal to inform Naomi's parents that she can now go back to school as he is no longer there. The decision angers Eyad's father and he is no longer welcome at home, so he moves to a flat in East Jerusalem and begins to seek work as a waiter. After many unsuccessful attempts, he lands a job as a dishwasher.

By this point, Yonatan's health has deteriorated significantly and he is no longer able to move. Yonatan's mother asks Eyad to move in with them, as she trusts him and cannot take care of Yonatan by herself.

Eyad realizes that he and Yonatan resemble each other, takes Yonatan's Israeli ID, and becomes a waiter. Yonatan's mother (Yael Abecassis) finds out, but allows Eyad to continue as long as no one ever finds out. Using Yonatan's ID, Eyad takes Yonatan's final exams and scores highly for both of them. Naomi serves in the IDF and tells Eyad that she is sick of lying and chooses to break things off. A while later, Yonatan dies, while Eyad (posing as Yonatan) informs the Muslim authorities that the Muslim Eyad has died. Eyad and Yonatan's mother attend the funeral and the screen goes white.

Wikipedia:List of hoaxes on Wikipedia/The Lying Student

The poem is divided into four sections. '''Section 1''' (lines 1–51) takes the form of a bildungsroman, and tells the story of Parizek, a young Bohemian boy who leaves his village after his father is murdered by his uncle. He eventually arrives in Southern Ukraine, where he is welcomed by the locals. Twenty years later, he returns to his home and avenges his father's death. '''Section 2''' (lines 52–145) is told in first person by Vilém, a young student who has just finished writing the story of Parizek as a work of fiction. That night, in a dream sequence, an army of demons carries him away to a crescent-shaped island for refusing to believe in the story himself. There he spends 20 years listening to stories told by a human-headed bird resembling the mythological gamayun. From the bird, Vilém perfects the art of storytelling. '''Section 3''' (lines 146–303) begins when Vilém wakes up. He rewrites his story and publishes it in a newspaper. Believing it to be true, the Czech people make Parizek into a national hero and use him to inspire a rebellion. In '''Section 4''' (lines 304–380), Vilém is put on trial by the Austro-Hungarian Empire for creating the fictional character that incited rebellion. Vilém is banished, just like his protagonist was. The last pages of the manuscript, containing the ending, has been lost.

Hazmat (film)

''Scary Antics'', a struggling reality show about pranking people, finds its next "chump" in the form of Jacob, an awkward young man who is convinced that the abandoned chemical plant where his father died is haunted. Jacob was brought to the attention of the show by his friend Adam, who believes that pranking Jacob might scare him enough to make him move past his father's death, and his obsession with the plant.

Adam, his girlfriend Carla, and her friend Melanie are to take Jacob to the plant, and explore it with him as Gary the host of ''Scary Antics'', and three members of the show's crew - David, Steven, and Brenda watch them through cameras while situated in a sealed office. Jacob finds and puts on an incomplete hazmat suit before an actor named Tim, who is wearing a full hazmat suit, jumps out to frighten him. Panicking, Jacob kills him with an old fire axe, and seemingly has a psychotic break due to realizing what he has done, and that he is the butt of an elaborate joke. Jacob dons Ed's mask, murders Adam and Carla, before chasing Melanie to the office, which he is unable to break into. Melanie and the others are trapped without sustenance, no way to contact help, and with no one knowing where they are due to the host going ahead with filming without informing the network, which required permits and documents that he could not afford.

After Jacob kills technician Ed when he stops by, Gary and Steven use their only map to locate the back exit, which Jacob locks after catching and murdering Steven, then chases Gary. After a brief hide and seek Gary almost exits the building when Jacob pulls him in and decapitates him. Brenda goes out and reclaims the map, but is followed back to the office by Jacob, who forces his way in before the door can be resealed. Jacob axes David while Melanie and Brenda make a run for it, trying to use the map to find another way out. Jacob finds the two, kills Melanie, and fights Brenda. During the struggle, Brenda pulls off Jacob's mask to reveal that his face and head have become disfigured and corpse-like, implying that he is possessed, and that the plant really is haunted. Brenda incapacitates Jacob, and reaches the other exit she and Melanie were looking for, but before she can escape the recovered Jacob pulls her back inside, and hacks her to pieces.

