Claire befriends Lisa Trevor, a disfigured girl who has been experimented on by Dr. William Birkin, an employee for the Umbrella Corporation, who oversees the orphanage and takes children for his own experimental research. Claire escapes from Birkin when she is selected to participate in an experiment.

In 1998, Claire returns to Raccoon City, hitchhiking in a semi-truck. The truck driver accidentally hits a woman in the middle of the road. While Claire and the driver are arguing, the woman disappears. The truck driver's Dobermann licks the blood left behind, and over time begins to foam at the mouth and becomes erratic. At a diner, rookie police officer Leon S. Kennedy notices that the diner's owner has blood coming out of her eyes.

Claire heads to Chris's home to warn him about Umbrella's experiments, revealing journalist Ben Bertolucci as her source. After Chris leaves for the police station, a child breaks into the house, running from his mother, who attacks Claire; both are erratic and bloody. Claire escapes from them on Chris's motorcycle.

At the police station, the STARS Alpha team meet with Chief Brian Irons and he explains that Bravo team went missing while investigating a death at the remote Spencer Mansion. The Alpha team, composed of Chris, Jill Valentine, Richard Aiken, Brad Vickers, and Albert Wesker, is sent to the mansion by helicopter to investigate. Unknown to his teammates, Wesker is an operative for an unidentified party, tasked with stealing Birkin's virus, using inside knowledge to navigate the mansion. Inside, Chris and Richard encounter zombies eating the bodies of the Bravo team while Brad gets bitten by a zombie and crashes their helicopter into the mansion trying to fly away. Wesker saves Jill from a zombie before leaving her; Richard is eaten while Chris battles the horde, reuniting with Jill. The pair flee into the secret passage Wesker unlocked.

Meanwhile, the truck driver, bitten by his dog, transforms into a zombie and crashes his truck into the police station. Chief Irons tries to drive out of the city but is fired on by Umbrella guards attempting to contain the outbreak. Returning to the station, Irons is attacked by the truck driver's zombie dog but Claire rescues him. Claire and Leon retrieve weapons and encounter Ben, who is locked in a cell and bitten by a zombie inmate. The station becomes overrun by zombies, and Leon, Claire, and Irons escape to the Orphanage, looking for a secret Umbrella tunnel leading to the mansion. A Licker kills Irons and attacks Leon, but he is saved by Lisa who recognizes Claire and gives them the keys to the secret passage. The pair discovers the secret lab where Umbrella was experimenting on children like the Ashford Twins.

Wesker encounters Dr. Birkin. In the ensuing scuffle, Wesker is shot by Birkin, shoots him back, and then kills Birkin's wife in self-defense. When Wesker hesitates to pull the trigger on their child Sherry, Jill shoots Wesker. Before dying, Wesker tells her to escape via the underground train before the Umbrella Corporation destroys the city, while Birkin injects himself with the "G-Virus". Birkin begins to mutate and attacks Chris, before being shot down by Claire who has arrived at the lab with Leon.

Chris, Sherry, Jill, Claire and Leon escape to the train, but are stopped when Raccoon City and the Spencer Mansion are destroyed, allowing a mutated monster version of Birkin to reach them. It attacks the train and is about to eat Claire when she stabs its face with her knife and gets released. Chris attempts to shoot the monster but runs out of bullets; Leon then destroys it with a rocket launcher. As the Corporation states that there were zero civilian survivors in the aftermath of the destruction, the five survivors walk out of the train tunnel, leaving Raccoon City behind.

Bios (novel)

The novel is set in the 22nd century. After a pandemic-induced social collapse, Earth is controlled by the Trusts, corporate entities dominated by the oligarchic Families. The Trusts function as both business conglomerates and charitable NGOs; having restored order, their power has largely supplanted that of governments, and their managerial cadres (serving the owner-class Families) exercise quasi-feudal authority over their subordinates. In the wider solar system, asteroid settlers that did not experience the pandemics preserve a more liberal mode of existence; they maintain cautious links with the Trusts, cooperating on matters of mutual interest.

Interstellar travel via quantum teleportation is possible, but difficult and hugely expensive; each launch is enormously energy-intensive, consuming a medium-sized ice asteroid. The Trusts and the asteroid dwellers collaborate to send a large scientific expedition to the planet Isis, the only world found so far to possess a complex biota. A significantly older world than Earth, Isis features a rich ecology which is - like Earth's - DNA-based. However, Isian life violently outcompetes terrestrial biology; any exposure to Isian microorganisms causes death within hours. The human research stations on Isis and the expedition's HQ in orbit must be kept sealed and sterile, with elaborate anti-contamination countermeasure. The world is nonetheless deemed worthy of intensive investigation, as understanding an entire evolutionary process parallel to Earth's could provide important biological insights.

As firsthand research on Isis is extremely difficult, an initiative within the Trusts produces a small group of genetically engineered children specially designed to survive its environment, with enhanced immune systems capable of countering the ravenous Isian microbiome. During a Byzantine power struggle among the Trusts' ruling Families, however, the project is deprecated and the children - all girls - callously disposed of to a brutal orphanage, where most of them die. The sole survivor, Zoe Fisher, is rescued when her patron finally prevails in the inter-Trust power struggle, and is sent to the Isis system, where the researchers are having increasing difficulty maintaining their quarantine. The Isian biota seems to be adapting to their containment measures in ways that seems almost purposeful, with the seeming goal of breaching the seals of the human surface stations.

Zoe is dispatched to one of the surface stations, where she meets and befriends a young man from the asteroid-dweller contingent, and begins making unprotected exploratory trips through the Isian ecology. The marine station is eventually lost when its seals are compromised by a heretofore unknown Isian organism. Some evacuees are quarantined aboard the orbital HQ, where they eventually sicken and die as well, after first experiencing strange hallucinations. The orbital station is found to be contaminated with a microscopic agent capable of tunneling through rubber seals. Its population becomes increasingly ill and erratic; the manager in charge destroys the quantum-entanglement transceiver that is the expedition's only means of communication with Earth. On Isis, the microbiota begins degrading equipment, including the drones and robots necessary for external maintenance of the surface stations. Zoe's patron arrives on a quantum transport, and assumes command of the expedition. With evacuation of the surface stations looming, Zoe is sent on a last-ditch effort to investigate the "diggers," a primitive Isian species that is suspected to be near-sentient.

Zoe encounters the diggers, but the poor condition of her escorting drones makes them unable to intervene when the diggers assault and abduct her. The surface station is abandoned; Zoe's asteroid-dweller friend (who has become her lover) stays behind, going on a hopeless mission in a suit of hazmat armor to rescue her. He finds Zoe dying inside the diggers' underground colony; his own suit breached, they wait to die together. In space, the inhabitants of the orbital station quietly die. Its badly-ill and no longer rational manager attempts to launch the expedition's only Earth-return vehicle to evacuate the senior staff, but all of them also die during the shuttle ride out to it. Meanwhile, a feverish Zoe experiences a hallucinatory quantum link with a Gaian super-organism consisting of not only all the life of Isis, but a vast number of worlds throughout the galaxy whose life shares a common origin via panspermia, all of them sharing a connection on a quantum level. This line of descent includes Earth life, which however descends from a genetically damaged branch in which the quantum link has been broken. The emergent intelligence cherishes the sentient life that occasionally evolves on its worlds, and regrets that it cannot communicate with humans or control the virulence of the Isian biome. Zoe, her lover, and - it is implied - all the humans who had died after being infected by Isis are "remembered" by the super-organism, in a sense living forever within the immortal quantum "cloud."

The remaining ground stations fail one by one. Zoe's patron - having been implanted with the same experimental anti-Isian-life countermeasures before leaving Earth - is left alone on the slowly deteriorating orbital station, as the only living human in the Isis system.

In a distant epilogue, a second Earth expedition arrives a century later. It is revealed that the Trusts have fallen, and a more humane regime now rules the Solar System. The new arrivals have advanced synthetic immune systems that make it possible for them to live on Isis without protection.

At ten, Yuliya is dancing in the streets of Shakhtinsk as part of a pickpocket team, and is noticed by Pototskiy, a former star of the Bolshoi, now a deadbeat drunk. He takes Yuliya to the third round of the Bolshoi Ballet Academy audition, asking his former teacher, Galina Beletskaya, to give her a chance. The other ballet mistress, Lyudmila Untilova, is put off by Yuliya's brashness, but Galina appreciates her cheek and charisma, and she is admitted. At the Bolshoi Academy, Yuliya rooms with Karina. They become the star students - with their classmates betting avidly when the two do a fouetté competition - but Karina has the advantage of rich, protective parents. Galina secretly employs Yuliya to clean her apartment, and it is revealed that Galina suffers from memory loss. She tells Yuliya that she has a brilliant future and makes her a present of a pair of sapphire earrings that she herself wore as a ballerina, telling her that she should wear them when she performs the role of Odette on the Bolshoi stage someday. However, Galina later forgets her gift, and Yuliya, accused of stealing the earrings, is nearly expelled. For their graduating performance, Yuliya and Karina vie for the role of Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty. Lyudmila favors Karina, but Galina insists on Yuliya. During vacation, Yuliya returns home for the first time since joining the school, and finds her mother and brothers living hand-to-mouth. Karina's mother had offered Yuliya a bribe to step down from the role of Aurora, and on the day of the performance, Yuliya decides to take the bribe and send the money home. Karina stars in the performance, and goes on to a meteoric career at the Bolshoi, becoming an "international ballerina" while Yuliya stagnates in the corps de ballet.
Star French dancer Antoine Duval comes to the Bolshoi to stage Swan Lake for his own retirement performance with Karina as the female lead. He reveals his insecurities to Yuliya during an impromptu drinking session, and needles her own disappointed hopes and belief that she is a failure. After an energetic company class in which she matches Karina fouetté for fouetté, Duval casts her as the substitute lead. Karina turns against Yuliya, who then reveals that Karina's mother bought her the role of Aurora. Perturbed, Karina calls in sick, and Yuliya must perform the lead in Swan Lake. During the Battle of Bryansk, Kalashnikov is seriously wounded while taking out a German anti-tank gun, and he is taken off the frontlines. While being transported to the rear, he and a companion encounter a group of German soldiers, and he witnesses his comrade's new submachine gun jam at a critical moment due to design faults in the magazine. This inspires him to use his self-acquired talent at inventing to design a new automatic weapon for the Soviet army.

On his way home, Kalashnikov visits Matai Station in Kazakhstan, where he previously worked as an engineer but was dismissed for using the depot's workshop to build his private weapon designs. He appeals to his former superior, Krotov, to let him assemble his latest invention, but Krotov refuses. When Kalashnikov proposes his design to a passing high-ranking officer named Basarov, he gets authorization to proceed, and with the help of the Station's workers he successfully assembles his new submachine gun. While trying to bring it to Basarov, he is mistakenly arrested, but Basarov takes notice of the gun's innovative design and has it sent off for evaluation. As a result, Kalashnikov is released and encouraged to present his gun to General Pavel Kurbatkin, the district commander of Central Asia, who approves him for a national arms design competition.

Kalashnikov is sent to Golutvin, the Shchurov arms testing facility, where he is to compete against prestigious arms designers like Alexey Sudayev and Sergei Korovin; there he also meets Ekaterina Moiseeva, a female design assistant and his future wife. While his weapon ultimately loses to Sudayev's gun, he is given permission to work on new designs, and his friends also encourage him to continue his work. By the time the war comes to an end, Kalashnikov has a new automatic rifle ready and is sent to the Kovrov Arms Factory to improve on it. Impatient to see if it works, and denied a test at the firing range, he conducts his own successful trial, upon which he is arrested for testing his gun in the open without authorization and brought to General Vasily Degtyaryov, a notable arms designer whom Kalashnikov considers his fiercest competitor. However, Degtyaryov, expressing his sincere respect for Kalashnikov's talent and the superiority of his design, removes himself from the competition, and tested under extreme conditions (after being immersed in water and sand), the new rifle passes. In 1949, after the first major field testing, the new weapon is approved for mass production. Kalashnikov is decorated and given an extended leave of absence, which he uses to visit his mother at his home farm along with his wife and children.

Finale (Modern Family)

Part One

With Haley (Sarah Hyland), Dylan (Reid Ewing) and the twins still living at the Dunphys’, Alex (Ariel Winter) having moved back in after quitting her job, and Luke (Nolan Gould) still there after not going to college, the house is overstuffed. Claire (Julie Bowen) and Phil (Ty Burrell), uneasy with the number of people now living in the Dunphy household, have moved into Phil's recently deceased father Frank's (Fred Willard) RV parked in the driveway. After they are caught out, they host an intervention with Haley, Alex, Luke and Dylan, stating that someone needs to move out as the house is too crowded. The kids are offended, but even as Luke pleads to Phil's emotional side using their close friendship as a pawn, Claire asserts their position. They tell them they have 24 hours to decide, and leave for Mitch and Cam's housewarming party.

Mitch (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cam (Eric Stonestreet), now settled into their new house with their new baby Rexford, are hosting a housewarming party. Ronaldo (Christian Barillas) arrives to set up, but as Mitch shows him around, Cam receives a call, informing him that the coaching job he was rejected for in Missouri is now open again, giving him a dilemma. He tells Ronaldo that he is not taking it, as Mitch is too happy in their new house, and says he will keep it to himself. However, Ronaldo spills the secret and Mitch finds out. Mitch firstly reacts positively in front of everyone, but then he walks away and swears to Claire about the situation.

Gloria (Sofía Vergara) is preparing to say goodbye to Manny (Rico Rodriguez) as he is leaving to travel the world, and she and Joe (Jeremy Maguire) go to Colombia for the summer. Jay (Ed O’Neill) has bought a hideous housewarming gift for Mitch and Cam and organized Joe's haircut, leaving Gloria feeling left out and not needed. As Manny prepares to leave, she feels she is not the go-to person in the house that she once was now that she works as a realtor. As they arrive at Mitch and Cam's party, she says she hates the gift and misses Joe's old hair.

Phil and Claire return from the party emotional that Mitchell will probably be leaving for Missouri and decide they no longer want to sleep in the RV. They agree that they love their crazy household and will tell the kids they can stay. However, when they enter the house, Haley and Dylan inform them they have found a place to live, which is cheap because they know the owner. Next, Alex, who earlier met with her new co-worker Arvin (Chris Geere) and shared a kiss, tells them that they are moving to Switzerland together for work. Then, Luke arrives, telling Phil and Claire that he has been accepted to the University of Oregon and will also be moving out. Upset at this news, Claire emotionally says ‘I'm going to miss this’ to Phil, to which he replies, ‘Me too’.

Later, in the karaoke room, Cam apologizes and Mitch says that he will leave for Missouri, and they inform Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) before singing a duet of "Endless Love" by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie.

Gloria confesses to Jay that she feels guilty about working and like she is no longer needed, to which Jay tells her she should not because he never did, and that she will always be needed by him, Joe and Manny. She is comforted by this.

The next day, the family gather to send Mitchell and Cam off, with Jay saying he is upset as ‘both [his] sons are leaving’. As the family hug goodbye, they are informed that Mitch and Cam's flight is delayed. Dylan then arrives at the door. He is excited because he thinks the family remembered his birthday. Unenthusiastically, the family says "Surprise!"

Part Two

As Mitch and Cam's flight is delayed further, the family agree to meet later to say a proper goodbye. During this waiting period, Mitchell and Claire retrieve their old skating trophy and share a sibling moment, dancing to ''Hungry Like the Wolf'', their skating song. Also, Phil misunderstands Jay as Jay attempts to learn Spanish, and as Jay asks for a spoon, Phil attempts to spoon him and they share one last embarrassing moment. Gloria and Cam share an emotional goodbye as he recites a poem to her, which she is not as upset by as he expected. Alex and Haley play one final prank on Luke, then share a heartwarming moment where they agree to always be there for each other as siblings. Joe humorously prepares Manny for his travels. Jay informs Gloria he is coming with her to Colombia and is learning Spanish. Luke and Manny share a final cousin/uncle love moment. Claire and Phil get emotional about the kids leaving and Phil tells her that they have to ‘leave the porch light on’ to ensure that they will always come back. They agree they will go on an RV road trip now that the kids have gone.

The family gather to finally say goodbye. They take a group selfie, hug, and then cannot let go. Phil tries to set an example and be the first to pull away, but immediately rushes back, claiming ‘It was awful’. The family cries as Haley explains how it is Mitch and Cam now, but eventually everyone will be separated. Jay says it is hard to say goodbye as ‘not everyone gets to have what [they] have’.

As Jay's speech plays over the end of the episode, it is shown that Haley and Dylan have moved into Mitch and Cam's old apartment. A montage is then played of mirrored images and references to the first episode, with Mitch and Cam on the plane eating cream puffs with their kids, Phil and Claire working on the calendar for their RV trip like they did to ‘shoot Luke’ in the pilot, and Jay and Gloria watching Joe play football like they did Manny, but this time neither of them can get out of their chairs to stand up. As Jay's speech ends the episode, saying that the comfort of your family is important and that ‘that's what helps [him] sleep at night’, the lights turn off in each respective house, but at the Dunphys’, the porch light is left on, signifying the family will always return.

