A woman named Li Ronan narrates the film, imploring the viewer to memorize an insignia and chant an incantation, to send blessings and lift a curse on her six-year-old daughter, Dodo. The insignia and incantation are interspersed frequently throughout the film to encourage the viewer to pray along. The events of the film are shown as a found footage in a non-linear manner.
Six years earlier, Ronan, her boyfriend Dom, and Dom's cousin Yuan, broke a religious taboo while documenting a ritual for their Internet channel. They went to the remote village of the Chen clan, Dom and Yuan's relatives, who practiced an esoteric Yunnan religion worshipping an ancestral deity called Mother-Buddha. The clan asked the three to submit their names with the incantation to the Mother-Buddha. A clan elder told Ronan that after her daughter was born, she must also submit her daughter's name; Ronan was surprised as she had not realized she was pregnant.
That night, the group spied on the clan performing the ritual, where a young girl seemed to be willingly prepared for a sacrifice. The unconscious girl, whose body was covered in runes, was left in front of a tunnel, which the group were keen to enter but the clan had said was forbidden. Ronan waited with the girl while Dom and Yuan entered the tunnel after destroying its barricades. Yuan later emerged screaming hysterically, while Dom's lifeless body was later seen being carried by the villagers from the tunnel. The footage from within the tunnel has since become damaged and cannot be played. After Dodo was born, Ronan left her at a foster care home and sought psychiatric help.
In the present, Ronan has recovered and is taking Dodo to live with her. Their house soon becomes infested by unexplained activities and Dodo is disturbed by a shadowy presence. Dodo gradually develops a debilitating illness and Ronan's mental health declines. When social workers arrive to take Dodo away, she and Ronan escape with the help of Ming, the sympathetic manager of the foster care home. They bring Dodo to a shrine, where a priest and his wife agree to risk their lives to exorcize Dodo. They forbid her from eating for the next seven days, but when her condition deteriorates and runes appear all over her body, Ronan feeds her. The priest and his wife are violently killed, and Ronan takes Dodo to a hospital.
Meanwhile, Ming goes to Yunnan to conduct more research into the Chen clan's religion and restores the damaged tunnel footage. As his health rapidly declines from watching the undamaged portion of the footage, he decides not to send the tunnel footage to Ronan. However, he later becomes possessed and sends copies of the tunnel footage to Ronan before killing himself by smashing his own head repeatedly on camera. In the footage, it is shown that Dom and Yuan reached the altar of the Mother-Buddha, whose face is covered with a veil. While trying to remove the veil, Dom got possessed and died after smashing his head. The footage also reveals that Yuan became possessed before being violently killed in the village by unseen forces.
Ronan confesses that she has been lying to the viewer all along. It is revealed that a priest in Yunnan had explained to Ronan that the Mother-Buddha is a malevolent entity, and that if you submit your name with the incantation, it means you agree to carry the curse. Instead of conveying blessings, the incantation actually serves to dilute the curse. When more people chant it, the curse gets spread out and the burden on those bearing it becomes lighter. The Mother-Buddha's face has to be covered because it is the source of the curse. Ronan, now covered in runes, returns to the altar inside the tunnel and asks the viewer for their name before revealing the Mother-Buddha's face on camera. She then gets possessed and smashes her own head on the altar. The film ends with footage of Dodo healthy and happy, implying that the burden of her curse has been shared with everyone who watched the film.

Ever since a disastrous event in Oliver's childhood, civil conditions and liberties are restricted in the name of peace and security, while a war rages on just south of Arkaine. Impoverished and ambitious, he seeks employment as a shipyard worker, and soon comes into contact with the struggles of ordinary people, allowing himself into the position of a consultant for the Whitestock Archives working on a government project. It is there where Oliver arrives at the conclusion that the society within which he lives is unfair and attempts to reconnect with his lost family members to recover a fortune, instead however becoming associated with a resistance group known as 'The Mandate', which finally assigns him on a mission to the capital of Greenbell.
Much of the story is focused on Oliver's relationship with his partner, Clandestine, and his internal cryptic discourse, portraying first-hand accounts of a monologue that follows him from early childhood to his death. While the majority of the story is set in a period referred to as the 'seventies' and shows Oliver to be a young adult, two exceptions exist. The first chapter takes place in Oliver's boyhood while the last chapter, a dream sequence, occurs in a small town near the Hudson Bay, portraying Oliver as frail and aged. This allows the reader to draw their own interpretation about whether Oliver as the protagonist truly survived a clash with the realm's regent, Cesar Black, or if he was successfully numbed by a previously applied poison.