La Llorona (Grimm)

'''Opening Quote:''' "On many a dark night people would see her walking along the riverbank and crying for her children."

On the eve of Halloween, Luis Alvarez (David Barrera) spends time with his son Rafael. Luis is distracted when a mysterious crying woman in white wades into a river, apparently trying to kill herself. He follows, but can't find her. He turns to watch helplessly as she leads Rafael away by hand. Nick (David Giuntoli) and Hank (Russell Hornsby) investigate the case. Luis cannot speak English, so Nick calls Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch) to help translate.

Nick, Hank and Juliette come to Luis' home, looking for evidence of any possible suspect. Luis' neighbor Pilar (Bertila Damas) tells Juliette that the kidnapper is ''La Llorona'' ("The Weeping Woman") - a female ghost who, in several Hispanic legends, takes children and drowns them in a river. In a private moment, Pilar warns Juliette that her cat scratch is a sign that someone has cursed her. Nick asks Juliette to stay with Luis until another translator can be found.

In Albuquerque, a jaguar-like ''Wesen'' (Kate del Castillo) sees an alert on her computer about the kidnapping and leaves immediately for Portland. At the Portland precinct, she is revealed to be detective Valentina Espinoza, who claims extensive experience with the kidnapper. She tells Captain Renard (Sasha Roiz) that the woman is a serial killer, and warns a second and then a third child abduction will soon follow.

On another Portland river, ''La Llorona'' kidnaps a girl, whom she takes to her lair to join Rafael. Renard orders Nick and Hank to place Valentina in custody, following a request from the FBI. Knowing she is ''Wesen'', Nick prevents her from attacking the captain. Renard interrogates her: she warns him of a third abduction and claims the woman was responsible for her own nephew's death. Renard declares she will be detained until the FBI are ready to speak to her.

Nick and Hank go to Aunt Marie's trailer, where they learn that none of Nick's ancestors were able to determine who ''La Llorona'' was. They decide to free Valentina and start working with her. They learn that ''La Llorona'' drowns children at a point called ''abrazo del río'' ("river's embrace"), where the two rivers connect.

''La Llorona'' takes the children (including a third she has taken) to the ''abrazo'', intending to drown them and in so doing bring her own children back from the dead. The process is interrupted by the arrival of Nick, Hank and Valentina. Nick dives into the water to fight ''La Llorona''. She disappears right before his eyes. Back in the precinct, the children are reunited with their parents. Renard gently chastises Nick and Hank for their insubordination, saying the FBI has taken some of the credit and should be content with the result.

In a minor sub-plot, Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) celebrates Halloween by decorating his home and holding an event for children. Afterwards, some children - bullies whom he had prevented from stealing candy from a little girl - break one of his windows. As the episode ends, Monroe scares them with a Halloween "trick": he briefly into his ''Wesen'' form.

What Happened and What's Going On

The group is still reeling from the tragedy of Beth Greene (Emily Kinney)'s death at Grady Memorial Hospital. They decide that the best way to honor her is to complete Beth's intended mission of reuniting Noah (Tyler James Williams) with his family. The entire group makes the 530-mile journey to "Shirewilt Estates", a walled community outside of Richmond, Virginia, leaving Georgia behind. Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), Michonne (Danai Gurira), Tyreese Williams (Chad L. Coleman), Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun), and Noah decide to scout ahead and visit the compound first, while the others remain behind to be safe. In the car, Tyreese tells Noah and the others about his father who always used to tell him and Sasha Williams (Sonequa Martin-Green) that, as citizens of the world, they should listen to the news and never change the channel or turn it off, as they should always know about the atrocities that take place so they can be prepared and have their eyes open. Upon arrival, however, they discover the community has been overrun and everybody inside it killed. The words, "Wolves not far", are spray painted on a brick wall. Noah breaks down, and Tyreese stays behind to comfort him as Rick, Michonne, and Glenn scout for supplies.