In the ending credits, emotional music is heard as the camera pans through various photos of the 3 different families over the years. In the final shot, the camera focuses on the family portrait from the season one finale of all three families laughing together.

CasualtyXHolby

Part 1

In the Holby City Hospital resus department, the monitors begin showing patients going into ventricular fibrillation, confusing Jade Lovall (Gabriella Leon), Dylan Keogh (William Beck) and Charlie Fairhead (Derek Thompson), who find the patients are all stable. The computers are also affected, preventing the staff from accessing patient records. Elle Gardner (Jaye Griffiths) calls Ric Griffin (Hugh Quarshie) on AAU, who tells her they also have problems with the computers. Ric, Connie Beauchamp (Amanda Mealing), Jac Naylor (Rosie Marcel), Adrian "Fletch" Fletcher (Alex Walkinshaw) and Serena Campbell (Catherine Russell) are summoned to a board meeting with CEO Henrik Hanssen (Guy Henry), who tells them that the network has been infected with a virus, caused by a member of staff opening a spam email. Connie, Jac and Serena then inform the rest of the staff that they will have to take manual observations.

Paramedic Ruby Spark (Maddy Hill) becomes suspicious about her colleague Iain Dean (Michael Stevenson), after finding his uniform in his locker, but no other personal effects. Ruby goes to Iain's home, where she finds him unresponsive and brings him to the ED. Meanwhile, Sacha Levy (Bob Barrett) meets Ric's granddaughter Darla Johnstone (Naomi Katiyo) in a pharmacy and offers her a ride to school, before he and his daughter Beka (Francessa Barrett) go shopping. Sacha and Beka argue when a pregnancy test falls out of her bag, causing him to lose focus and crash. Sacha and Darla free themselves, but Beka is trapped. Elle is sent to the scene and she reduces Beka's dislocated shoulder. Ruby tells Connie that she believes Iain tried to end his life, which his sister Gemma Dean (Rebecca Ryan) refuses to believe.

Connie initially treats Iain's symptoms as a heart attack, leading Ruby to return to Iain's house, where she finds three empty pill bottles in his neighbour's bin. Connie accepts them as evidence of an overdose. She and Hanssen later discuss moving patients to other hospitals when the fire alarm goes off. Dylan takes Beka to AAU with Marty Kirkby (Shaheen Jafargholi), where they reduce her open femur fracture. Elle takes Darla to Serena's office and comforts her when she blames herself for the crash. After discovering that Iain has a pericardial effusion, Connie attempts to take him to the trauma theatre, however, upon finding the locks are compromised, Connie calls Jac to ask if the theatre on Darwin is free. She and David Hide (Jason Durr) meet Fletch in the lift, which comes to a sudden stop. The lights then go out throughout the hospital, prompting the emergency lighting system to activate.

Part 2

Hanssen informs the staff of AAU that the hospital will be evacuated. On ITU, Dominic Copeland (David Ames) tells Ange Godard (Dawn Steele) that Serena is on her way up to discuss moving Ange's patient, Holly Cartwright (Emma Curtis). In the lift, Connie realises that Iain is running out of oxygen and his sats are falling. David tells her that Gem had the Ambu bag, so Connie takes Iain off the ventilator and breathes for him. Jac charges Zosia March (Camilla Arfwedson) with coordinating Darwin's patient evacuation and goes to find Connie. Sacha tells Ric about the crash and why it happened. They argue about their families and Jac intervenes. Sacha accuses Jac of taking sides and he collapses in the locker room as she leaves. Gem, Marty, and Rash Masum (Neet Mohan) open the lift doors and get everyone out. Elsewhere, Beka and Essie Harrison (Kaye Wragg) are trapped in a radiology scanner room, while Elle and Darla learn that Darla is pregnant. Hanssen tries to get Iain moved to a nearby hospital, but Jac and Connie convince him that surgery will be quick.

Ric finds Sacha and Jac diagnoses an aortic transection. She takes him to the theatre, where she argues with Connie about who should take priority. Jac states that she should decide as she is lead consultant for cardiothoracics, however, Connie counters that she is lead consultant for the ED. Jac points out that she has not been a surgeon for nine years. Jac starts Sacha's surgery in the theatre, and Connie operates on Iain in the anaesthetic bay. Serena struggles to get Holly into another hospital, but eventually finds one in Aberdeen. In radiology, Essie discovers some of Beka's stitches have come out, but she collapses due to hypoglycemia. Xavier "Zav" Duval (Marcus Griffiths) and Donna Jackson (Jaye Jacobs) assist Jac, while Connie discovers Iain has a torn vessel and needs to open him up. Receptionist Noel Garcia (Tony Marshall) finds Beka and Essie in radiology. Darla tells Ric that she is pregnant and he reacts badly. Elle calms him down and they discuss their recent one-night stand.

Zav's stitches are not holding, so Jac convinces Connie to help by telling her she is the best CT surgeon Holby ever had. Ric crawls through the ventilation duct to get into the scanner room, where he gives Essie glucose. Iain goes into VF as Zav finds a tear in the right ventricle. He struggles and Jac takes over, saving Iain. Connie finishes up just at the bypass battery runs out. Connie calls Jac a terrible person, and says that she was Holby's greatest CT surgeon, but now Jac is. The power returns to the hospital and Noel hands his notice in to Hanssen, believing himself to be at fault for opening a spam email saying he had been nominated for an award. Hanssen reveals the virus originated at St James' and migrated to the Holby network, and that the email was genuine, as he himself nominated Noel for his years of service to the hospital. Fletch signs Essie off sick for a week. Serena tells Ric to be there for Darla. Gem sits with Iain, and Beka visits Sacha. As Hanssen and Serena leave the hospital, Hanssen refers to the state of things as Tuesday.

Time to Hunt (film)

In dystopian South Korea, Jun-seok gets released from prison, due to a botched heist he and his friends pulled and which resulted in his incarceration. The South Korean won has crashed massively, making that haul effectively worthless. Jun-seok proposes one last heist to his best friends Jang-ho and Ki-hoon, to escape their miserable situations.

Their target is an illegal gambling house, which stores hefty stacks of US dollars. The trio recruits Sang-soo, an employee working there. After getting firearms from Bong-sik – Jun-seok's contact – the quartet proceeds with the heist. Despite the messy proceedings, the heist is ultimately successful. They take a large sum of cash and the gambling house's surveillance hard drives. After Sang-soo chooses to continue working for a while to avoid raising suspicions, the remaining three leaves to go to Ki-hoon's parents' home.

Unbeknownst to the group, the hard drives contain footage of shady dealings between the gambling house's owners and various criminals. The gambling house owner hire police officer-turned-contract killer Han to retrieve the drives. Han visits Bong-sik, forces him to call Jun-seok to reveal the trio's current location, and kills him. Han kills Sang-soo off-screen and takes his phone. Jun-seok wakes up from a nightmare and goes to a bar. He receives several calls from Sang-soo's phone. Realising that someone else has the phone, he meets up with Jang-ho and Ki-hoon and urges them to flee.

As the trio leaves the parking lot, Han shoots Jang-ho, causing their car to crash. Han gives them a 5-minute headstart to prolong the hunt. They drive to the hospital in another city to treat Jang-ho's injury. Using the city's surveillance system, Han finds the hospital. Jun-seok sees him coming. The trio evades Han and escapes in his car, in the process realizing him to be a police officer. They attempt to make a deal with him, but he refuses. Han is arrested by the police, but they release him under the police chief's orders.

The trio arrives at the harbor, where they have to stay until dawn. Suspecting that his parents are in trouble, Ki-hoon returns to his parents' home. Jun-seok returns at dusk, sees an unknown car near the entrance, and realises that Han has arrived. Jun-seok and Jang-ho escape from Han and run to a nearby car, but Han shoots at them before Jang-ho can start the car. Jun-seok says fighting Han is their only chance to escape.

In the ensuing gunfight, Han shoots Jang-ho multiple times, and the latter eventually succumbs to his injuries and dies. As Jun-seok is about to be killed by Han, a group of masked men, led by Bong-sik's twin brother Bong-soo, arrives to kill Han to avenge his brother's death. The masked men shoot Han numerous times, and he falls into the sea.

At dawn, Jun-seok takes the boat to Kenting, Taiwan, where he stays for some time, but he still cannot get over the loss of his friends. He asks for information regarding everyone associated with the gambling house and learns that Han has survived. It is also revealed that Ki-hoon died after returning home. Jun-seok, now better at gunfiring, knows that he will never escape from Han and returns to South Korea to face him and finish him off.

A man chops firewood in the winter and leaves the wood in the snow. One of the split pieces has a woman's face. As the snow melts, the wood pieces begin to dance. Water flows and plants sprout around them. A raven attacks and eats the piece with a woman's face. The raven's body turns into a piece of wood with a distorted carved face. Plants die and the snow returns. The raven flies into a cave and goes to sleep. The sun rises and shines into the cave. Killashandra (novel)

Killashandra Ree is in debt to the Heptite Guild and desperate to make enough money to escape Ballybran before the seasonal sonic storms. The Guildmaster offers her an opportunity to travel to the music-loving planet of Optheria to install a set of Crystals on their damaged Crystal-powered organ in time for their upcoming Music Festival, an easy task that will allow Killashandra to clear her debt and escape the storms. She is also to gather information on Optheria, a 'peacful' planet alleged to be so perfect that none of its citizens ever desire to travel elsewhere. Shortly Killashandra discovers the organ was deliberately sabotaged, and begins to suspect that Optherian officials are concealing the full truth about both the organ and the happiness of its citizens.

Attacked on arrival, later Killashandra is kidnapped before she can even begin to investigate, regaining consciousness to find herself marooned alone on a small tropical island. After weeks of fending for herself she decides to swim the open sea from one island to another to reach civilization, and finally lands on a large, populated one. There she comes face to face with her kidnapper Lars Dahl, a former music student on the mainland and conspirator, but her weeks of exposure have so altered Killashandra's appearance that Lars does not recognize her; she gains his confidence and learns he is part of a rebel conspiracy, and why. Killashandra confirms that Optherian leadership effectively prevent unhappy citizens from leaving the planet, in violation of Federation law, and that they use the Crystal organs to transmit highly illegal subliminal hallucinations, brainwashing the population at the seasonal Music Festivals in order to keep them compliant. The conspirators, who are less influenced by subliminals, made a plan to destroy the organ, then kidnap the Crystal Singer sent to repair it to create an interplanetary incident that would demand a full Federation investigation.

By this time Killashandra and Lars have fallen in love, presenting an emotional crisis for Killashandra as she cannot survive on Optheria and Lars cannot follow her to Ballybran. Killashandra reveals herself and volunteers to further the conspirators' plans by having Lars return her to the mainland and present himself as her rescuer. She will locate and sabotage the organ's hidden subliminal projector under the guise of repairing the organ, then report the human rights violations to the Federation. The plan succeeds and the subliminals are disabled, but Lars is now under suspicion of the government. To protect him from reprisal, Killashandra and a fellow Singer smuggle him off the planet under the guise of arresting him for Killashandra's kidnapping.

At an automated trial, Killashandra speaks in Lars' defense, but when stress monitors misread her concern for him as fear, the computerized judge believes he has threatened her and finds him guilty. Killashandra returns to Ballybran despondent, certain she will never see Lars again. Meanwhile, the Federation has collected enough evidence to justify taking over Optheria and arresting its leadership, and Lars receives a retrial when it is learned that he and Killashandra were married by island custom. He applies to the Heptite Guild to become a Singer. His transition succeeds and the lovers reunite.

His plan fails, and the press club goes to deliver the protest to the captain. Mikami physically blocks their way, and they subsequently declare their intention to boycott the commissioner’s visit. Mikami visits Criminal Investigations and unexpectedly finds out about a gag order, which makes him suspicious.

Mikami then visits multiple different people he knew from his time in Criminal Investigations to find out about the Six Four case. He visits the home of Hiyoshi, a former forensics worker who worked on Six Four, and talks with his mother, who reveals how disastrous Hiyoshi’s life has become after the failed case. Mikami leaves a note for Hiyoshi before leaving to visit another officer, Kakinuma. Kakinuma tells Mikami about the Koda Memo, an account of a call by the kidnapper during the Six Four case that was covered up because the police messed up the recording. Mikami visits Amamiya again and convinces him to accept the commissioner's visit. Mikami then receives a call from Suwa informing him that the press situation is worsening. Mikami receives a call from an officer named Urushibara asking what he did to the former police detective Koda, who is now missing. At the end of the call, Urushibara tells Mikami to see Arakida in the police HQ.

Mikami learns from Arakida that the true purpose of the commissioner’s visit is for the National Police Agency to absorb the job of Director of Criminal Investigations in the police HQ. Mikami visits a higher-up named Captain Tsujiuchi and tries to argue for the retention of the role with Criminal Investigations, but Tsujiuchi dismisses him.

The next day, Mikami tells his co-workers that he plans on removing the anonymous reporting of crimes. He agrees to tell the press everything about the vehicular manslaughter case, but stress the importance of anonymity in special cases. After Mikami finishes his announcement, he asks the press to cover the visit with Amamiya. The press club eventually agrees.

Mikami is told that there has been another kidnapping. As part of the administrative affairs department, he is responsible for informing the press of the case, which is strikingly similar to the Six Four case. Mikami then goes to station G to ask Matsuoka for details. Matsuoka gives Mikami the name of the father of the victim, Mesaki, and his store address, but nothing else. Mikami asks to join the police in the mobile command center that will monitor Mesaki as he delivers the ransom money to the kidnapper and is granted permission. In the middle of the observation, an officer reports that the missing girl, Kasumi, was found in police custody in Genbu city for shoplifting. After a short while, Matsuoka reveals to Mikami that this kidnapping was actually an extension of the Six-Four investigation. As Mesaki arrives at the Ai’ai Hair Salon to pay the ransom, the kidnapper speaks to him on the phone. Mikami recognizes the voice of the "kidnapper" on the phone as Koda. Koda instructs Mesaki to put all of the money into an oil drum and burn it, then to read a note from Amamiya. Mesaki's wife calls to tell him his daughter wasn’t kidnapped and was actually at the police station. Mesaki tears and eats the top half of the note before anyone can read it. Mikami then realizes this was a set-up to oust Mesaki as the kidnapper in the original Six-Four case.

The next week, Media Relations and the press debate about the decision to keep the suspected Six Four kidnapper Mesaki's home address anonymous.

The novel ends with Mikami asking Futawatari to let him stay in Media Relations in the spring rather than moving him to Criminal Investigations.

On the Wasteland

When Betony first arrives at Brackenbury Children's Home, the other children sense her independent ways and see the rings in her ears, and assign her the name of 'Gypsy.' Not used to being around kids her own age, and feeling very vulnerable after so much loss, she establishes a loner self among her classmates. On her own she explores the 'Wasteland', nearby salt marshes fed by the North Sea. In her internal world she is open and listening, and one day while she's digging around she digs much deeper than usual as if possessed, and discovers an immovable object made of wood. Her shovel breaks off a part of that object, which she carries with her from that point on.

Carrying the wooden splint with her, she first begins to see the Viking ship itself, back when the North Sea came farther inland as a wide river and the pool was an actual port. She slips into the experience of being lashed to the deck for safety as a child when her Danish Viking raider family came over to East Anglia. The ship and its inhabitants become her internal fascination, and she wills herself to go deeper into the feeling of those lives. She finds books on the area's history and sees ships just like that of her vision, during the period when the Vikings raiders became traders and neighbours to the Saxon residents.

One day as she holds the wooden splint in her hand, she feels reality around her transform with sound vibration. She can hear the bustle of a busy camp momentarily, and then it fades away. From that point she continues to seek out and have intensifying experiences first with sound only including battle scenes with cries of 'The Norsemen' from the inland Saxon communities. As the time slip experiences continue she not only can see what is happening, but she experiences events physically, and can also understand their foreign language perfectly. She slips in to the life of Estrith, her ancestor, as she is betrothed to Edmund in the name of peace between the peoples.

Simultaneous with those intense time slip experiences, Betony gets to know the people living nearby. She befriends Yetty and Nott, who live in a boathouse and is beside herself when their home is set on fire while Nott is away ill (and Yetty with him). She goes to Yetty's employer, Carrie Thorpe, to inquire about seeing Yetty, and they become acquainted. When Yetty moves to the manor to stay on and help Mrs. Thorpe, Betony becomes a frequent visitor (and later, employee). She succeeds in her studies and meets Lionel.

After witnessing a life-changing event for Estrith, Betony feels compelled to rush into the flowing river and nearly drowns back in the present time. She is pulled out by Orlando, speaking at first in a language she can't understand until she returns to the present day. She closes the door to the past by throwing that piece of wood in the fire, and turns instead to her actual present-day life. When Linney returns home next, they move towards a serious relationship. Linney has invited an archaeologist to the area, and they try and find the buried ship, but are not able to - nor anything else from those early settlements. Despite the disappointment, Betony decides to study history, specialise in the Saxon-Viking period, and to make teaching about that period her life's work.