Emma has sexual intercourse with Benjamín Olmo, the leading actor of the play.
The episode is set in a studio recording session for the original cast album of an ill-fated 1970 Broadway musical entitled ''Co-op'', with songs detailing the joys and pains of a New York City housing cooperative.

Despite being warned, Daulat keeps Chandramukhi at Panvel's farmhouse so that no one suspects their relationship. Dolly finds out about this during a Diwali party and arrives at the farmhouse to humiliate Chandramukhi and ask her to get out of his life. On the other hand, Nanasaheb reaches Chandramukhi's hotel room and forces her to confess that Daulat raped her, but she refuses, so Nanasaheb threatens to kill her mother. Dadasaheb realised that someone was doing this to his son-in-law on purpose, so he organised a meeting to admit that Dolly was in the picture with Daulat and that Daulat claim he has never seen Chandramukhi. To everyone's shock, Chandramukhi enters the room and reveals that she was raped by Nanasaheb, not Daulat, and she has never met Daulat. She concluded by thanking the reporters, who showed her such respect and requesting them to make some effort to peek into Tamasha artists' lives in the future as well.

The 597th are transported to the ice planet of Simia Orichalcae aboard the ship ''Pure of Heart'' to defend a promethium refinery from an Ork incursion. At the refinery, Cain discovers a report of several disappearances in the past few weeks. A meeting between the administrators and the 597th's officers goes poorly and Colonel Kasteen declares martial law, demanding that the 597th be left alone to combat the Ork threat.
After the meeting, Cain and a platoon of the 597th journey into the mining tunnels, where they briefly combat an unidentified hostile creature and retrieve the remains of one of the missing miners. Worryingly, they also discover a series of unmarked tunnels, predicted by techpriest Logash to possibly have been dug by the creature. Kasteen orders a platoon of the 597th to destroy the creature, accompanied by Cain and Logash. Later, while assessing the defensive lines of the 597th, it is discovered that a Gargant, an extremely dangerous Ork armoured fighting vehicle, approaches the refinery with an estimated arrival time of one day. Kasteen and Broklaw decide to detonate the underground mines to disable the Gargant.
In the tunnels, the group encounters the creature, who is killed in melee combat by Cain. A bemused Logash identifies the creature as an ambull, a desert-dwelling creature not native to Simia Orichalcae or suited to the planet's icy climate, concluding that the ambull must have arrived on the planet with the Orks. Deeper in the tunnels, the group exterminates the remaining ambulls with a single casualty and discovers Ork skulls in the ambull faeces, indicating an Ork presence in the tunnels. Worse still, the group encounters an inactive Necron tomb. Cain decides to barricade the entrance to the tomb despite Logash's vehement disagreements. The group continue to explore the tunnel network and eventually encounters more evidence of Orks in the mines, such as a destroyed Ork gun. The group resurfaces using an unmarked exit, where a surly Logash disappears in the snowstorm.
Cain and the platoon advance and witness Necrons in combat against an Ork patrol, who spot the platoon, forcing the platoon into combat. The Ork patrol is defeated with a single casualty in the platoon. The platoon returns into the tunnels to investigate the Necron threat and encounters several flayed Ork corpses and a single flayed ambull corpse. Later, the platoon engages in combat against Orks in the tunnels, sustaining grievous casualties. The group continue to traverse the tunnels, eventually making their way into a Necron tomb, where they evade detection from a Necron Flayed One. As Cain's group attempts to make their way to the surface, they regroup with Logash, who is in religious awe of the Necrons. The group are rescued by Sulla's platoon.
At a meeting with Broklaw and Kasteen, the group conclude that the refinery had been deliberately constructed in that region due to its proximity to the Necron tomb, as other regions on Simia Orichalcae contained richer deposits of refinable ice. At a later meeting with the 597th's command staff and the refinery's administrators, it is eventually discovered that the Ork incursion into the system alerted the Necron tomb; the ambulls originated from a portal the Necrons had opened in response to the Ork presence. Worryingly, this means that the Necrons will be able to supply their forces with countless reinforcements through the portal; undoubtedly, should the 597th attempt to fight both the Orks and the Necrons, they would suffer total casualties - a total evacuation of the planet's workers aboard the ''Pure of Heart'' is ordered. Cain decides to have the Imperial Navy destroy the site, much to the vehement disagreement of the techpriests. However, techpriest Ernulph makes an unfortunate conclusion; Imperial Navy ships would not be able to arrive in orbit for several months, meaning that a strike team has to enter the tomb and destroy the portal themselves. Cain is ordered to take a strike team into the tomb for that reason.
While the Necrons are distracted by combat against the Orks, Cain sneaks himself and a strike team into the underground tunnels, which suffer near-total casualties against the Necrons and fail to destroy the portal. Logash and Cain eventually decide to flood the underground mines and tunnels with the refined promethium as a distraction. They then evacuate with the rest of the 597th and the planet's staff aboard the ''Pure of Heart''. Federer, the captain of the ''Pure of Heart'', concludes that the promethium vapours which have diffused through the mineshafts have turned the entire tunnel network into a makeshift fuel-air explosive. There, Federer detonates an explosive hidden in the caverns in Simia Orichalcae. The resulting explosion destroys the entire mining network and eliminates both Ork and Necron forces from Simia Orichalcae.
Afterwards, Cain meets up with Amberly over a meal to discuss the incident, with Amberly concluding that Cain was lucky to have made it out alive.