Tyreese tells Noah that he wanted to give in and die when Karen (Melissa Ponzio) was killed, but that he kept on fighting, and decided to live and, as a result, he was able to protect Judith when she needed him. Noah stands and sprints to his family's home, with Tyreese in pursuit. They arrive and find Noah's family dead. Tyreese explores the house while Noah sits by his mother's corpse and apologizes for not returning home sooner. While focused on pictures of Noah's family, Tyreese is bitten by Noah's reanimated brother, whom Noah quickly dispatches with a model jet. Noah leaves immediately to retrieve Rick and the others. Tyreese suffers severe blood loss and begins to hallucinate about news stories on the radio as well as visits by Martin (Chris Coy), Bob Stookey (Lawrence Gilliard Jr.), The Governor (David Morrissey), Lizzie and Mika Samuels (Brighton Sharbino and Kyla Kenedy), and Beth Greene (Emily Kinney), who discuss his actions throughout his time with the group. Over the radio, Tyreese begins to hear a news story about a group of people traveling up the East Coast and slaughtering innocent people in gruesome ways. He also struggles internally with his recent decisions and "speaks" with his hallucinations. Bob, Beth, and the girls try to comfort and reassure him that he did the right thing, and that death is much better than being alive, but The Governor and Martin antagonize him for not being able to do what they feel needed to be done. In between his discussions Tyreese is bitten again in a skirmish with another walker, further worsening his already bleak situation.

Elsewhere, Michonne continues to express a desire to settle in one place and to fortify the town, but Rick argues that the town is indefensible, showing how part of its defensive wall had apparently been toppled by a large vehicle. They notice walkers that have been severed in half, but do not act upon it any further. Michonne then recommends going to Washington, D.C., because, although Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt) lied about a cure, D.C. may still have resources to improve their chances for survival. Rick comes around and agrees to make the 100 mile journey to Washington, which pleases Michonne. They are then alerted by Noah screaming. They find him about to be bitten by walkers, but manage to save him in time. Noah informs the others about Tyreese's condition. Tyreese is being further antagonized by The Governor while Lizzie holds his hand, though in reality this is Rick stretching his arm so Michonne can amputate it, and they suffer a grueling challenge in escaping the estate with a seriously wounded Tyreese. They fight their way through waves of walkers and pass a truck filled with walkers that have had their arms and legs cut off and the letter W carved into their foreheads. During the ride back, Tyreese is comforted by visions of Bob, Beth, and the girls. He tells Bob to turn off the radio, effectively deciding that he wants to let go and join them in death. He passes away and is put down by Michonne, so that he does not reanimate. The remaining survivors then attend his funeral, which Father Gabriel Stokes (Seth Gilliam) presides over. A visibly traumatized Sasha is seen struggling to stand throughout the service while Rick personally buries him and leaves his cap on his cross.

The Dream of Debs

The narrator, Corf, is a wealthy resident of San Francisco, with several servants. In his student days he wrote an article "The Dream of Debs", about Eugene V. Debs's idea to have a general strike, years before; now he is experiencing the reality. It is enjoyable at first, "a sort of placid adventure". At his club there is a discussion about how the situation arose: the American Federation of Labor collapsed and its place was taken by the (fictitious) ILW (which has called the strike) because, according to one member, organized labor was unfairly treated by employers: "'You smashed all the old federations and drove labor into the ILW.'"

For several days it remains peaceful; there is shortage of some provisions, and there are fewer cars, since they cannot be repaired. Later, the shortage of food becomes serious; law and order starts to break down. Corf and two other members of his club drive to the edge of the city to steal a cow; having killed it, they are joined by others. "We fought and squabbled over the division like savages." They are soon attacked by "the dreaded peace officers of the ILW." Injured, Corf and his friends, after further incidents and the abandonment of their car when a tire blows, return home without meat.