Chapter Fifty-Eight: In Memoriam

As the town of Riverdale prepares to hold its first Independence Day parade since the death of Jason Blossom three years prior, Jason's sister Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) attempts to cancel the festivities. Meanwhile, Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) receives a phone call that his father Fred was killed in a hit and run in the nearby town of Cherry Creek. Archie's girlfriend Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) offers to cover the funeral costs, but the funeral director informs him that the body cannot be transported to Riverdale until after the parade. After suffering a nightmare, Archie asks Veronica, Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), and Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) to drive with him to Cherry Creek and retrieve the body themselves.

The funeral director informs Archie that he cannot release the body without adult permission, which they receive from Archie's mother (Molly Ringwald). Afraid of facing the reality of his father's death, he asks Betty and Veronica to identify the body and Jughead to write the obituary. Later that day, the group goes to retrieve Fred's truck at the site of his death, and they find a woman (Shannen Doherty) on the side of the road. She explains that Fred had stopped to help her when her car broke down, and that he had pushed her out of the way of the speeding car that had killed him. The group prays together and leaves flowers on the roadside.

Archie becomes angry, both at his father for sacrificing himself, and at himself for not being there. Sheriff FP Jones (Skeet Ulrich) calls Archie and informs him that the driver who killed his father, a Cherry Creek resident named George Augustine, was released on bail. Archie finds Augustine's address and threatens him. George's son Jeffrey appears and reveals that he had been the hit and run driver, and that his father had taken the blame because Jeffrey did not have a driver's license. Archie forgives them, realizing that his father would have done the same for him, and Veronica assures Archie that Fred would be proud of him.

As the group drives back to Riverdale, with Archie and Veronica in the hearse and Betty and Jughead in Fred's truck, they find that the Independence Day parade has been transformed into a celebration of Fred. At the funeral, Archie delivers a speech where he remembers lighting fireworks with his father in their backyard. The night concludes with Archie and his friends recreating the backyard fireworks mentioned in Fred's eulogy.

Death Is Hard Work

During the civil war in Syria, a rebel leader by the name of Abdel Latif al-Salim lay dying in a Damascene hospital. Abdel reveals his dying wish to be buried beside his sister Layla in his hometown of Anabiya to his son Bolbol, who steps up and pledges to honor his father's wishes, regardless of the troubles that he may encounter along the way. Bolbol then tells the news of their father's death to his sister, Fatima, and brother, Hussein, who both agree to help Bolbol accomplish his father's wish.

Bolbol sets out with his siblings to cross Syria with Abdel's corpse in tow. This journey proves to be more complex than originally thought; with the addition of military checkpoints every few miles, a few hours journey is turned into a days-long odyssey.

At the first of many military checkpoints, the guards recognize Abdel's corpse, and set out to have his dead body arrested for crimes against the regime. After much discussion with many guards, Bolbol manages to bribe the authorities to permit the body's free passage, allowing the group to continue their voyage. As similar events continue to occur with each passing checkpoint, Bolbol contemplates how easy this journey would be if only they were transporting sacks of cumin rather than a dead body. This leads Bolbol to reminiscence on his past, recalling particular details of his youth, such as the neighborhood he grew up in, and the practical effects of being raised during wartime.

After calling in a favor, the group stops at Bolbol's childhood friend, Lamia's (whom he was passionately in love and wrote poetry to, but could not marry) house after dropping Abdel's body off in the local morgue for the night. Over the course of their stay, Lamia and her husband, Zuhayr, offer to help the group pass the next few checkpoints with relative ease, due to Zuhayr's family connections to the regime. It is also revealed that Lamia continues to be an object of Bolbol's obsession. Bolbol spends the night longing for the old days, when he was in love with Lamia. This leads directly into Bolbol recounting an old story regarding the relationship between Abdel and his second wife, Navine, particularly from when they met, to when they got married after the death of Adbel's first wife and mother to his children.

With the corpse rapidly decaying, the guards at each checkpoint begin to provide leniency to the group more readily, allowing them swifter passage just to be rid of the sight. After the group passes a man's half-eaten corpse, an argument breaks out between Bolbol and Hussein about how easy it would be to simply leave their father's corpse there to be eaten by wolves, and no one would be the wiser. This leads Bolbol to provide backstory on Hussein, explaining his tendencies to overreact and lash out at loved ones, and his long history of causing trouble with family. Meanwhile, the corpse's decay has gotten to the point where the scent can no longer be masked with cologne.

After stopping for the night in their van, the group is attacked by wild dogs after the scent of the corpse, leaving the siblings panicked and increasingly on-edge. At the peak of this panic, Hussein picks a fight with Bolbol, who goes down quite easily with a few punches. The stress of their journey has begun to break the siblings, as they all resolve to sob in silence for the night.

After passing through several more checkpoints, the group is stopped by an extremist group, who end up withholding passage from Bolbol until he completes a "religious reeducation course." Left with no other choice, Hussein and Fatima, who has been struck mute, continue on without Bolbol, even more determined to reach Anabiya now that the corpse shows signs of maggot infestation. The two siblings reach Anabiya before sundown, and meet with a cousin and uncle of theirs: the only surviving relatives in the village. Plans are made to bury the body at morning prayer. Bolbol arrives at the village and rejoins his siblings, having been turned over to his uncle by the extremist group. That night, each sibling reflects on how little they desire to see each other after the burial.

After the burial, Bolbol resolves to be addressed only by his original name, Nabil. Fatima has gone permanently mute from the shock of the journey. Hussein quite uncharacteristically keeps to himself. The siblings begin their journey home, and each show a large degree of relief as they pass through the checkpoints with ease, now that they are not in possession of their father's corpse. Hussein and Fatima drop Bolbol off at his neighborhood in Damascus, and leave without exchanging words. Bolbol contemplates how his house smells of his father's corpse, and how he wants his face to melt under the hot water like his father's corpse had melted away in rot.

The Dream Merchants (miniseries)

Part 1

Albany, 1912. Johnny Edge (Mark Harmon) offers his final nickel to watch a moving picture in the nickelodeon theater run by 47-year-old Peter Kessler (Vincent Gardenia). Peter is contractually obligated to show pictures made by The Combine, currently the leading film production company in New York state. Peter believes in the potential of moving pictures but agrees that the productions by The Combine are a cheap novelty, and continuously breaks contract to show the pictures he prefers. Johnny shares Peter’s passion for the film industry and lands a job at his theatre selling candy. Soon, Peter’s profit doubles and he agrees to Johnny’s plan to make their own pictures. They visit New York City and meet with The Combine’s studio boss Charles Slade (Howard Duff). Here, they learn that making pictures requires an expensive license, which prompts them to sell the nickelodeon theater to associate George Pappas (José Ferrer). Meanwhile, at the lot Johnny meets and falls in love with Dulcie Warren (Morgan Fairchild), a film extra with ambitions of becoming a film star.

With the money earned from selling the nickelodeon theater, Peter acquires the license and establishes his own film production company, Magnum Studio, granting Johnny 10% of the shares. They steadily produce two-reel pictures, and although satisfied with their results, have high hopes of producing a six-reel feature. Slade considers six reels too long and does not grant them permission. Enraged, Peter and Johnny move to California to produce films freely without the intervention of The Combine. They are accompanied by Dulcie, film director Conrad Stillman (Fernando Lamas), as well as Dulcie’s cousin Craig Warren (Robert Goulet) and his co-star Astrid James (Morgan Brittany). Also joining are Peter’s family, consisting of his loyal wife Esther (Kaye Ballard), his rebellious son Mark (Robert Picardo) who dreamt of becoming a car engineer but is pressured into film directing by his father, and the young Doris (Brianne Leary), who is secretly in love with Johnny. While producing their first feature film in California, Craig, the male lead and a Broadway star, makes impossible requests. Fed up with his behaviour, Peter replaces him with a Californian cowboy Zack Larsen (Chris Robinson). The film becomes a smash hit and puts Magnum Studio on the map, yet Slade vows revenge on Peter for going behind his back producing the film. Johnny, meanwhile, develops a serious relationship with Dulcie and proposes marriage.

By 1917 in Hollywood, Magnum Studio is producing one feature film after the other, and Dulcie’s career is taking off. When she finds out that she is expecting a child, she fears that the pregnancy will end her career and undergoes an abortion without informing Johnny. He is enraged after finding this out and leaves her. Devastated, he enlists the Great War. Two years later, he returns to Hollywood and finds out that Magnum Studio is now co-run by Henry Farnum (Robert Culp), a former associate of Slade with a commercial mindset. Johnny is not a fan of Farnum and blames Peter for selling out. Before long, Johnny falls in love with a now mature Doris, and they marry. This upsets Dulcie, who expected Johnny to eventually take her back. In spite, she agrees to marry Mark, who always hated Johnny and developed a strong sense of rivalry with him. Peter is furious when he finds out about Mark and Dulcie’s marriage: he rejects Mark as his son and fires Dulcie from the studio. As Johnny goes off on his honeymoon with Doris, Dulcie vows revenge on Johnny.

Part 2

Hollywood, 1926. Talking pictures are the latest fad in Hollywood, but Peter is not interested in making the transition. Instead, he spends most of the studio’s budget on the silent film ''The Flapper'', which stars Astrid and is directed by Stillman who secretly has an affair during production. When Stillman’s wife Helene (Dorit Stevens) finds out, she shoots and kills both of them. Johnny refuses to cancel the project and, to everyone’s surprise, recasts the lead role with Dulcie, who in previous years has been working as an actress in Paris. Meanwhile, Peter keeps spending recklessly on lavish silent productions, which upsets most of the executives at the studio. Farnum informs his former boss Slade about Magnum Studio’s vulnerability, and they design a scheme to overthrow Peter. Slade and Farnum attempt to involve Johnny in the scheme, offering him the presidency. Rather than taking the offer, Johnny uses it as a threat against Peter to stop his reckless spending. The pressure at work puts a strain on his marriage with Doris, and before long Johnny begins an affair with Dulcie.

One day, Johnny and Doris’ son Bobby (Seth Wagerman) falls from a horse and fractures his skull. The event prompts Johnny to reconsider his life choices, following which he ends his affair with Dulcie, who vows revenge. The next morning, Peter receives candid photos of Johnny and Dulcie kissing. Feeling betrayed, he blacklists Johnny and threatens to end Dulcie’s career unless she keeps quiet about the affair and temporarily quits working to give Mark a child. Dulcie refuses to live this lifestyle and tells Mark that she will leave him to move back to Paris. They get into a fight over her choice and get into a car accident, killing both of them. Johnny, meanwhile, confesses the affair to Doris. She feels betrayed, especially considering that she had plenty of opportunities to start an affair with her admirer Zack but rejected him out of loyalty to her husband. Before long, Doris leaves Johnny.

Slade and Farnum’s scheme to take over Magnum Studio continues, with help from Lawrence Bradford (Ray Milland), an investor who gets hold of Peter’s shares of the company in his bid to finance five more silent films. They vote Pappas out of the company, who just spent his final share of the studio on rewiring cinemas for talking pictures. Devastated, Pappas commits suicide in Farnum’s office, which Bruce overhears. Slade, Farnum and Bradford cover up the suicide with help from Peter’s assistant Vera (Carolyn Jones), who had been secretly scheming with Farnum against Peter for years. Next, they convince Johnny to run against Peter for the presidency of Magnum Studio. Bruce, who Johnny once helped covering up an affair with an extra that threatened to ruin his career, now repays Johnny’s favour by warning him of Bradford, Farnum and Slade’s wrongdoings. Johnny finds out the three men were responsible for Pappas’ suicide and threatens to go to court unless they give up their company shares. After they do so, Johnny reinstates Peter in his position at the company, thereby restoring his relationship with Peter and Doris.

In the end, Peter announces his retirement and puts Johnny in charge as the president. Shortly after, Johnny’s first talking picture goes into production.

Look at the Flowers

In a flashback, Carol gives the imprisoned Negan the offer to bring her Alpha's head in exchange for clearing his name. In the present, Carol places Alpha's disembodied but still moving head atop a pike. Negan then demands Carol to hold up her end of the deal, but Carol criticizes how long it took him to complete his mission and suggests that he wait.

Afterwards, Carol goes off on her own and starts to have visions of Alpha, taunting Carol and comparing her to herself, with no solace in isolation. When Carol gets briefly trapped in the rubble of a collapsing ceiling with a walker approaching, the vision of Alpha suggests to Carol that she "look at the flowers" and accept death, but Carol breaks free in time to put down the walker; the vision of Alpha disperses.

Meanwhile, Beta and two Whisperers find Alpha's head. Enraged, Beta forces one of the Whisperers to get bitten by the head after he unwisely identifies Beta as the "new Alpha"; the other Whisperer flees. He then takes the head and travels to his former home in a nearby town, revealing he was a former country music singer named "Half Moon". In a fit of rage, he destroys much of his former home and then turns on his music loudly as to attract a huge horde of walkers. Having achieved catharsis, he thanks Alpha, puts the head down, and uses part of her skin to repair his mask. Beta then starts to lead the massive horde towards a new destination.

Beforehand, Negan goes to free Lydia, but is instead greeted by punch and interrogated by Daryl. The former explains Alpha's fate at his hands, but Daryl doesn't believe him. They later find themselves surrounded by three Whisperers, having learned of Alpha's fate and treating Negan as the "new Alpha". Negan, pretending to go along with the Whisperers to get them off guard, but then freeing Daryl, uses the opportunity to kill the Whisperers to prove his loyalty to Alexandria.

Elsewhere, the survivors of the Hilltop gather to make sure the children are safe. Rosita encourages Eugene to tell the group about his radio contact and planned meeting with Stephanie. While there are concerns about being led into another trap, they agree Eugene should keep the meeting; Eugene, Ezekiel, and Yumiko set off to a downtown area. Within the city, after discovering a tableau of walkers arranged in humorous situations, they encounter a young woman excited to see them.

Alice through the Looking Glass (1998 film)

The film opens with a mother (Kate Beckinsale) reading ''Through the Looking Glass'' to her daughter Alice (Charlotte Curley). The mother then finds herself travelling through the bedroom mirror into Looking-Glass Land and becoming Alice, but remains an adult.

Alice finds a book containing "Jabberwocky", in mirror writing, and sees chess pieces coming to life. She goes out into a garden with talking flowers. There, she meets the Red Queen from the chess board (Sian Phillips), who shows her that the landscape is laid out like a gigantic chessboard. She will make Alice a queen if she can get as far as the eighth row. Alice becomes one of the White Queen s pawns, and gets into a train that takes her directly to the fourth row. In a wood, the Gnat (Steve Coogan) teaches her about the looking-glass insects. In crossing the wood where things have no names, she forgets her own name, but it comes back on the other side. Next she meets Tweedledum and Tweedledee (Gary Olsen and Marc Warren), who recite the poem "The Walrus and the Carpenter", with the Red King (Michael Medwin) asleep under a tree. The brothers get ready to fight but run away, frightened by a giant crow.

The White Queen (Penelope Wilton) arrives and shows her powers of precognition. With her, Alice goes forward into the fifth row by crossing a stream in a rowing boat, but the Queen is then turned into the Sheep.

Alice enters the sixth row of the chess board by crossing another stream and meets Humpty Dumpty (Desmond Barrit) on his unbirthday, who teaches Alice about portmanteau words before falling off his wall. The White King (Geoffrey Palmer), the king's horses, and the king's men try to help Humpty.

Alice, still a white pawn, crosses yet another stream to enter the seventh row and finds herself in the land of the Red Knight (Greg Wise), who tries to capture her, but the White Knight (Ian Holm) fights him off and leads her through a forest to the last stream, falling off his horse and reciting the poem Haddocks' Eyes. This stream is not much more than a ditch, and Alice can step across it into the eighth row, when a queen's crown appears on her head. She is joined by both the Red and White Queens, who use word play to baffle her. They issue invitations to a coronation party to be hosted by Alice, but the party is chaotic, and Alice finds herself shaking the Red Queen to calm her down.

Alice wakes up safe at home with her daughter, little Alice.