A few days later there is a general flight from the city. Corf has little to eat, and his servants have fled. He and three others from the club leave the city on horses, which would soon have been confiscated for food. Corf aims to get to Menlo, where he has a house and livestock. The streets of San Francisco are deserted; there are abandoned automobiles, and soldiers guard public buildings. By contrast, in the working-class district, where ILW men live, families are living happily.

In the country, conditions have become typical of apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction, in which civilization has collapsed and communication has ceased (as there are no newspapers, and telegraph lines have been cut). "Two hundred thousand people had fled from San Francisco... They had swept everything clean. There had been robbery and fighting. Here and there we passed bodies by the roadside and saw the blackened ruins of farmhouses." Corf finds that his house in Menlo has been emptied, and his housekeeper and other employees have all been killed. He eventually returns to San Francisco alone without his horse, which was stolen from him. He finds that the strike has been called off; the demands of the ILW have been granted.

His servants return to him. He cannot discharge them, as they have been unionized by the ILW. The story ends with the narrator writing: "The tyranny of organized labor is getting beyond endurance. Something must be done."

The Dam Keeper

Pig lives alone in a windmill on the outskirts of town. The windmill sits atop a massive wall and continually blows away a dark fog that perpetually looms outside the wall. Every day, Pig winds the windmill to keep it turning, just like his father before him.

However, in town and at school, nobody likes Pig. Even though he protects the town, the other animal children make fun of him and bully him.

Soon, a new student, Fox, arrives at the school carrying a sketchbook and quickly becomes rather popular. One day, she mistakingly drops the sketchbook while leaving the classroom, and Pig discovers that Fox draws mocking caricatures of classmates and teachers. Fox shows up the next day upset about losing the sketchbook, but she is quickly relieved to see that Pig has it with him.

That day at school, bullies drag Pig into the restroom and harass him. Fox discovers Pig in the restroom, and consoles him and teaches him to use art as an emotional outlet for his daily hardships. The two become good friends. After school one day, Pig notices Fox surrounded by several other students looking at one of her drawings and laughing. Emboldened, Pig approaches the group. Through the crowd, Pig barely sees a mean-looking caricature of himself, with "Dirty P-" written at the top. Devastated, Pig rips the drawing out of Fox's sketchbook and runs away in tears.

As evening continues, the fog draws near - Pig should be returning to his home to wind the windmill. Instead, sitting in sorrow, he puts on his gas mask and waits as the fog envelops the town while the other animals flee in terror. Eventually, Pig looks down at the drawing and discovers that he is not the only one caricatured—Fox is next to him, and the title is actually "Dirty Pals". Jolted back to his senses, Pig realizes what horrible risk the town is in. He makes his way to the windmill and manages to rid the town of the fog, losing and damaging one of the mill's propellers in the process.

Pig gazes out the window of the windmill as the fog clears and the citizens begin cleaning up. Pig remembers the drawing and begins to leave. Upon opening the door, Fox is waiting for him. They follow the trail and kill a family of snake-devils only to find the creatures wearing metal bands that indicate the recent presence of the unknown enemy. They resolve to send a message by telepathic relay south to Homeport.

Raf and three other men ride the RS 10's flitter south over an abandoned landscape and arrive at a ruined city. Near the center of the city they meet the remnant of a devastated population. The aliens are preparing a final expedition to a faraway city to retrieve knowledge that may help them regain their civilization and the captain of the Terrans accepts their invitation to join it. The expedition takes the aliens, in their globe-ship, and the Terrans, in their flitter, to an abandoned city, where the aliens loot a storehouse.

With Sssuri heading south to warn his people and the humans at Homeport, Dalgard returns to the forbidden city to spy. As Raf watches from hiding, the aliens capture Dalgard and take him to their globe-ship. Returning to their city across the sea, the aliens put Dalgard into an arena with a merman and a snake-devil. Raf rescues Dalgard and the merman and the three go into the sewers under the city, where they meet a merman war party. Re-entering the city with the war party, Raf uses two grenades to destroy the globe-ship and its cargo, but is burned in the process. The young millionaire had previously been urged to take the position as assistant editor of a popular magazine, but had declined, preferring a sodden life. He assumes the name Prince, and the novelist does not recognize him as the man whose money drove her father into financial ruin and suicide. Beauty and the Beast (2017 film)

An enchantress disguised as an old beggar woman arrives at a castle during a ball and offers the host, a cruel and selfish prince, an enchanted rose in return for shelter from a storm. When he refuses the offer, the enchantress reveals her true form and transforms the prince into a beast and the servants into household objects before erasing the castle, himself, and his servants from the memories of their loved ones and everyone else in the town. She warns the prince that the curse will be broken, only if he can learn to love another and have that person love him in return by the time the last petal of the rose falls, or else he will remain a beast for the rest of his life while his servants become inanimate.

Several years later, in the small town of Villeneuve, Belle, the book-loving daughter of a widowed artist named Maurice, dreams of adventure. She constantly brushes off advances from Gaston, an arrogant war veteran as he is not the type of man Belle wishes to marry. On Maurice's way to the market, he becomes lost in the forest and after narrowly escaping a pack of wolves he seeks refuge in the Beast's castle. However, the Beast imprisons him when he "stole" a rose from his garden as a gift to Belle. When Maurice's horse returns without him, Belle ventures out in search of him, and finds him locked in the castle dungeon. Belle asks the Beast to let her take Maurice's place, the Beast agrees but Maurice refuses. On the pretence of saying goodbye, Belle asks the Beast to allow her to say goodbye to her father. The Beast opens the gate to the cell, Belle hugs Maurice and surprises him by swapping places and shutting the gate on herself. The Beast drags Maurice away.

Belle befriends the castle's servants, including candelabra/footman Lumiere, mantel clock/majordomo Cogsworth, feather-duster/maid Plumette, teapot/housekeeper Mrs. Potts, and her son, Chip, who is now a teacup. They invite her to a spectacular dinner. When she wanders into the forbidden west wing and finds the rose, the Beast scares her into the woods. Belle is ambushed off-guard by the wolves from earlier, but the Beast rescues her, injuring himself in the process. As Belle nurses his wounds, a spark develops between them. The Beast shows Belle a gift from the enchantress, a book that transports readers wherever they want. Belle uses the book to visit her childhood home in Paris, where she discovers a plague doctor's mask and realizes that she and her father were forced to leave when her mother died from the Bubonic plague, the one thing her father couldn't tell her all those years.

In Villeneuve, Maurice fails to convince the other villagers of the Beast and Belle's imprisonment. Gaston, seeing rescuing Belle as an opportunity to win her hand in marriage, agrees to help Maurice. When Maurice learns of his ulterior motive and rejects him, Gaston abandons him to be eaten by the wolves. Maurice is rescued by the town hermit Agathe, but when he tells the townsfolk of Gaston's crime and is unable to provide solid evidence, Gaston convinces them to send Maurice to an insane asylum.

After sharing a romantic dance with the Beast, Belle discovers her father's predicament using a magic mirror. The Beast releases her to save Maurice, giving her the mirror to remember him with. Arriving back to the town, Belle reveals the Beast in the mirror much to the shock of the townsfolk, proving her father's sanity. Realizing that Belle loves the Beast, a jealous Gaston claims she has been charmed by dark magic and has her thrown into the asylum carriage with her father. He rallies the villagers to follow him to the castle to slay the Beast before he "curses" the whole village. Inside the asylum carriage, Belle tells her father that she already knows what happened to her mother and showed him the rose rattle she took from her magical visit to their old, abandoned home. Maurice and Belle escape, and Belle rushes back to the castle.

During the battle, Gaston abandons his companion LeFou, who then sides with the servants to fend off the villagers. Meanwhile, he attacks the Beast in his tower, who is too depressed to fight back, but regains his spirit upon seeing Belle return. He overwhelms Gaston, but spares his life at the last second before reuniting with Belle. However, Gaston treacherously shoots the Beast from a bridge, which then collapses as the castle begins to crumble, leading Gaston to fall to his death. The Beast then dies just as the last petal falls and the servants become inanimate objects themselves shortly after the ordeal.