The Three Perils of Man

During the reign of Robert II, King of Scots (1371‒90), the English Sir Philip Musgrave captures Roxburgh castle and is committed to hold it for a specified period to satisfy his mistress Lady Jane Howard. James, Earl of Douglas, takes up a challenge by Robert's daughter Princess Margaret to recapture it within the same period. Sir Walter Scott of Rankleburn assists Douglas indirectly by harassing the English supply chain, to his own advantage. Both Jane and Margaret assume male disguise in order to keep an eye on their respective lovers. After Margaret has recognised Jane and arranged for her to be delivered up to Douglas, she (disguised as her own page) is captured by the English garrison at Roxburgh and executed. A monk conveys instructions to Douglas from her spirit to take revenge. The central part of the novel focusses on a delegation dispatched by Sir Walter Scott to ascertain the future fortunes of his family from the wizard Michael Scott at his castle of Aikwood. It consists of the bard Colley Carol, Thomas Craik (the Deil's Tam), Gibby Jordan of Peatstacknowe, and a friar, with Charlie Scott as leader and a girl and a boy (Delany Hall and Elias) as presents. They encounter a hostile reception. After a series of supernatural events, egress from the castle having become impossible, the wizard arranges a story-telling competition. More supernatural events follow. Back at Roxburgh, faced with the execution of his captured brother and defilement of Jane, Sir Philip takes his own life. In exchange for two baronies Sir Walter Scott takes direct action, capturing the castle by disguising his men as cattle. Margaret tests Douglas's commitment to herself by a further adoption of a disguise, and the couple marry. After a competition among the knights for ladies' favours, the friar unites Jane in marriage with Charlie, and Delany with Colley. The novel ends with an account by Gibby of Michael Scott's death in combat with a diabolical rival.

They are soon joined by other elephants who visit, play, and drink from the water. When the water dries up, Gaia notices a baby elephant suffocating and stuck in the mud, so she goes to its rescue, and the baby is reunited with its mother.

The herd leaves the desert to join the other elephants on the long journey, they take a lunch break to have a family reunion with other herds of elephants, with some not seeing Gaia for over a year. Jomo starts making new friends with the other baby elephants, and for ages, Shani reunites with many of her long-lost cousins. Gaia's herd and other herds of elephants have no luck trying to find food, but a male elephant (who is visiting his family) uses his trunk to drop a bunch of seedpods from trees. Everyone munches happily.

Gaia's herd comes across ancient paths that their ancestors created when they migrated. When they've reached a dry waterhole, they noticed an elephant skeleton. Shani shows a confused Jomo a life lesson. The herd moves on and finds another waterhole (this time with water). As the elephants drink, Jomo plays with a group of warthogs. The water is ruined by its previous visitors, so the elephants munch on Mopani trees but are chased off by caterpillars eating the entire trees.

The Herd continues their journey to a small little island. There is no water for them to drink, but Gaia leads her herd to Baobab trees which they could drink water from its sap. Shani teaches the young elephants how to get sap by ripping the thick bark. The Herd rests on the island for the night.

Continuing their journey, the Herd trudges through sandstorms. Shani and Gaia sense the ground trembling, which meant a river close by, but they are despaired when they reach the river. It is far below the cliffs where the elephants are, but thanks to the help of a flock of Quelea birds, the herd makes their way to Victoria Falls, the place that Gaia has been searching for. The Herd happily drinks but are soon confronted by crocodiles. Luckily no one was hurt when they crossed the river. They reach the islands, and The Herd enjoys their times in Victoria Falls and even munch on palm nuts.

Meanwhile, in the highlands of Angola, rain starts to pour, which means the water is going off to the Okavango Delta, Shani and Jomo's home.

Soon after, Gaia starts to get tired and weak and finds the food hard to eat. She and The Herd start making their way back to Okavango. Shani helps Gaia gather the herd, with Jomo by their side. Gaia realizes that the Angolan falls are early, and she and Shani immediately gather the herd to use the shortest route, but they soon find themselves confronted by a pride of lions. As the elephants settle in for the night, the lions attack Jomo, but he is saved by Shani. But by morning, Gaia dies, with the herd sharing a mournful goodbye to their matriarch, while the lions share their feast. Shani finds her leadership to the other elephants difficult. A week later, an elephant gives birth to a newborn baby calf. Jomo is unimpressed, but soon lets go of being the baby of the family and warms up to his new playmate.

Shani soon uses Gaia's memories and begins to lead the herd back to the Delta. They are soon confronted by a rival herd of elephants, who are going after the newborn calf. Shani stands her ground at the rival matriarch, and the rivals retreat. They make their way home to Okavango, where the land is bursting back to life. The Herd soon accepts Shani as the new matriarch, while Jomo teaches the newborn calf how to play with the other animals.

Freddy Krueger's A Nightmare on Elm Street

An ambulance arrives at the home of Roger and Patti Hayes, who had found their daughter Allison near death in her bed, slashed and bruised with no hints of who attacked her. Dr. Juliann Quinn is preparing to leave New York City and her boyfriend Doug behind for her hometown of Springwood in Ohio, where she has a job offer at the Westin Hills Psychiatric Hospital waiting for her. Falling asleep, she has a nightmare about Freddy Krueger, but wakes up due to her cigarette lighting her bed up and forcing her to quench the flame quickly. In the Springwood Medical Center, Freddy attacks Allison once again while she's in surgery, but she starts to fight back on her nemesis, leading the doctors to conclude that her body tried to die, but her mind would not allow it. Juliann travels to Springwood by plane, studying Freddy's dossier, reading about Amanda Krueger and her horrific rape at the ''Our Lady of Sorrows' Institution For the Mentally Ill'' (the precursor of Westin Hills), and even starts to have nightmares about Freddy on the plane while dozing off. Once arrived, she continues to have the nightmares, but has learned mental techniques to keep Freddy from killing her for the time. Juliann is assigned to be Allison's doctor, and to Allison's relief, proves to be the only one capable of understanding what she is going through. Juliann and Allison enters the dream world together, where they encounter Freddy.

Freddy comes close to killing Juliann, but Allison turns herself into a living ball of flame and wards him off long enough for the two heroines to awake themselves. After this, Juliann has Allison put on Hypnocil while staying at the Springwood hospital. After meeting with Dr. Marlin, he makes it clear to Juliann that Allison will not be allowed to take Hypnocil once she's transferred to the Westin Hills Psychiatric Hospital, due to the scandal that happened there three years ago. At home, Juliann goes to take a shower before sleep, but she had in fact already fallen asleep and is surprised to find herself in the Oval Office, where Freddy is sitting in the president's chair. She tries to run away, but finds herself too exhausted. Freddy reappears and stabs her in the stomach while pointing out her fatal mistake: she had cared so much for Allison's safety that she had dropped the guard on her own. Allison is devastated to hear of her death and swears revenge on Freddy. Dr. Watley is reassigned to be her new doctor, but Allison refuses to explain her afflictions to him, saying it wouldn't make any difference if she did. She prepares mentally, thinking up clothing and a glove akin to Freddy's and fights him, but he ultimately tricks her, causing her to attack Watley while sleepwalking in reality, thinking that she's attacking Freddy; Watley orders for her to be sedated and sent to the secure ward.

Peninsula (film)

A zombie outbreak occurs in South Korea, where the government is overwhelmed in a day. Korea Marine Captain Jung-seok drives his family members to a ship. On the way, he encounters a couple with a young daughter, but he refuses their pleas for help as the man is bleeding. Jung-seok's family board a ship where an infected man turns into a zombie and infects several people in a cabin, including Jung-seok's nephew Dong-hwan. Jung-seok's sister refuses to leave Dong-hwan, so Jung-seok closes off the cabin while zombies bite her. Jung-seok stops his brother-in-law Chul-min from entering as armed soldiers arrive. Other nations including the United States and NATO contain the outbreak by quarantining South Korea.

Four years later in Hong Kong, a guilt-ridden Jung-seok and Chul-min are recruited by Chinese mobsters for a mission with two other Koreans to return to South Korea and retrieve a truck containing US$20 million; if successful, they will supposedly receive half of the money. The team arrives at the peninsula at night by boat and finds the truck. The team fends off and kills the zombie truck driver, making noises that attract more zombies. Jung-seok shoots several, and the team escapes.

On the way back to Incheon Port, the team is ambushed by a rogue militia, Unit 631, which uses light to attract more zombies, leading to the team crashing their vehicles. Jung-seok is thrown out of the truck while Chul-min hides in it. The other members of the team are killed, one due to the crash, and one by Unit 631 leader Sergeant Hwang. Jung-seok is rescued by two sisters in a car: Joon, a skilled driver who is adept at manipulating and killing zombies, and young Yu-jin. They return to their hideout, joining their grandfather Elder Kim and mother Min-jung. Jung-Seok realizes Min-jung and Yu-jin were part of the family he refused to help four years ago.

Meanwhile, Unit 631 take the truck to their compound. They imprison Chul-min, forcing him to take part in two-minute survival games between unarmed prisoners and the zombies. Private Kim discovers the truck's cash and informs Captain Seo, who contacts the mobsters and hatches a plan to escape the peninsula with the truck, keeping the plan a secret from the rest of Unit 631. Meanwhile, Min-jung learns from Jung-seok that the mobsters' ship is at Incheon Port waiting to extract him and the truck. She decides to steal the truck to escape with her family and Jung-seok.

The following evening, Jung-seok and Min-jung attempt to steal the truck. While holding Private Kim at gunpoint, Jung-seok learns that Chul-min is alive, and interrupts a survival game to rescue him, killing several zombies and Unit 631 soldiers. Chul-min saves Jung-seok from being bitten, then Sergeant Hwang kills Chul-min. Min-jung fends off Captain Seo and saves Jung-seok from Unit 631. Min-jung and Jung-seok escape the compound in the truck, but are blocked by zombies. In their car, Joon, Yu-jin and Elder Kim distract the zombies to free the truck.

Using their vehicles, Unit 631 gives chase, while zombies attack the humans. The family and Jung-seok successfully disable the pursuing vehicles, causing Sergeant Hwang to be overwhelmed by zombies. Captain Seo, who had killed Private Kim, ambushes the family at Incheon Port and holds Joon hostage. Yu-jin distracts Seo to free Joon. Elder Kim protects Yu-jin; but Seo mortally shoots him, wounds Min-jung in the leg and escapes with the truck to the ship. The mobsters betray Seo and shoot him. As he dies, Seo reverses the truck to keep the ship's cargo hold open, allowing the zombies outside to enter and kill the mobsters.

The family signals a passing United Nations Chinook helicopter. The injured Min-jung stays behind to clear a path for Jung-seok, Joon and Yu-jin to escape the zombies. They safely reach the helicopter, where U.N. troops refuse to help Min-jung. Surrounded by zombies, Min-jung prepares to kill herself.

Jung-seok remembers Chul-min saying that Jung-seok did not do his best to save their family, and is spurred to help Min-jung. Min-jung decides to live, and she escapes the zombies with Jung-seok's assistance. The family, Jung-seok, and the U.N. troops leave the peninsula in the helicopter.

Miss Scarlet and The Duke

In Victorian London (1882), Eliza Scarlet is left almost penniless when her father, Henry Scarlet, unexpectedly dies. Although marriage would appear to be the only option for a woman’s financial security, Eliza resolves to continue her father's detective agency alone, working under his name. Struggling to build her reputation in the male-dominated world of crime-solving, she frequently calls on her old friend William Wellington (Duke), a gruff, womanising Detective Inspector of Scotland Yard, to help her acquire cases, but this seldom works. Instead, Eliza often resorts to stealing case files from William's office.

Eliza Scarlet is determined, clever, and wily. Series writer and creator Rachael New took inspiration for the character from Jane Austen's Elizabeth Bennett (''Pride and Prejudice'') and Scarlett O'Hara from ''Gone with the Wind''. Born into a middle-class family, Eliza uses her appearance as a refined Victorian lady to her advantage when working on cases. But underneath Eliza is scrappy and feisty, much to many people's surprise, which works in her favour. William and Eliza work on numerous cases together, though she is uncredited, causing disputes between them. Eliza employs the services of a known criminal, Moses, much to William's annoyance. Moses is amused by Eliza's gumption and they connect as outsiders to society. Eliza befriends Rupert Parker, a wealthy man who loans her money for her agency as an investment. Rupert is the bachelor (and secretly gay) son of Mrs. Parker, who owns Eliza's house, and relies on Eliza's advice to navigate his personal life. Eliza lives with Ivy, who cooks for her and helped raise her after Eliza's mother died (some time before the series begins). Eliza and William bicker and argue constantly, but also share moments of subtle flirtation and care for each other deeply.

William is known in the police force as "The Duke", a nickname referring to the Duke of Wellington. Eliza's late father Henry had saved William from the London streets as a child, and later mentored him through the police academy. When William and Eliza were teenagers they once shared a chaste kiss. William looked up to Henry as an honourable and good man. Though William is irritated by Eliza's detective aspirations, he cares for her and gradually begins to show respect for her skills.

Brendan (novel)

''Brendan'' is a reimagining of the life of Brendan the Navigator, a fifth century Irish saint, ‘born in 484 in what is now Tralee, Ireland’, whose entrance into the world, as recalled by Bishop Erc, was attended by a miracle: the spontaneous combustion of a patch of nearby woodland. Erc's decision to set aside the life of the new-born child in service of the “new faith” sees Brendan separated from his parents, Finnloag and Cara, and raised ‘to the glory of the new and true grand God’, at the school of Abbot Jarlath. Equipped with Latin and accompanied by his childhood friend, Finn, the adolescent Brendan is sent out on a mission to bring a blessing to the castle at Cashel, where a new king is to be crowned. Their journey is interrupted, however, when they are intercepted by a druidic tribe, who, unimpressed by Brendan's protective bishop's ring, insist upon bringing them to the court of their own king, Bauheen. Bauheen's health problems, particularly his inability to walk, appear to be miraculously healed by the young monk, whose Christ-like command, ‘”walk!”’, is obeyed by the king, to the astonishment of all onlookers. The conversion of both the king and his subjects seems the natural response to this extraordinary happening, and this small kingdom is brought out from the “old faith” and into the “new”.

Brendan expects to bring the simple blessing of Bishop Erc to a new monarch at Cashel, but, upon their arrival at the castle, the travellers are confronted by a clown named Crosan, who informs them of a succession crisis. The destiny of the crown, and the kingdom with it, is caught between two suitors: the first, Hugh the Black, the charismatic champion of the “old faith”; the second, the humble, unimpressive, and ironically named Hugh the Handsome, who is, controversially, a follower of the “new faith”. Into this cloud of confusion and tension steps an old friend, Maeve, who, following her childhood sojourn at Jarlath's school alongside Brendan, had been stationed at a nunnery, before escaping to become a roving warrior.  Maeve's scheme to demonstrate Hugh the Black's unsuitability for the kingship – a scheme that involves her wrestling him to the ground in order to prove his rumoured infertility – is successful, and it ensures that Hugh the Handsome is installed as King of Cashel. In a further and unexpected victory for the “new faith”, Hugh the Black's most potent weapon, a cunning and eloquent bard named MacLennin, is both baptised and renamed by Brendan, who gives him the new name of Colman. His first escapade at an end, Brendan returns to Jarlath's abbey, accompanied by Finn, Crosan, and Colman. Bishop Erc's tales from the time of Saint Patrick, especially those concerning the martyrs who journeyed across the sea in search of the “land of the blessed”, stir in Brendan memories of his own childhood vision, in which, from a vantage point on cliffs overlooking the stormy waves, he himself had seen the same mysterious paradise: “Tir-na-n-Og”. Following the eventual death of Bishop Erc, Brendan is inspired to follow in the tradition of the “curragh martyrs”, to sail the high seas in search of the “land of the blessed”. Boarding the boat, he is joined by Finn, Crosan the Clown, Colman the Bard, and two monks from Jarlath's abbey, Dismas and Gestas. As the ship sets sail, however, Finn, who is unused to life on the water, falls overboard, and is apparently lost to the waves. Believing his friend to be dead, Brendan continues his journey, beset by doubt, fear, grief, and numbness, which becomes for him a dark night of the soul. Within the turmoil of this crisis, the adventurers encounter a giant whale, a hellish volcanic eruption, unhinged monks who inhabit desolate islands, and an uncouth stranger full of tales, sat astride a rock in the middle of the sea. The tragic death of Dismas brings further torment for Brendan, and a loss of faith for Gestas, who is cast into deep depression by the loss of his bosom friend.

Upon returning from this, his first voyage, Brendan is greeted by joy and tragedy. In his absence both of his parents have died, but he is astonished to find that Finn is alive. Leaving his wife, Finn follows his old friend on a new quest to build monasteries all over Ireland. Brendan's tales of his voyage on the ''Cara'' grow with each telling, and the men that are drawn to him give their lives to the “new faith”, many of them becoming monks in his newly built monasteries. Following the calamitous death of one of his disciples, Beothacht – a death for which Brendan feels personally responsible – he leaves his vocation as a founder of monasteries, and takes to the sea once more, a broken man desperately in search of Tir-na-n-Og. His quest ends in despair, and, following a misadventure on an island once inhabited by monks, the pilgrim returns home again, weary, dispirited, and convinced that his life has been a failure. Encouraged to spend his last days as a travelling preacher, Brendan journeys through the rugged countryside of Wales. The old saint is bent on using his twilight years in the service of the poor, the care of the destitute and elderly, and in offering spiritual council to all who will listen, before taking his last voyage back to Ireland, and finally, having produced several miracles, bringing peace to Cashel.

Mine Own Executioner (novel)

Felix Milne is a London psycho-analyst who divides his time between private practice and a charitable clinic run by the philanthropist Dr Norris Pile, where treatment is provided free to poor patients. He is one of the lay therapists on the staff, not being a medical doctor.