As Belle tearfully professes her love to the Beast, Agathe reveals herself as the enchantress and undoes the curse which repairs the crumbling castle, revives the Beast and restores him and his servants to their human forms and to the villagers' memories once again. The movie ends with the Prince and Belle hosting a ball for the kingdom, where they dance happily.

In the Footsteps of Marco Polo

''In The Footsteps of Marco Polo'' begins by discussing how in the 13th century A.D., a book was written "that would change the course of history"—the author was Marco Polo, who wrote about his travels in China, Persia, Tatarstan and India. Denis Belliveau and Francis O'Donnell, of Queens, New York, sought to retrace the entire 25,000 mile route of Marco Polo, eschewing aircraft and "going only by land or sea", even making a pact to return either “dead or successful”. Their main goal was to prove the validity of Marco Polo's account by capturing images of what Polo described in his ''Book of the Marvels of the World'', or also known as, ''The Travels of Marco Polo.''

The pair started out in Venice, Italy and then sailed to Israel, where in Jerusalem they obtained holy oil from Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the site of Jesus' burial, during the Eastern Orthodox Christian celebration of Easter, as Marco Polo had. Belliveau and O'Donnell then sailed to Turkey, landing in Ayaş, a small fishing village, although in Polo's time it was a large port. The duo made appearances in several local newspapers, which opened up doors with the local population. Denis and Francis then tried to enter Iran but were prohibited from doing so by the Iranian government. As a result, they picked up the trail traveled by Marco Polo's father, Niccolo and his uncle Maffeo, to Bukhara, hoping to visit Iran on the way back. The Polo brothers had opened up the land route to China, known as the Silk Road years before Polo.

In Uzbekistan the two were required to have a visa for every city that they visited. Belliveau and O'Donnell, however, initially faced difficulty from the Federal Security Service (the successor of the Soviet KGB) in crossing the Friendship Bridge into Afghanistan, but were able to do so after waiting approximately three weeks, forging their visas and paying a $100 bribe. The two noticed the stark difference between this former Republic of the Soviet Union and Afghanistan—the lack of roads, goods and electricity. To get across Afghanistan, Belliveau and O'Donnell were inspired by a plan implemented by Marco Polo: Kublai Khan had provided Polo and his companions with a golden tablet or ''paiza'' on which was written that they should be given all the "lodging they might need and horses to escort them from one land to another." The American adventurers similarly received a letter from a comrade of an Afghan warlord that enabled them to obtain twenty-five heavily armed bodyguards. While traveling to Balkh, the group was ambushed and held captive by ethnic Hazaras, the direct descendants of a tribe that attacked Polo's caravan. Denis and Francis then made their way to the Wakhan Corridor in far northeastern Afghanistan. The narrow corridor has been described by the two modern explorers as being the jewel in the crown of their achievement. The leader of the Wakhi people, a living remnant of the days of feudal lords, Shah Sayid Muhammad Ishmael, told the travelers that they were the first Westerners to traverse the legendary corridor in a generation. Belliveau and O'Donnell then crossed the Pamirs into Tajikistan on horseback, passing structures made of sheep horns (ovis poli), that guided the sojourners along the snowy trails just as described by Marco Polo and dictated by local custom.

The first city that the duo encountered in China was Kashgar, where they resupplied their caravan for an arduous six week horse and camelback crossing of the Taklamakan Desert. In 1994, when they finally arrived in Dunhuang, a city in the Gansu Province, Belliveau and O’Donnell treated themselves to their first shower and hotel room after months of arduous travel. Marco Polo had written about the Reclining Buddha in Zhangye, which the pair dutifully recorded. When traveling to Mongolia, they lived in “circular houses covered in felt” called ''gers''. They ceremoniously drank fermented mares milk called ''airag'' and partook of other various milk products used in the diet of the nomadic people residing there. The journeyers traveled throughout China visiting close to 200 places described by Polo, including Yunnan and Tibet. Finally, from Hong Kong in August 1994, they sailed on a container ship to Sumatra, where they lived with the Mentawai people and O'Donnell received a tribal tattoo, according to local tradition. They then sailed to Sri Lanka, known as Ceylon to Polo, and then at the beginning of November, they arrived in the Indian city of Madras, where they set off into the Indian subcontinent, documenting all Polo had correctly noted, including the ancient practice of astrology.

They then traveled from India to Iran, called Persia by Polo. Despite the devastating refusal of entry into Iran at the start of their journey the two adventurers were finally granted a one-month visa for entry, and told they were the first Americans to receive this freedom of passage since the 1979 Iranian Revolution. Belliveau and O'Donnell were thankful for the incredible hospitality of the people they met there.

When the duo arrived back in Venice in March 1995 they were sailed down the grand canal in a royal regatta of gondolas, landing them in St Mark's Square, where the church bells of St Mark's Basilica rang in honor of their return. At a celebratory banquet, the Venetian mayor presented them with the keys to the city and the next morning personally walked them into the ''Biblioteca Nazionale'' to view Marco Polo's last will and testament, which they had been denied access to before they left on their epic journey.

Unconditional Surrender (novel)

Guy Crouchback spends 1941–1943 in Britain, mostly at desk jobs. He turns 40 and, with the German invasion of Russia and Britain's subsequent alliance with the Soviet Union, feels the futility of the war. American soldiers are all over London. Virginia has fallen on hard times and is reduced to selling her furs. She had been persuaded to accompany Trimmer, her former hairdresser who was set up as a war hero for media consumption. She becomes pregnant by him and searches futilely for an abortion care provider. Eventually she decides to look for a husband instead. Crouchback is chosen for parachute training prior to being sent into action one last time. The commanding officer at the training center is Ludovic. In the previous volume, ''Officers and Gentlemen'', Ludovic had deserted from his unit in Crete, and in the process murdered two men, one while escaping from the island by boat. Crouchback was also on board, and although he was delirious and barely aware of his surroundings, Ludovic fears exposure if the two meet. Already a misfit as an officer, Ludovic becomes increasingly paranoid and isolated.

Guy is injured during the parachute training, and finds himself stuck in an RAF medical unit, cut off from anyone he knows. He eventually contacts Jumbo Trotter to extract him and returns to live with his Uncle Peregrine. His father having died, and having left him a significant estate, Guy is now able to support himself comfortably. This attracts the attention of Virginia who begins to visit him.

Before Guy goes abroad, he and Virginia are reconciled and remarry (or, in the eyes of the Catholic Church, resume their marriage). Virginia stays in London with his elderly bachelor uncle, Peregrine Crouchback, and has her baby there. Despite being incorrectly suspected of pro-Axis sympathies because of his time in pre-war Italy and his Catholicism, Guy is posted to Yugoslavia where he is appalled by the Partisans, befriends a small group of Jews and finds out that his former friend de Souza's loyalties are with Communism rather than with England. While Guy is overseas, a German doodlebug hits Uncle Peregrine's flat and kills him and Virginia, but spares Virginia and Trimmer's son, Gervase, who is in the country with Guy's sister.

On his late father's advice, Guy attempts individual acts of salvation, but these ultimately make matters worse for the recipients. The Yugoslavian Jews receive gifts from Jewish organisations in the USA, infuriating the locals, although the gifts consist largely of warm clothes and food. Upon returning to England, Guy is told that some of his friends in Yugoslavia have been shot as spies, largely because of their friendship with him.

After the end of the war Guy meets the daughter of another old Roman Catholic family and marries her. In Waugh's first version of the novel's conclusion, Guy and his second wife produce further children who are ironically to be disinherited by Trimmer's son. Waugh altered this ending to an uncompromisingly childless marriage in the revised text, after realising that some readers interpreted such a conclusion as hopeful. "No nippers for Guy," he clarified in a letter to Nancy Mitford. Nonetheless, Waugh died in 1966 and, in the 1974 Penguin reprint, the character has two sons with his wife Domenica Plessington.