Milne is disillusioned with his work. Although he is able to help 12-year-old Charlie Oakes stop wetting the bed, by persuading the boy's father not to punish him for it, he is unsure how much he is really able to do for the most intractable patients.

Milne is unhappy in his home life, too. He has tired of his wife Patricia and is ready to seek sexual excitement elsewhere. The couple are on the verge of separation, but in spite of his professional expertise Milne is unable to solve his own problems. Family friends Peter and Barbara Edge come for dinner, and Peter quietly asks Milne whether he would take Barbara on as a private patient, as he thinks she may be "over sexed". Although Milne refuses to accept her as a patient, she does talk to him frankly, flirts, and confesses that she is not in love with her husband. Milne attempts several times to start an affair – without success, as Barbara declines to become sexually involved.

Milne is asked to take on the case of Adam Lucian, a young ex-RAF fighter pilot. He has already made two attempts to murder his wife, Molly, and she has persuaded him to accept treatment, but as Lucian hates and fears doctors he consents only on the basis that he will never have to see one. Milne is unsure whether he will be able to help a patient with 'schizoid tendencies', but agrees to try.

Under the influence of sodium pentothal, Lucian talks of being shot down in the jungles of Burma, and of being captured by Japanese soldiers. He at last shamefacedly admits to Milne that under interrogation and threat of torture he had divulged sensitive military information to the enemy. Lucian arrives to his next appointment elated and feels himself completely cured, having finally got his guilty secret off his chest. Milne, however, feels there is something still deeper in Lucian's history that needs to come out. Although Milne vaguely feels that therapy should continue there and then, he has a headache and he lets Lucian go, agreeing to continue in a few days time.

Dr Pile is offered a substantial grant to support the clinic on condition that he removes from its staff medically unqualified 'quacks'. Milne tenders his resignation.

While Milne is again attempting to seduce Barbara, Patricia phones to report that the police want to speak to him. Lucian has shot his wife four times, and gone on the run. After speaking to the dying Molly in hospital, Milne returns home to find Lucian there, talking to Patricia. Lucian escapes, and is later spotted on the high ledge of an office building. Milne climbs a fireman's ladder in an effort to talk his patient down, but as he reaches the top Lucian shoots himself.

The coroner at the inquest is an elderly doctor with a fearsome reputation for finding somebody to blame. He takes a dim view of unqualified therapists, and interprets Milne's candid admission of uncertainty as tantamount to an acknowledgement that he was out of his depth. Only a last-minute intervention by Dr James Garsten, one of Milne's medically-qualified colleagues at the clinic, averts a highly critical coroner's report.

Milne is angry, both with himself for having letting Lucian go, and with Garsten for using his position as a doctor to pander to the coroner's prejudices, even though he himself benefitted. He tells Patricia that he is fed up with being 'sucked dry' by his patients and patronised by the medical profession. He starts to destroy his records, telling her that he wants to give up psycho-therapy and to come back to her. At that moment, Charlie Oakes arrives for an appointment. Milne recognises that he does after all have a certain talent for dealing with people's problems, and that he can help his bed-wetting patient. Patricia remarks "Well? What's wrong with that?"

Freud (TV series)

The story tells of a fictional criminal case in Vienna in 1886, which marked the start of a major conspiracy.

During the party, the countess together with her husband, Viktor von Szápáry (Philipp Hochmair), will stage a séance revolving around the figure of the Hungarian medium Fleur Salomé (Ella Rumpf).

t From that moment, Sigmund will find himself in the midst of murders, conspiracies, revenges and supernatural facts that he will have to solve by resorting to his new knowledge and the help of his housekeeper Leonore and war-traumatised police inspector Alfred Kiss (Georg Friedrich).

After Leaving Mr. Mackenzie

'''Part One'''

From her cheap hotel on the Quai des Grands-Augustins, Julia Martin inhabits ''Rive Gauche'' Paris, lunching alone in a German restaurant in the rue de la Huchette, drinking Pernod, wine and anything else. Locked in her room, she reads most of the time.

Though attractive at thirty-six, she feels past her prime, fatigued and fatalistic. After a failed early marriage roaming Europe and the death of a baby, she had drifted to Paris during the ''Années folles''. She has survived for six months on 300 francs a week from ex-lover Mr Mackenzie, posted each Tuesday by high-handed solicitor Henri Legros. One Tuesday Maître Legros writes informing Julia he is instructed to terminate the allowance, enclosing final payment of 1,500 francs. That evening she follows Mr Mackenzie down the Boulevard du Montparnasse to Restaurant Albert. She sits at his table, pours herself wine from his carafe and confronts him. She ends saying she doesn't want his severance cheque, slaps him lightly around the face with her glove and walks out.

From a nearby table Englishman George Horsfield has watched the incident. When Julia exits, Mr Horsfield follows and befriends her, buys her a drink in another café and takes her to a cinema. Afterwards, seeing her cry, the awkward Mr Horsfield invites her to his hotel to talk. He pours whiskey and she describes fragments of her life since leaving London the February after the 1918 armistice a decade or so earlier. When Mr Horsfield asks if she is stuck for money, she takes from her purse two ten franc notes and some coins, saying that is all she has. She recounts to him her rejection of Mr Mackenzie's severance cheque (which Mr Horsfield had witnessed in Restaurant Albert). Mr Horsfield gives her another 1,500 francs, suggests she visit London and jots down his address there.

'''Part Two'''

In London Julia books into at a drab Bloomsbury hotel. The first morning she walks aimlessly, reminiscing. In Woburn Square a familiar old flower seller man ignores her when she buys his violets. On Tottenham Court Road she envisages a ghost of her younger self emerge from the fog. She crosses Oxford Street into Charing Cross Road, gets lost in Soho and stops at a Lyons tea shop, overhearing patrons chatter while a band plays military music.

Reunions with her dour Uncle Griffiths and disapproving sister Norah are tense. At his Bayswater boarding house Uncle Griffiths says she should have secured a settlement from her ex-husband, prior to Mr Mackenzie. He gives her a pound note but wants little more contact. Living in Acton, Norah has devoted her life to their sick mother, now dying, so is unsympathetic to Julia's plight. Their mother dies during Julia's London visit. Julia attends the funeral at Golders Green Crematorium, causes a scene at the wake and is asked to leave.

She looks up W. Neil James Esq, her rich and generous first love from when she was nineteen. Ushered into his study, Julia sees Mr James is different. He says he has forty-five minutes. She hints at hardship, but to him this is an old story. He asks to change the subject, looks at the clock, shows her his art collection and sees her out. He posts her twenty pounds, stressing there can be no more. Some of it she spends on new clothes, some on second hand ones. She moves to a boarding house in cheaper Notting Hill.

Mr Horsfield, also back in London, takes her for outings, meals and drinks, but withdraws his support as his interest in the troubled Julia wanes. Retreating to his Holland Park house, he promises to visit her in Paris in a week or ten days.

'''Part Three'''

Julia is back in her cheap Paris hotel on the Quai des Grands-Augustins, overlooking the Île de la Cité. On the eleventh day she receives a letter from Mr Horsfield explaining he is unable to visit as soon as he had hoped. Enclosing ten pounds, he writes he cannot send more as times are hard. He closes by wishing her the best of luck.

In the late afternoon, from inside a café on the rue Dauphine, Mr Mackenzie notices Julia approach on the street. He shields his face so as not to be seen, but she sees him anyway, looks away and passes aimlessly with her head down. Having second thoughts, he leaves and catches up with her at a kerb where she waits to cross. He invites her for a drink, takes her to a café and buys her a Pernod. She drinks it quickly and asks him to lend her 100 francs. Flustered, he pushes some cash across the table, which she puts in to her bag uncounted. She looks untidy, set to continue in the downward spiral of other Rhys heroines, but accepts Mr Mackenzie's offer of a second drink. He buys her another Pernod and leaves.

Tranquility (novel)

In final years of the communist Hungarian People's Republic, writer Andor Weér–the novel's narrator–lives in dysfunction with his mother, Rebeka Weér. Rebeka is a former celebrated actress who has not left their Budapest apartment in fifteen years. Andor's father was a theatre critic and a former member of the ÁVH secret police who defected to the West after the 1956 revolution. Andor's twin sister, Judit, a talented violinist, fled Hungary fifteen years earlier. This betrayal and Rebeka's inability to lure Judit back to Hungary caused the authorities to deny Rebeka leading stage roles. Rebeka performs a symbolic burial of Judit and refused to go outside of their apartment. Judit committed suicide, but Andor keeps her death a secret and sends letters to Rebeka in her name. Rebeka is a crazed woman who has a strong emotional hold over Andor that verges on Oedipal. He wishes to escape his mother's maniacal control, but worries about leaving her alone. Andor quickly falls in love with Eszter Fehé, a troubled young Romanian woman with a mysterious past. The two met on the Liberty Bridge. Eszter helps Andor type his works and get a publishing deal for his book. The editor of the publisher is an older woman who Andor eventually begins a crude sexual and Oedipal relationship with. He later learns the woman was his father's mistress when his father was an agent of the secret police. Andor's love for Eszter is further complicated by her past. The novel begins with Rebeka's funeral, and progresses through the past with a nonlinear narrative structure.

Rogue's Gallery (1968 film)

Matigari ma Njiruungi

The story begins with Matigari burying his weapons under a fig tree. After killing his oppressor, Howard Williams, he vows to resolve conflicts peacefully from now on. Before returning home, however, he wants to find his people.

He seems to have been away for a longer time, as he marvels at the changes he sees: people are now driving their own cars, and the city has grown considerably. He decides to start looking for his people at a factory. However, he is appalled when he discovers that some children pay an entrance fee to rummage through the garbage at a dump. One boy fights another for a shoelace, so he intervenes and chases the bully away. The other boy, Muriuki, then leads him to a scrap yard, explaining that the children here use old cars for shelter. When Matigari tries to get to them, they throw stones at him until he becomes unconscious.

A factory worker named Ngaruro comes to Matigari's aid, bringing him to a cooler place where he can recover from his injuries. On the way, Matigari tells Ngaruro the story how he killed Mr. Williams for oppressing and exploiting the people: He wanted to kill Mr. Williams when he was on the telephone, when his servant, Mr. Boy, came in and jumped on his back. Seeing that he would not stand a chance against two people, Matigari escaped with Mr. Williams chasing him. Eventually, however, Matigari was able to kill Williams in the mountains. Hearing the name Williams, Ngaruro mentions that the factory owner goes by the same name and that the name of his deputy is Boy. Matigari thinks this is a coincidence.

Matigari and Ngaruro finally reach a bar, where Matigari is supposed to rest. However, Ngaruro cannot stay with him, as he has to go back to the factory early to be on time for a strike. Matigari orders food and drink but does not eat anything. Instead, he is harassed by a prostitute called Guthera, who is hiding from two policemen. When she sees them heading toward the bar, she tries to escape. However, the policemen catch her and set their dog on her. Matigari intervenes without any fear, telling the policemen to stop threatening innocent people. His courage frightens the two cops, who eventually let go of Guthera.

Back at the bar, Guthera explains that she hates the police for killing her father, who was arrested because he was a patriot fighting for independence. As a way of thanking Matigari for saving her life, she decides to stay with him and help him get home. The group eventually reaches an enormous mansion which Matigari claims is his. They are stopped by two men, who turn out to be the sons of Mr. Williams and Mr. Boy. Robert Williams is a powerful man, who has sold the house to John Boy Junior. They demand to see a title deed from Matigari, proving his ownership of the house. Matigari refuses to cooperate and is arrested when he tries to open the gate.

He finds himself in a dark cell with other inmates, who were arrested for crimes they committed out of desperation, or for "spreading communism." Matigari shares his food with them, which reminds the drunk inmate of the last supper. When he tells them how he got arrested, the inmates are amazed to see this freedom fighter in person, as they have already heard the story of him confronting the police.

Having exchanged their stories, the inmates are released under mysterious circumstances, which leads to Matigari becoming a legend who is compared to an angel and even God himself for being able to escape prison.

People all over the country have been adding more fantastic details to his stories, glorifying him as a saint. When he now roams the country on his quest to find truth and justice, he is constantly sent away because the people do not recognize him. He visits ordinary people until an old woman tells him to go to the students, as they are also searching the truth. As it turns out, however, the student and the teacher are too afraid to help Matigari out. He then decides to go to the church to ask the priest for advice.

The priest, being a puppet of the government, is no help either. Instead, he suggests Matigari attend a meeting later that day and talk to the Minister for Truth and Justice himself. At the meeting, which is observed by representatives from a number of Western countries, the prisoners who escaped with Matigari earlier are presented to the public and convicted by judges and a jury of dignitaries loyal to the government. The only man who is not convicted turns out to be an informer.

The Minister also announces that Mr. William's company has graciously given shares to the great leader and himself, claiming that now the people own part of the company, as the government is their party.

Matigari confronts the Minister for Truth and Justice directly, calling his government unlawful and accusing him of being part of the oppressing force, which exploits their people. The Minister presents Matigari as a madman, before sending him and Ngaruro, who stood up for the workers' rights, to a mental asylum. The people at the assembly, however, start singing songs about revolution, which are quickly banned by the Minister.

After the meeting, the government keeps imposing stricter laws to oppress the people in an effort to eradicate the revolutionary thoughts of the people. At the mental hospital, Matigari decides to dig up his weapons and fight the oppressors with violence, as he has realized that words and reasoning alone do not affect them.

Again, with the help of Guthera and Muriuki, he manages to escape from the mental asylum. He plans to get his weapons and attack Mr. Williams' house to take what is his. On the way to the tree where his guns are buried, the group manages to steal a Mercedes from a couple having sex in the car, which they later find out belongs to the wife of the Minister of Truth and Justice. The news on the radio informs them of Ngaruro's death.

Matigari is not able to get to the tree, however, after the informer has discovered him. Chased by the police, he drives the Mercedes through the front door into Mr. Williams' house. On the way, he sees masses of people waiting for a miracle to happen, as the word of his return has spread like wildfire. The house eventually explodes, but Matigari is able to escape.

Guthera, Muriuki, and Matigari then try to run away from the police, who are relentlessly chasing them. Just before reaching a river, which Matigari says will lead to their safety, he and Guthera are gunned down. Their bodies fall into the river and are never found, leading to new myths and legends about Matigari having survived. Muriuki, the only one having survived the struggle, eventually reaches the fig tree, digs up Matigari's guns and starts to sing the song of victory.

Concurrently, Beta continues leading the horde towards Oceanside, but suddenly stops when he feels something is amiss and begins to suspect that the survivors are leading him into a trap. Just then, he spots one of the hospital cats prowling and the voices in Beta's head then direct him towards the hospital. Alden and Aaron, who have been following the horde from a distance, notice it changing direction and try to contact Gabriel. Failing to get a signal, the two decide to retreat, but are unexpectedly surrounded by a group of Whisperers. Thomas tells Marie how his mother, Sheila, died in the home, and remarks that he misses her. When Andreas returns home from his shift, he finds Thomas in a bathtub, appearing to have committed suicide, but quickly realizes it is simply a prank, and that Thomas has painted a fake wound on his neck. Andreas, who suffers from heart troubles, is startled by the incident.

Later, Thomas and Marie join Andreas for dinner, which is also attended by Thomas's successful brother Jack, an attorney, and his girlfriend, Sharon. Later, Thomas confesses to Marie that he wishes his father was dead, and laments that the prank they played earlier did not trigger a fatal heart attack. That night, Marie and Thomas witness Andreas having sex with Sharon. The next morning, Thomas visits his ailing maternal grandfather, Charles, in the hospital. Meanwhile, Marie informs Jack that Sharon had sex with his father. That afternoon, Marie passes out after finding the family's mutilated cat in a closet.

Marie joins Andreas for a drink, and tells him she suspects either Jack or Yuri, the family's handyman, of murdering the cat. Andreas denies her claim, specifically regarding Jack, whom he says will inherit the whole of his grandfather Charles's $250 million estate. Andreas tells Marie that Thomas had an unusual bond with his mother, and that he never recovered from her death. Marie suddenly grows tired, ostensibly from a spiked drink, and has a nightmare in which she is raped by Andreas.

Charles is discharged from the hospital and placed in hospice care at the familial estate. The same day, Thomas leaves the family estate, telling Marie he has a business meeting but will return later. Marie visits with the ailing Charles in his room, and he tells her how much she resembles his deceased daughter. Charles offers to pay Marie for sexual favors as part of his dying wish, which she obliges. When Marie later tries to phone Thomas at his office, she is told by a secretary that there is no scheduled meeting there. That night, Andreas offers Marie several drinks, and the two visit with Charles. Marie realizes her drink has been drugged, and she again begins losing consciousness.

Marie has a nightmare in which she finds Andreas performing a craniotomy on a terrified Sharon in the basement of the home. After awaking, Marie is confronted by Jack, who tells her it was his idea that she and Thomas kill Andreas; Jack proposes, however, that they instead join forces and kill Thomas, which will result in Marie inheriting Charles's estate. The two are confronted by Andreas, who incapacitates Marie before restraining Jack to his operating chair in the basement, and performs a lobotomy on him. When Marie awakens, she finds Andreas calmly frying pieces of Jack's brain tissue in the kitchen. Upstairs, she finds Charles's corpse in his bed with his scalp removed. Marie is terrorized by Andreas as she flees through the mansion. In the basement operating room, she finds Jack in the operating chair, and discovers Sheila lying in a hyperbaric chamber. Marie is startled to see Sheila open her eyes.

A terrified Marie flees and seeks help from Yuri in the guest house. Yuri pretends to phone police, but in facts summons Andreas. Marie momentarily manages to escape their grasp, and finds Sharon's dead body in the greenhouse. She is recaptured and brought to the basement, where Andreas prepares to perform surgery on her. Thomas arrives, and it becomes clear he is in cahoots with his father: The two have orchestrated to transplant the ailing Sheila's brain into Marie's healthy body, allowing Sheila to continue living. As Andreas performs a craniotomy on Marie, a tear streams down her face before he removes her brain.

A man named Frank Madden (Guy Madison) buys a ranch near a small town. Greedy neighboring ranchers, the Shipley's, had been grazing their cattle on the ranch while it was setting empty. Madden hires Native Americans to help him on the ranch. The townspeople resent him for this. The Shipley's also resent him because they can no longer graze their cattle on his land.

The old Native American, Matara, shows up on Madden's ranch; it becomes apparent that he is actually Madden's grandfather, as Madden is half Native American and has chosen to forsake that heritage to pass as white. He tells Matara to leave but, Matara convinces him to pretend he is his Native American houseman.

Shortly before Madden bought the ranch, the three Shipley brothers had killed the wife of a Native American man named Takola (Philip Breedlove) near a dead tree on the ranch. Takola, who had disappeared after his wife's murder, returns to the hanging tree and sees Madden and, mistaking Madden for one of the Shipley's, takes a shot at him. Madden is not hit and after a minor scuffle Takola tells him about what happened at the tree. Maddin tells Takola that as far as he is concerned he never saw Takola there, the shot at him never happened and Takola should never return there.

Romantic feelings begin to blossom between Madden and Catherine Cantrell (Felicia Farr), daughter of the local land agent through whom Madden bought the ranch. Meanwhile, although the Shipley's supposedly hate Native Americans, one of the Shipley brothers cheats on his wife with a young Native American woman named Taini (Kathryn Grant). Taini is one of the Native Americans whom Madden has befriended. This makes the Shipley brother jealous because he thinks that Taini is also having an affair with Madden, although this is not the case.

One Shipley brother sees Madden in the saloon and tries to pick a fight. Madden punches him and walks out into the street. Shipley follows him out of the saloon and calls him out. Madden refuses to turn around, thus daring Shipley to shoot him in the back. Shipley does not dare do this with the whole town watching and Madden walks away.

Takola catches the same Shipley brother, who threatened Madden in town, returning to the ranch one night and shoots him in the back. When Madden comes into town to buy supplies the next day the other Shipley brothers, having just brought their brother's body into town, accuse him of the murder because of the incident in the saloon. They try to shoot him down in the street, but the Sheriff stops them and arrests Madden. The Shipley's go to the saloon and, after several drinks, lead a mob to the jail to lynch Madden. The mob overpowers the Sheriff and begins to lead Madden to the nearest tree with Catherine and the Sheriff begging them to wait for a trial.

Before the mob goes much further, Taini steps in front of them and tells them that Madden could not possibly have shot anyone because he was with her the whole night. This is a lie, but the mob believes it and releases Madden. Catherine also believes it and leaves Madden standing in the street. Madden follows Catherine home and tries to convince her that Taini was lying, but she refuses to believe him because of Taini's bad reputation. As Madden walks down the street to get his belongings from the jail, his grandfather Matara arrives in a wagon. As Taini walks up to them, the grandfather shows Madden a pistol that he was going to use to defend Madden after he heard that he was in jail. The Shipley brothers open up on Madden, the grandfather and Tiani. Tiani is hit in the arm, the grandfather is shot in the chest and Madden picks up the pistol and shoots both Shipley's.

Matara dies in Madden's arms. Madden then announces to the whole town that it was his real Grandfather and that Madden's Native American name is Neola. Madden decides to sell the ranch and move on. The Sheriff arrives as he is about to leave and tells him that Taini revealed that she had learned that Takola had shot the Shipley brother and that she also revealed his location to the Sheriff, who had then arrested him. He also says that he will see that Takola gets a fair trial. He goes on to say that he hopes Madden comes back some day because most of the townspeople feel that they had wronged Madden. As Madden turns to ride away Catherine, dressed in traveling clothes, arrives on a horse and after a brief conversation the two ride off together. ````

No Straight Roads

Indie rock duo Bunk Bed Junction, consisting of Mayday and Zuke, participate in the annual Lights Up Auditions to join record label No Straight Roads and bring rock back to relevance. The audition itself is judged by the CEO of NSR, Tatiana, and the top artists from the label as they witness Mayday and Zuke's performance to determine if they are worthy. After Bunk Bed Junction finishes the course, the artists choose to dismiss them. This sets off Mayday's temper, causing her to backtalk Tatiana. Tatiana remarks that the age of rock is over and EDM is the only genre currently in demand in Vinyl City.

On the way home, Mayday complains about NSR dismissing them, while Zuke gives them the benefit of the doubt before they come across a televised broadcast of their audition. The footage showing their performance powering the audition Qwasa to almost full capacity leads Mayday to suspicion. Tatiana then announces that due to Bunk Bed Junction's actions, she has banned rock from future auditions, and insists on any future artists to play only EDM to maintain order. All of a sudden, the power in Vinyl City goes out, and its backup energy is directed solely to NSR's elites. Reaching their breaking point, the duo decide to revolt against NSR's grip on the city to bring back rock and restore power to the people. Their first plan of action is to crash and hijack the concert of DJ Subatomic Supernova, one of NSR's artists who is the charter of the Cast Tech District and currently responsible for launching the label's new satellite.

Their defeat of DJ Subatomic Supernova grants them control of his district, in which they declare their musical revolution to Tatiana. Later, Bunk Bed Junction meets their self-proclaimed number 1 fan, Kliff, who offers to provide them with guidance on how to defeat NSR by taking down its other artists and gaining control of their districts. Their next target is Sayu, a virtual mermaid-like idol and the Akusuka District's charter, who is shown to have been created and piloted by a group of teenagers.

After Mayday and Zuke defeat Sayu, Tatiana reluctantly summons DK West, a rapper and Zuke's estranged older brother, to halt their progress. West challenges them to a series of rap battles as a way to get back at Zuke for their poor history together. After that, they continue their revolution by facing child piano prodigy Yinu of the Natura District at her recital with her controlling Mother, and robotic boy band 1010 of the Metro Division District with their cyborg manager Neon J. on their citywide tour. Following the defeat of the former, the tension between Zuke and West reaches its peak as he angrily disowns his brother, much to both West and Mayday's shock and disappointment.

After claiming Yinu and 1010's districts, they move onto NSR's top artist and Tatiana's right hand, Eve in her Dream Fever District, who is revealed to be Zuke's former band-mate and ex-girlfriend. After patching things up with Eve, a final encounter between Zuke and West commences, and Mayday, fed up with their rivalry, works to help the two brothers reconcile by revealing that despite it all, Zuke still looks up to West. After they do so, West decides to leave Vinyl City for a time to ponder on things; Zuke thanks Mayday for her efforts. Mayday and Zuke head to NSR Tower to confront Tatiana, who intends to finish them to restore EDM's order on the city. After defeating her, Tatiana is herself revealed to be Kul Fyra, a former rockstar, leader of The Goolings rock band, and Mayday's idol who brought rock to prominence in Vinyl City. After the constant chaos of new ideas and disagreements led to the band's break up, Fyra grew a hatred of rock and an obsession with order and strength, leading her to create NSR and taking control of Vinyl City through EDM (for the people who favored it), adopting the identity of Tatiana. Tatiana mocks Mayday and Zuke, questioning what they planned to do to govern the city and deal with the consequences of overthrowing NSR, as rock is shown to be equal to EDM in terms of energy output.

Kliff then appears and is revealed to be a former hardcore fan of Kul Fyra's. Betrayed by Fyra's switch to EDM, Kliff used Mayday and Zuke as a way to make rock relevant again and, after being insulted by Tatiana again when she rejects his entitled way of thinking, he hacks the NSR satellite and sets it on a crash course into NSR Tower. Realizing that Kliff enabled them to have rock replace EDM as the new dominant music genre and that doing so would only start another music monopoly and make them the new NSR, Mayday and Zuke reject him and try to fix their mistake.

Mayday and Zuke team up with Tatiana to stop the satellite by helping the NSR artists reclaim their districts and using the collective power of EDM and rock to transform the NSR tower into a giant rock hand, destroying the satellite and saving Vinyl City. As the group celebrates, Tatiana, having a change of heart over her actions and regaining her love of rock, announces her plans to rebuild NSR to allow all kinds of music to be played in Vinyl City and offers Bunk Bed Junction a place in the new direction to help them. However, Mayday and Zuke reject the offer, instead deciding to "lay low" and remain indie due to their actions and to remind themselves why they play music for the time being. Before they depart, Tatiana gives Mayday her old guitar, which Mayday tearfully accepts.

The ending narration by Tatiana reveals that since then, Vinyl City has become a place where people can perform all kinds of music, free of discrimination or restrictions, and as a result, the city is shining brighter with more energy than ever before. The game ends with Mayday and Zuke stepping out to perform in front of their adoring fans as the narrating Tatiana wishes them the best.

When Louis encounters other characters, such as the doctor Michelle takes him to, they appear strange and monstrous. Aware of his condition, Louis tapes notes on household objects to remind himself of their usage, but this effort ends with him sitting in a sea of detached notes. Michelle notices the effect Louis' condition has on his increasingly abstract paintings.

The Monster Project

Devon (Justin Bruening) is an up-and-coming youtuber who makes fake videos about monster appearances. He has the idea of creating a series on his channel to find and interview real monsters by placing an ad on Craigslist. Bryan (Toby Hemingway), Devon's childhood friend, is spending time at Devon's house so his recovery from his drug addiction ends. Despite secretly using drugs, he is invited to participate in the project alongside cameraman Jamal (Jamal Quezarie).

The pair find three candidates to film for the channel: Steven (Steven Flores), a police officer who claims to be a skinwalker; Shayla (Yvonne Zima), a mysterious tattoo artist who claims to be a vampire, and Shiori (Shiori Ideta), a young Asian girl who claims to be tormented by demonic possessions. Devon hires Murielle (Murielle Zuker) to direct his documentary and Bryan to be her assistant. The team rents an abandoned house to gather the creatures. It is revealed by the property owner that satanic rituals have taken place there in the past, which does not intimidate Devon.

After starting to install their equipment in the house, Devon shows some artifacts linked to the mythology of each monster, with the intention of using them if necessary. It is revealed that he carries silver-like bullets to the skinwalker. They are shooting on the night of a lunar eclipse. The interviews happen, but things start to go wrong when Shayla reveals that Bryan is still using drugs, sparking a fight among the group. When Steven disappears and the eclipse occurs, they hear low growls and investigate until they find a Steven already turned in a room. The skinwalker attacks them until they lock him in a room, injuring Jamal in the process.

They have a brief encounter with Shiori being possessed by the demon before they flee from her towards the attic. Shayla appears in her vampire form and attacks Murielle, biting her neck and taking her to the attic quickly. Jamal saves them from an attack, fatally impaling Shayla with a stake through the heart. After seeing that all the doors and windows are supernaturally locked and the skinwalker is free to attack them, the group hides in the basement. Discovering that Shiori is there, not in her demonic form, they urgently try to find a way out before she gets possessed again. Bryan eventually manages to find a way out, but is stopped by a goat skull-masked shadow in front of him. Shiori is possessed again and attacks Bryan before being restrained and an exorcism is performed. When the demon temporarily possesses Murielle, he reveals his name: Baphomet. Shiori is killed on the pentagram and Jamal begins to feel sick from the wound that seems to be getting worse and worse. The skinwalker appears and fatally bites Jamal, forcing the surviving trio to flee the basement.

They lock themselves in a room, becoming separated from Devon. Murielle begins to feel sick and vomit blood, where she gradually transforms into a vampire. Bryan is attacked by her, but he manages to kill her with a stake through her head in self-defense. He manages to escape the house when he is thrown off the second floor by the skinwalker and takes refuge in an abandoned cabin nearby. He discovers several strange symbols and monitors that are recording everything that happened in the house that night. The skinwalker invades the place, but is impaled by a spear Bryan found, and dies. It is then revealed that Devon planned all this, as he is participating in a demonic sect and the goat-headed creature is a fantasy of one of the members of the evil group. Bryan is tied to a chair and forced by Devon to participate in a ritual to summon a powerful entity, which will likely be Baphomet. The bodies of Steven, Shayla, and Shiori and their victims are on a pentagram with Bryan. After giving his blood to the ritual, a shadow with horns and wings appears from the wall, roaring loudly before the camera stops recording.

Grave Robbers (film)

In the Mexican town of San Ramón, the executioner of an Inquisition-era Catholic church chooses Satan in favor of God, and attempts to rape a virgin in order to impregnate her with the Antichrist. He is caught and tortured by other members of the clergy, who demand that he renounce Satan. The executioner defies them, and is hacked in the chest with an ax by the archbishop; before he dies, the executioner declares, "Some day someone will come and wrench the ax out. Then I'll return with more power to father Satan's son in one of your descendants."

Centuries later, Olivia Lopez, a virginal descendant of the archbishop, goes camping with three of her friends near a cemetery that has just been broken into by a group of grave robbers consisting of Manolo, his psychic girlfriend, Rebeca, and their friends Armando and Diana. The quartet unearth a shaft that leads to the ruined basement of the abandoned Catholic church, where they discover treasure (including a small Satanic figure) and the tomb of the executioner; Manolo pulls the ax out of the executioner's chest. As the plunderers try to leave with their booty, their pickup truck becomes stuck in the mud, but they receive assistance from a pair of peasants named Pablo and Toño. The revived executioner reclaims the ax and uses it to kill the peasants, whose deaths are blamed on the grave robbers by Captain Lopez, Olivia's father. The quartet profess their innocence to Lopez, and implore him to investigate the tomb where they found the ax that was used to kill Pablo and Toño.

Lopez realizes that the real killer is still on the loose when two more people are murdered, so he races out into the wilderness to warn Olivia and her friends, accompanied by Olivia's fiancé, Raul. The executioner slaughters Raul and all of Olivia's friends, but is temporarily driven off by a machine gun-wielding Lopez. Lopez searches the executioner's tomb for answers, and finds an ancient book written in Latin that he brings to Father Jerónimo. At the police station, the grave robbers are broken out of their cell by their friends Andrea and Jorge.

The executioner uses supernatural powers to attack Father Jerónimo and kill Armando and Jorge before appearing in-person to butcher Andrea and Diana. He then kills Olivia's bodyguard and abducts her while the injured Father Jerónimo informs Lopez that the executioner is empowered by Satan, and must be vanquished using the ax and the Satanic figure before he can impregnate Olivia with the Antichrist. As Father Jerónimo holds a midnight mass, Lopez works with Manolo and Rebeca to save Olivia. Rebeca rescues Olivia while Lopez steals the Satanic figure and the ax from the executioner and uses them against him, robbing the executioner of his power; Manolo finishes the executioner off by blowing him up with dynamite. As the executioner burns away into nothingness, Manolo kisses Rebeca.

People in the Room

An unnamed seventeen-year-old girl living with her family on in begins filling much of her free time secretly observing three mysterious women in the house across the street. From her house, she can see the women sitting in their drawing-room. Fixated on these women, she searches their faces, imagining the stories of their lives.

Slowly, the clarity in time and space of the novel begins to morph into vagueness as the narrator is pulled from reality into her own imagination. The girl feels a sense of ownership over the figures across the street as she weaves a possible version of their lives. It is unclear whether she actually visits these ladies, but she describes what it is like to sit with them in the room, and the somber dynamic between them. She thinks they must be sisters whose lives have unravelled so far that they grimly await salvation or death. The girl changes from wishing death on the eldest sister to liking her as the story progresses. One of the sisters receives a bundle of letters from a man one evening which she thinks must be a former lover, and the young girl is filled with hatred that she might be left alone that way.

Her family slowly takes notice of her changing behavior and intervenes. She is sent to a nearby city for four days to clear her head. She is concerned she will miss something important across the street while she is gone, but realizes it could be an adventure to leave for a while and see what it is like when she returns. Her unhealthy obsession begins to relax a bit during her time out of town. However, it only builds anticipation for her homecoming and inevitable reunion.

When she gets back home, she notices the drawing-room across the street is dark. She asks her family if anyone in the neighborhood has died, but they reassure her that no one died. Distraught that her family seems ignorant to this grand change in the one thing that has consumed her life for the past months, she mourns. The book ends with a suggestion that the sisters moved out and put the home up for rent.

Casey at the Bat (1916 film)

As he is characterized in Ernest Thayer's poem, Casey (DeWolf Hopper) in this film was a "mighty" baseball player, the star and leading hitter of the town of Mudville's team. The motion picture's storyline, however, as described in 1916 reviews and news items, expanded considerably on Casey's personal life outside of baseball. He is portrayed living at the house of his sister (Kate Toncray) and brother-in-law (Bert Hadley) and working as a clerk and "errand boy" at Hicks' General Store in Mudville. Although he is a baseball hero in his community, Casey away from the playing field has few friends or admirers due to his clumsy, coarse behavior. Only a "half-witted" man (Frank Hughes) and the town's little children like the giant-sized athlete. Among the latter is Casey's six-year-old niece (Mae Giraci) to whom he is deeply devoted.

Despite his unattractive appearance and social ineptness, Casey is infatuated with a pretty, young woman in town, Angevine Blodgett (Marguerite Marsh). She is the daughter of the local judge, is cordial to Casey whenever she sees him at the general store or elsewhere in public, but she is in love with Bert Collins (Frank Bennett), a handsome "college man" she hopes to marry. Collins is also a skillful pitcher on the baseball team of Mudville's bitter sports rival, Frogtown.

Central to the film's story is a three-game series of baseball contests between Mudville and Frogtown. Mudville wins the first game thanks to Casey's hitting and fielding, but Frogtown wins the next one because Casey is unable to play due to burning his hands while preventing a fire at a community dance. By the time Mudville hosts the decisive third game against Frogtown, Casey is sufficiently healed to play. Unfortunately, his niece is seriously injured that same day when she falls out of a tree. Refusing to leave her bedside as she is being treated by the town doctor (Hal Wilson), Casey misses the start of the game. Later he hears townfolk calling for him, so he finally decides he must play and instructs his friend to stay with the girl. When Casey arrives at the ballpark, the game is in the bottom half of the ninth inning and Mudville has two men on base, trails by two runs, and is only one out from losing the series. Casey now steps into the batter's box, and the crowd's excitement grows, for the partisan spectators are confident the game will now be won by their home-run hero. Casey allows Frogtown's pitcher to throw two strikes against him, but just as the third pitch is being thrown, the slugger suddenly sees his friend arrive in the ballpark. Thinking he has come to the game with bad news about his niece, a distracted Casey swings and misses the pitch, striking out. After the game Casey is relieved to learn that the girl is better and will recover. Mudville's residents, angry about the loss, blame and shun their former hero. Humiliated and dejected, Casey returns to his sister's house, bundles up his few possessions, and then walks out of town along the railroad tracks, leaving Mudville forever.

FBI and FBI: Most Wanted crossover

Part 1: "American Dreams"

A school bus with 26 elementary students is hijacked, sending the FBI into a desperate race against to find them. With Maggie away on her undercover mission, Jess LaCroix of the FBI Fugitive Task Force and his team later join the New York team due to the fact that Sam Givens, one of the suspects behind the kidnapping is a man Jess previously arrested with Jess's team of agents Sheryl Barnes, Hana Gibson and Kenny Crosby meeting OA, Emily Ryder, Scola and Jubal for the first time. After a series of dead ends and even finding Givens dead in the back of a truck, they eventually determine that the kids are being held at an Amusement Park which Jubal identifies as "Play Town" due to one of the children, Owen Jamison using it via sign language which he used to communicate during a video message and that the man responsible for the abduction is Tyler Kane, a violent white supremacist. They apprehend Kane even though he's left wounded after OA shoots him, and find 25 of the 26 kids (Owen was saved earlier by his parents who cut a deal with the terrorist) with the FBI teams bringing the children to safety. However, Owen has gone missing, prompting Jess and OA to investigate. They head to the Jamison house and discover that Owen's father paid the ransom to the terrorists and got his son back. As Jess and OA leave the house, having finished their interview, OA grimly remarks that this isn't over. Jess then receives a video message from his young daughter, Tali, informing him that the food bank she volunteers at is being raided before her phone is taken away by a group of ICE agents with OA telling Jess, "Let's go".

Part 2: "Reveille"

As Jess works to get his daughter, Talia who's been taken on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant due to her skin color back from ICE even though he faces resistance from the ICE Director Austin Stevens, he, his team of the FBI Fugitive Task Force and the New York FBI field office continue searching for Emma Kane, the wife of Tyler Kane who escaped in "American Dreams" with Kane later making her presence known once more by killing twelve illegal immigrant women and injuring thirteen others. She also posts a video to YouTube, believing that her husband is dead while urging the white people to wake and rise, hoping to trigger a race war. Barnes, Jess and OA visit Tyler at the hospital and try to get him to tell them of Emma's whereabouts but Tyler refuses, informing the three agents that he and his group are stopping the white genocide and that the day of reckoning is coming. Meanwhile, Jess continues searching for Tali but finds himself getting nowhere and later receives an anonymous message on his phone asking him to read out the demands of a white supremacist group or Tali will be sent to South America and possibly jumped into MS13. Jess holds the press conference but goes off-script, refusing to read the message, something OA and both Assistant Special Agent in charge Jubal Valentine thank him for, Jubal believing Jess did it without the PC niceties. Jess then figures out that Emma wanted babies of her own to contribute to a whiter America but gave up due to the pills they were using having expired a year ago. OA and then arrive in, telling Jess and Barnes that the Kanes have been traveling up and down the country for the last while, their phones having pinned them at numerous locations including Boston and Buffalo. Scola and Hana later arrive into the conference room, revealing that they've uncovered a website that Stevens spends an hour on every day, one that is very far-right and has jokes and memes about illegal immigrants. Heading back into the main area, Jubal informs the agents and analysts of the website while also expressing his anger and disgust at the website, believing the bad apples posting on the site are bringing shame on every single federal employee before he orders the room to dig into the website. He then has Scola collect the name and pass them to the IG's office and Homeland Security. During one search, Kristen Chazal finds a photo showing Stevens and another ICE colleague of his fishing while using the white power sign. She informs Jess and the team of this while Hana reveals that another of the ICE agents, Michael Rees owns a detention centre in Georgia. Jess and his brother-in-law, FBI Special Agent Clinton Skye travel to the facility and after arresting Reese, Jess is reunited with Tali. Meanwhile, Barnes, Hana and Crosby confront Joey Carter, Bob Carter's son and engage in a gunfight that ends with the three agents shooting Carter. Searching the trunk, they discover a man's dead body with Hana revealing the man is a janitor with access and keys to thirty properties. Doubling back, the team dig into the victim's past and learn that he did community service in Ulster County with OA realizing that the group are targeting the citizenship ceremony where his aunt along with many others will be sworn in as American citizens. Racing to the building where the ceremony's taking place, OA is frustrated at his inability to contact his relatives while Jess believes that after OA shot Kane, the group did the same thing they did to Jess in revenge: they hacked his life. The team later arrive at the building and split up into separate groups: Posing as a couple on a jog, Hana and Crosby go searching for Emma's accomplices, Jess searches for Emma herself, OA discreetly escorts the people out of the building including his aunt under the pretence of offering photographs as Barnes and a team of FBI agents search for the bomb. Eventually, Hana and Crosby arrest Emma's two accomplices while OA finds his aunt and helps her to safety while Barnes and her team find the bomb inside a cooler down in a locker room, Barnes grimly informing Jess they're going to disarm it as there's enough explosives to bring down the entire building. Jess confronts Emma in a park and tries to get her to surrender but when it becomes obvious Emma is planning on going through with the attack in an attempt to prove her worth to Tyler while vowing she'll show him, Jess steps back, allowing Clinton who had been manning a sniper rifle to fatally shoot Emma in the head, killing her and allowing Jess to seize control of the remote she planned on using to set off the bomb, preventing the explosion from occurring. With Barnes's team having disarmed the bomb and all the main suspects either dead or in custody, the case has been solved. A while later, in another new location, possibly a courthouse, OA watches as his aunt is sworn as an American citizen with Jess and Tali, OA having invited the two of them to join him.

Vampires of Nightworld

''Vampires of Nightworld'' is a novel in which a vampire tries to become the master of evil by subjugating Nightworld.

Dézafi

''Dézafi'' mostly takes place in the rural Haitian village of Bouanèf but there are some scenes in Port-au-Prince. The core storyline focuses on a plantation owned by Sintil, the local oungan (vodou priest), and run by zonbis. The zonbis, humans brought back to life from a death-like state by an oungan to work, are essentially slaves. They cannot speak, cannot think, and have no more cognitive function than is required to work the plantation.

Sintil controls the zonbis with the help of his daughter Siltana and a hired man named Zofè. Sintil frequently reminds Siltana that she must remember to never give the zonbis salt because if they taste it they will wake up. At the beginning of the book Siltana is happy to follow her father's directives. However when a new zonbi named Klodonis is brought to the plantation she falls in love with him and loses interest in her normal duties on the ranch. She is devastated by the fact that Klodonis is in a permanent stupor and cannot reciprocate her feelings. Her frustration builds throughout the book until at last in desperation she gives Klodonis salt and restores him to being fully human. Unfortunately, far from being in love with her, Klodonis knocks her to the ground and immediately revives the rest of the zonbis, launching a rebellion against Sintil which eventually spreads to the village and culminates in Sintil's bloody demise.

The majority of the main plotline happens in the very end of the book. There are, however, several smaller plotlines sprinkled throughout ''Dézafi,'' which focus on other villagers in Bouanèf and how their lives are affected by Sintil’s presence. Jéròm, for example, is a villager who hides in his brother’s attic for almost the entirety of the book out of fear of Sintil. Another character, Gaston, uses his winnings from a lucky day at gambling to travel to Port-au-Prince. Unfortunately, once there he cannot earn enough money to make a stable living and languishes on the streets for years before attempting to return to Bouanèf just as the revolution is taking place. However when he sees the chaotic revolution occurring in the village he turns around and walks back towards Port-au-Prince. Still another villager, Jédéyon, lives alone in an old house with his niece Rita. Jédéyon has been abandoned by his wife and family who left for the United States without him and he constantly berates and chastises Rita, who takes care of him and the house. He dies before the rebellion.

There is an additional abstract plotline which centers on a series of cock fight (dézafis, in Haitian). When Sintil is at last apprehended and killed it is at one of these cock fights.

Star (short story)

The story centers on Rikio "Richie" Mizuno, a twenty-three-year-old actor disillusioned with fame and the film industry. He acts in a series of films where he plays a tough and hardened Yakuza gangster. Rikio prides himself for his appearance and physical build, and is adored by crowds of obsessive fans. However, in the story, Rikio is dominated by an anxiety about himself and he repeatedly expresses both fear and excitation over the inevitability of his aging. He finds emotional and sexual release through his relationship with Kayo, his personal assistant and lover. She is an unattractive women, but Rikio is drawn to her authenticity. She is honest in her characterizations of herself, including her physical appearance and her age, especially when compared to the youthful Rikio. She often mocks Rikio about his body, his flamboyant and flirtatious lifestyle, his stardom, the copious letters of fan mail he receives and the starlets he acts alongside in films. Her authenticity contrasts with Rikio's inauthenticity, with the masks he wears as an actor daily and the false public persona and bravado he has carefully cultivated for his fans and the media. In one scene, an aspiring actress ambushes Rikio while he is filming on set. She succeeds in persuading the director of the film to write a role for her into the script. However, her charm wears off on the director as she messes up the part and reveals herself rather unskilled in acting. After being cut from the script, she escapes to the dressing room and attempts suicide. In the dramatic scene, everyone on the set witnesses as she is saved by a doctor who she repeatedly attempts to push away to stop interfering with her suicide attempt. The studio's public relations team spins the story as Rikio intervening to save the woman's life. Kayo and Rikio later laugh about the incident, with Kayo mocking the actresses dramatic flailing and protestations.

The Hobbit (1967 film)

The film is short and lacking in detail, barely resembling the original story with the exception of the encounter with the trolls (renamed "Groans") and Bilbo Baggins's encounter with a creature called Goloom. A Princess Mika is introduced to avoid having Bilbo as a bachelor.

A dragon named Slag has ravaged a town in Dale called Golden Bells, though General Torin Oakenshield and Princess Mika survive. They ask a wizard, Gandalf, for help; he tells them that the Great Book prophesies Slag's death, for which they must have a Hobbit. They visit Bilbo at his home in Hobbiton; he refuses to help, but Gandalf and Mika persuade him. They set off and meet two Groans; Bilbo (not Gandalf, who doesn't come with them) tricks them to fight each other, and at dawn the Groans turn into trees.

Bilbo vanishes from his companions. He has fallen into a hole in the mountains occupied by Grablins, landing in Goloom's lake. He finds Goloom's magic ring and escapes. He crosses Mirkwood and reaches the Lonely Mountain. He manages to steal the Arkenstone from Slag's hoard, and uses a bow to shoot it into Slag's heart, killing him. Bilbo marries Mika and they return together to Hobbiton.

The Iliac Crest

The novel opens to an unnamed man reflecting on why he let a woman into his house on a dark and stormy night. The woman introduces herself as Amparo Dávila, and the narrator takes particular interest in her prominent hip bone, though he cannot remember this bone's name. Amparo approaches the narrator and claims that he used to be a tree, which greatly confuses him. Later that night, the narrator reveals that he was actually waiting for a different woman, who he refers to as the Betrayed; they were planning to end their relationship for good that night. The Betrayed shows up late and faints immediately upon arrival. Amparo begins to care for her and unpacks the Betrayed's possessions, saying that she will need to stay there for her recovery.

After a few days at the narrator's house, the narrator notices that Amparo is writing something, which she says is about her own disappearance. He begins to observe the two women and comes to the conclusion that they have created their own language structured around the word "glu." Amparo eventually asks him about his work at Serenity Shores Sanatorium, increasing his suspicions. One night, he decides to drug her in order to try to get answers out of her. She reveals that she is looking for information on a man who could have stolen a manuscript for her. The narrator recalls that the man tried to organize the terminally ill patients to demand death rather than life at the hospital, and he eventually committed suicide. Amparo says that she has not truly written since the day the man stole her manuscript. The narrator later goes to work and makes a deal with two women that he will give them a ride on a later night in exchange for permission to search through the records. He finds the man's files, which name him Juan Escutia. The narrator also stumbles upon Amparo's lost manuscript in the archives but does not reveal this to Amparo.

Later, Amparo approaches the narrator and tells him that she knows his secret: he is actually a woman. The narrator's paranoia and uncertainty about his own body and existence grow after this conversation, and he begins to constantly verify that he is a man.

The narrator follows through on his promise to give the two women in charge of the archives a ride. He accompanies them to a party and has sex with them. After leaving the party, he has the idea to look up Amparo in a phone book. He wants to contact the real Amparo and expose the false Amparo. He later calls her, and she agrees to meet with him. When he arrives at the true Amparo's house, he gains some memories of his life as a tree. After recovering from this experience, he begins to speak with Amparo, whom he calls the True One. He hands her the manuscript and describes the False One to her, and she claims that the False One must be one of the Emissaries. She gives him the manuscript back and tells him to give it to the False One, which he has no intention of doing.

One morning, a hospital security guard arrives at the narrator's house. The narrator is taken to the office of the Director, who confronts him about his illegal trips to the archives. To his own confusion, the narrator confesses to this transgression and is taken to the infirmary. He is released and returns home after being questioned. He later begins to spy on himself and on others and notices that people do not fit into his expectations of them. The female workers and patients do not fit into his ideas of femininity. He continues to investigate Juan Escutia, and the Director catches him searching through the files again. The Director then confronts him about his guests, which are unacceptable by the hospital's standards. The narrator explains some of the circumstances of the arrival of the women and asks the Director if he wants to meet them. The Director accepts this invitation. When he arrives, the narrator is shocked to learn that the Director knows the “glu” language. He begins to converse with the women in this language, leaving the narrator confused.

The True One calls the narrator and tells him to come over, addressing him as a woman. The next morning, the False One breaks down and claims that without True Amparo's writing, her work is useless. She acknowledges that she is not the real Amparo, but she says that the one whom the narrator calls the True One is also false. The narrator decides to visit the True One, who seems to have forgotten inviting him. The True One asks why it even matters if she is the real Amparo and claims that she does not know whether she is or not. She then confuses the narrator by saying that "he" will kill himself without specifying who "he" is, and she claims that she is “the only one left.” The narrator then realizes that he is before the Disappearance. He remembers reading her manuscript but has no memories of its contents. He runs outside to his jeep, which has disappeared along with Amparo's manuscript. He then goes to walk along the coast before eventually being discovered by the Betrayed. She says something in the mysterious language, and the narrator understands her and responds.

The narrator ends up in the hospital and is released. Upon returning home, the False One greets him and tells him that they are the only ones left. The narrator goes down to the beach with False Amparo and she utters the same expression about "him" killing himself, and a pelican inexplicably commits suicide. False Amparo gets up to leave and encourages the narrator to accompany her, but he refuses.

Later, the narrator can no longer remember the False One's face, but he does remember the name of her hip bone: the Ilium. He thinks that the Emissaries should have realized that this is the best way to discover the sex of a person in order to discover his secret.

Three Dangerous Ladies

There is no framing narrative, but each segment is introduced by an off-screen narrator who emphasizes the link of "dangerous ladies"

Mrs. Amworth

(Directed by Alvin Rakoff; written by Hugh Whitemore based on ''Ms. Amworth'' by E. F. Benson, from the 1923 collection ''Visible and Invisible''.)
Mrs. Amworth (Glynis Johns) is a vivacious, sociable middle-aged woman in a small English town which is currently experiencing a mysterious anemia epidemic. Amworth presides over neighborly garden parties and card games, but Francis Urcombe (John Phillips), a local student of the occult, suspects she may have something to do with the mysterious ailment which has begun afflicting a friend's nephew and others in the village. After he discovers her reaching through the young man's window, he reveals that he believes she is a vampire. He confronts her, resulting in her apparent death when she is struck by a passing car. She reappears to inflict further harm, however, leading Urcombe to the local cemetery, where he waits for her spirit to return to her grave and then exhumes her body and impales it with a pickaxe, killing her.

''The Mannikin''

(Directed by Don Thompson; written by Robert Bloch based on his story ''The Mannikin'', first published in the April 1937 issue of ''Weird Tales'')
Folk musician Simone (Ronee Blakley) returns to the house of her estranged mother, who is recently deceased. She refuses to attend the funeral or take any belongings, explaining that her mother subjected her to sinister ritualistic elements including seances as a child, before she was removed from the home. Shortly thereafter, she begins experiencing unexplained phenomena; she hears her mother's voice calling her name, starts suffering from disorienting dizzy spells and comes down with an excruciating pain in her back. She is referred to psychiatrist Dr. David Priestly (Keir Dullea), who believes her symptoms to be psychiatric in nature. Eventually, Simone returns to her mother's home, where the strange housekeeper Miss Smith (Pol Pelletier) conducts a ritual which causes a grotesque, childlike creature to crawl out of Simone's back. When Dr. Priestly arrives looking for her, Simone tells him to leave in a stilted manner. When he does, he is attacked by the creature in his car.

The segment features Blakley playing her song ''Need a New Sun Rising.'' Bloch's screenplay differs considerably from his original short story.

''The Island''

(Directed by Robert Fuest; written by Robert Fuest based on ''The Island'', by L.P. Hartley, first published in his 1924 collection ''Night Fears'')
A soldier named Lt. Simmonds (John Hurt) travels (with difficulty, since the boatman from the mainland is uncooperative) to the island mansion of his married lover Mrs. Santander (Jenny Runacre). A portrait of her hangs upon the wall. Upon arriving, however, the evasive butler (Graham Crowden) tells him that Mrs. Santander will not see him immediately, and while waiting he encounters an "electrician" (Charles Gray) (of whom the butler denies all knowledge) who eventually reveals his true identity: Mr. Santander, the cuckolded husband of Mrs Santander. The butler had told Simmonds that Mr Santander was away in South America. Santander invites Simmonds to a drink, where he rants at him that his pretending to be an electrician was "a charade" and that his wife had many lovers, of whom Simmonds was 'the least' and that she had only ever mentioned Simmonds once. He then shows Simmonds that he hurt his finger, and beckons him into another room to show him why. Revealing Mrs. Santander's lifeless body seated in a chair, Santander says he caught his finger while moving her dead body. He leaves the room. The butler comes in, appearing shocked that Mrs Santander is dead, and closes her eyes. He says he will phone the police. Simmonds, attempting to leave, notices that his revolver is missing a bullet, and suspects that Santander used it to murder his wife while Simmonds bathed. As he searches the house for the murderous husband, the butler informs him that the police are on their way. When he demands to know where Santander is, the butler replies, "Mr. Santander, sir? Why, he's in South America." A possible implication is that the two have conspired to frame Simmonds for the murder, although another implication may be that Simmonds has gone mad, killed Mrs Santander and imagined the presence of Mr Santander.

The Son of Laughter (novel)

Buechner relays the well-known Genesis narrative from the perspective of his protagonist, Jacob, whose reminiscences on his life are rendered somewhat cloudy by his considerable age.

Beginning in Mesopotamia, the narrator recounts his sojourn in the house of his uncle, Laban – a wealthy livestock owner, and worshipper of local deities. Jacob’s attempt to marry Laban’s beautiful youngest daughter, Rachel, is thwarted by his uncle, who tricks him into a union with his older daughter, Leah. Following several further years in the house of Laban, Jacob makes off with his wives, much of his uncle’s livestock, and, unbeknown to him hidden in Rachel’s tent, his household Gods.

Following an emotional confrontation with Laban, the young man is faced with the uncertainty of meeting his estranged elder brother, Esau, whose birth right the younger brother had previously stolen. Reflecting on the meeting that will take place the following day, as Jacob takes a night walk along the banks of the ford of Jabbok he is met by a mysterious figure, with whom he wrestles until early morning. Demanding that the figure bless him before taking his leave, Jacob realises that the man is not a man, but an angelic being. Against all prediction, Esau welcomes his brother with open arms, and allows him safe passage through his lands; Jacob’s rejection of the Mesopotamian gods in favour of his father Isaac’s god, ‘The Fear’, appears to have served him well.

The old man’s reminiscences then reach back beyond his return to Canaan, to his memories of Isaac. His father’s great trauma, drawn from his own father Abraham’s attempt to sacrifice him on a lonely mountain only to have his knife stayed by the hand of God, has become a central theme of Jacob’s life also. The familiar story is told ‘through the eyes of a child, now an old man, who lived it’, as Jacob recalls his own sense of fear, sadness, and revulsion at his father’s weeping as he relays the tale of his suffering. Jacob further remembers attending Isaac’s rituals as a child, entering into a murky and airless tent with him, there to watch his father communicate with The Fear with much wailing and self-flagellation.

The family’s famine-induced flight to Gerar, under the direction of The Fear, results in further discomfort and scandal. Afraid that Rebekah’s beauty might provide a motive for the ruler of this new land to kill him, Isaac lies to King Abimelech, presenting her instead as his sister. Isaac’s shame at having told this lie sees him retreat further into himself, and, as his health begins to fail, the scene is set for Jacob’s great crime: the theft of Esau’s birth right. Having outstayed their welcome, the family retreat from Gerar, and, as Isaac’s trauma takes further hold of him, Rebekah begins to quietly encourage her son to fool his father into giving over Esau’s promised inheritance. Despite his dread that he might be caught, or, worse, that he might offend The Fear, Jacob steals Esau’s birth right, or, as he remembers it: ‘It was not I that ran off with my father’s blessing. It was my father’s blessing that ran off with me’.

The subsequent flight to the house of Laban in Mesopotamia, and the startling vision of a heavenly ladder on the way, are vividly recounted by the old man, as he recalls his slow journey across the years back toward The Fear, and his decision to renounce all household gods in favour of the deity who has haunted and blessed his father and grandfather before him. He remembers Rachel’s barrenness as a source of great torment, made more difficult by the prolific fruitfulness of Leah, who bears the young Jacob many sons. Rachel’s introduction of her own maid, Bilhah, into the sexual politics is quickly followed by the appearance of Zilpah, Leah’s maid, who is likewise compelled by her mistress to bed her master. In the midst of the chaos, Rachel conceives and gives birth to a son, Joseph. Despite his own isolating experience of his father’s favour toward his elder brother, Jacob repeats the error of Isaac, elevating Joseph above all of Leah’s children. As the family escape from the house of Laban, unbeknown to Jacob they are heading towards his climactic encounter with God at the ford of Jabbok, and beyond to further years of suffering and joy.

The suffering begins with the misdeeds of his sons, Levi and Simeon. Jealous of their sister Dinah’s romance with a young Canaanite, Shechem, they murder the boy, his father, and the men of their tribe. Jacob’s grief is compounded by justice meted out by The Fear, who first takes Rebekah’s aged nursemaid, Deborah, then Rachel, as she gives birth to her second son, Benjamin. When Jacob finally returns to the land of his father, accompanied by Esau, it is to discover that Isaac is dying. Since the younger son is still in possession of the older son’s birth right, when Isaac finally passes away it is Esau, not Jacob, who must pack up his family and livestock and move on from the land that should have been his.

As Jacob’s reminiscences enter into their final stage, he reflects on the life of Joseph, imagining the life of his favoured son through his own eyes. Joseph’s dreams, and his father’s gifts of a silver ring and a robe, engender a maddened envy among his overlooked half-brother. Jacob dreams of his son, shackled and filled with terror at the bottom of a well, having been thrown there by the sons of Leah. He imagines Joseph being sold into slavery, his journey to Egypt, and his sojourn as the slave of Potiphar. He sees his son in a prison cell, following Potiphar’s wife’s attempt to sleep with him, and her subsequent accusation that the young man has seduced her. Following his successful interpretation of the dreams of two fellow prisoners, Joseph is given the opportunity to read the dreams of the Pharaoh. His deciphering of the king’s visions is stark, and from them he predicts the coming of seven years of plenty, followed by seven years of famine. When the famine brings Joseph’s brothers down out of Canaan in search of food, and they are ushered into the presence of their brother, now the Vizier of Egypt, they do not recognise him. Jacob imagines the final struggle of his favourite son, torn between a desire to bring reconciliation and a desire for justice and revenge. Joseph’s obedience to The Fear’s promptings, and his decision to reveal his true identity and bring blessing to his family, is a source of joy and wonder for Jacob, who, for the rest of his days, reflects upon the apparent fulfilment of The Fear’s promise to his grandfather, Abraham: that he had been chosen ‘to breed a lucky people who would someday bring luck to the whole world’.

The Eternal (film)

Nora and Jim are an alcoholic couple. After a night of drinking, Nora experiences a flashback and falls down the stairs of their New York apartment building. Though all right, she complains of headaches, and her doctor orders her to give up alcohol. For the sake of their son Jimmy, Nora and Jim pledge to sober up, but the doctor expresses skepticism when he learns they will be traveling to Ireland to visit Nora's elderly grandmother. Nora assures her doctor they will purge themselves of all their bad habits there.

In Ireland, Nora and Jim stop at a pub to get directions. While drinking, they run into Joe, one of Nora's old friends. He warns them that Nora's Uncle Bill has gone insane. Jim becomes jealous and starts a fight with Joe, and they are thrown out of the pub. Before they reach the mansion, Nora has another vision and crashes the car. Though none of them are injured, they are forced to walk the rest of the way. Alice, a young girl adopted by Bill, leads them there.

When Bill offers them drinks, Jim declines, much to Nora's annoyance. Bill reveals himself to be blind. After Jim makes several insensitive remarks, Nora takes Jim aside, accuses him of being drunk, and searches his clothes for a hidden flask. Though Nora is angry when she finds it is empty, Jim says they will restart their sobriety anew together. Bill suggests that Nora meet her grandmother alone, but she is confused and briefly becomes ill when he leads her to the basement. There, he reveals a preserved bog body, which he explains is a Druid witch named Niamh. Meanwhile, Jim encounters Nora's grandmother, who attacks him and wanders off. When Bill describes his belief that Niamh will come back to life, Nora returns upstairs, though she is surprised to see Niamh apparently open her eyes.

Nora tells Jim that they should leave the next day, as Joe was right about Bill. Concerned for their safety amid crazy relatives, Jim and Nora move Jimmy into their room. When they lie down, they discover Druidic relics hidden under their mattress. Bill and Alice look for Nora's grandmother and lead her back to her bedroom. When Bill returns to the basement, Niamh, now a lookalike of Nora, comes to life. After Bill kisses her, Niamh slits his throat, decapitates him, and goes upstairs. At the same time, Nora's behavior becomes erratic, and she tells Jim that she left Ireland for America after having an abortion.

Jim goes downstairs to drink, where he eventually encounters Niamh. Mistaking her for Nora, Jim kisses her. When he becomes uncomfortable with the idea of public sex, they stop and he lights cigarettes for them both. She accidentally sets her robe on fire, and runs outside. Jim follows, only to run into Joe. They argue, and Joe knocks him out. Joe enters the house and seduces Nora. Jim finds them, and Nora hits him as he attempts to pull her away from Joe. Then Niamh comes back inside, and seeing both Nora and Niamh, Jim becomes confused. When Niamh attacks them, the gardener, Sean, saves them by shooting Niamh. When she revives and kills Joe, they retreat to the kitchen, where they electrocute her, and her burning body falls through the floor. Alice explains that Niamh intends to steal Nora's body and soul. When Jimmy stands too close to the hole, Niamh grabs him. Nora jumps through the hole, and the others race downstairs.

Nora encounters her grandmother, who upon hearing that Nora is willing to sacrifice herself to save Jimmy, encourages her to do so. Nora and Niamh begin showing shared personalities. Noticing this, Jim uses Nora's alcoholism to keep Niamh occupied. Niamh eventually flees outside with Jimmy, where Nora confronts her. Remembering her grandmother's advice, Nora slits her throat and jumps into the ocean, as Niamh watches. When Jim arrives, Niamh says that everything is alright, as Nora has purged herself of the Druid's influence and taken over Niamh's body. Niamh – now Nora – and Jim embrace, and Alice says that Nora has finally shed herself of her fears and weaknesses.

Return to the Dark Valley

The novel is split into two parts and an epilogue. Part I ("Theory of Suffering Bodies" or "Figures Emerging from the Wreckage") serves the purpose of both introducing characters slowly as well as introducing the world in which the main plot takes place. When the Consul is speaking, the main plot is slowly revealed, but his narrative is broken up by Manuela's story told in a journal to her psychiatrist, Tertullian's expositions on his life, and the Consul's own biography on Arthur Rimbaud. In Part I, the reader is exposed to Manuela's dark history of sexual abuse and constant use of drugs and alcohol to numb her pain. As she progresses, she finds poetry as another escape from her past. Also found in Part I is Tertullian's eccentric narrative on his history which serves the purpose of persuading the Consul that he is in fact the son of the Pope and introducing the reader to his convoluted past. His narration also reveals his affinity for and mastery of torturing others and his history of schizophrenia. The Rimbaud biography gives an account of the well-known poet's ill-illumined life, from his early years to his death. His story serves as a constant, poetic theme that connects the stories of each of the other characters and adds another level of depth and richness to the story. As the Consul narrates the present, he begins in Rome, but he quickly receives a mysterious text from his old friend, Juana, that tells him to travel to Madrid and rent a hotel room while awaiting her arrival. So, he does so, and his story continues on in Spain. When he lands in Madrid, he discovers that the Boko Haram terrorist group has attacked the Irish embassy in Spain and is holding a large number of hostages. He becomes restless while awaiting Juana and keeping track of the hostage situation, so he finally goes out and explores the city, reminiscing on his past times of living and studying in the city. As he sits at a bar/restaurant, he observes a domestic dispute between what he perceives as two lovers engaging in an extra-marital affair, so he decides to step in to protect the woman. He is beaten severely by the man accompanying her, but after he manages to knock him out with an ashtray, the woman attacks him and renders him unconscious. He wakes upon in a hospital-prison hybrid, and after a short while, is joined in his room by Ferdinand Palacio, a former priest turned armed militant. Part I ends with the Consul narrating Palacio's life as he told it to him.

Part II ("Heading for the 5th Parallel" or "The Republic of Goodness") consists of a more fluid plot line that is only now interrupted by the continuing Rimbaud biography. The Consul discovers that the woman that he defended was none other than Manuela Beltrán, and after he is released from the hospital-prison, he returns to his hotel and is finally reunited with Juana. They depart from his hotel and travel to the apartment in which she has been staying with her son. Before long, the Consul reaches out to Manuela, and after they meet, Juana encourages him to invite her to the apartment, and the three become closer. Manuela reveals to them the journal for her psychiatrist, and after reading it, the Consul reflects upon his time in the hospital with Palacio. While doing so, he remembers the name of the man Palacio was after in Colombia, Freddy Otálora, and places him as the same man who had raped Manuela and killed her mother. He shares this with Manuela, and, desiring revenge, she asks for more information on Freddy, so Juana contacts a former acquaintance that owes her a debt to help them. The contact is none other than Tertullian, so after some quick reconnaissance, they discover that Freddy is still in Colombia. They quickly fly to Colombia and create a plan to give Manuela the chance to kill Freddy exactly as she's been longing to do. Juana then infiltrates a party, seduces Freddy, and creates the opportunity for Tertullian's men to extract him to another location. While Manuela cannot bring herself to torture or kill Freddy herself, she gives Tertullian permission to punish him, so Tertullian proceeds to mutilate Freddy, amputating several of his limbs and sprinkling acid on his face. Freddy lives and is found by the authorities, and Manuela, the Consul, Juana, and her son all fly back to Bogotá.

The epilogue depicts the four characters flying to Ethiopia and visiting Harar, the one place that Rimbaud had truly considered home.