Vasily Kuzyakin (Alexander Mikhailov), a forestry worker who is fond of pigeon breeding, lives in the countryside with his wife Nadezhda (Nina Doroshina) and three children: the eldest daughter Lyudka (Yanina Lisovskaya), who left for the city, but returned back to the village after an unsuccessful marriage; son Lyonka (Igor Lyakh), a cheerful guy and a lover of technology; the youngest daughter Olya (Lada Sizonenko), the favorite of her father.
Nadezhda, a woman with a rather grumpy character, considers her husband frivolous because he spends family money to buy expensive pigeons, and constantly reproaches him with this. An elderly couple lives next door to the Kuzyakins — baba Shura (Natalya Tenyakova) and uncle Mitya (Sergey Yursky), in whose family there are also constant conflicts. Uncle Mitya is a bit of an alcoholic, but his wife tries to keep him in a tight grip. Therefore, he uses every opportunity to drink secretly from his strict wife (for example, he arranges an impromptu funeral feast for her, although she did not die).
One day Vasily gets an industrial injury and leaves on a trip to the seaside for treatment. At the resort, he meets Raisa Zakharovna (Lyudmila Gurchenko), an employee of the personnel department of the forestry enterprise in which Vasily works. This city dweller, a flighty and exalted lady, fascinates Vasily with her amazing stories about psychics, telekinesis, astral bodies and humanoids. They have a holiday romance going on.
As a result, Vasily leaves the family for his new lover, which they tell his wife and children about together in a letter. After reading the letter, Nadezhda has a tantrum. On the same stormy evening, Raisa Zakharovna herself pays a visit to the Kuzyakins, thinking to find a common language and settle everything in peace. Raisa tells Nadezhda that she is an employee of the personnel department, and at first does not give details. The overwrought Nadezhda talks to her about her errant husband, but after finding out who she is, causes a scandal and rushes at her with his fists. The battered Raisa leaves with nothing.
After that, Nadezhda sinks into depression and is about to die. The children are also offended by their father, especially Lyonka, who threatens to kill him as soon as he sees him. At the same time, the life together of Raisa and Vasily does not work out, because they are people of "different social strata", in addition, Vasily misses his family. As a result, he leaves Raisa. His family does not accept him, so the main character is forced to live in a hut on the river bank.
After a while, Nadezhda, realizing that Vasily cheated on her largely because she got a nasty temper, forgives him. She also stops reproaching her husband for his hobby — pigeons. Fearing a negative reaction from Lyonka and the villagers, they meet secretly, but two months later, after learning that Nadezhda is pregnant, Vasily returns home. The return takes place against the background of the upcoming departure of his son to the army.
The episode begins with a traditional voiceover by general surgeon Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), where she states the body is a bundle of possibility. She states, "Every time we cut one open, we're faced with a series of decisions. Some choices are made for you. But for the most part, surgery is a choose your own adventure. When you're faced with the tough choices, it comes down to you. What can you live with? What can you leave behind? Right or wrong, you have to decide what you're willing to go down fighting for. The choice is yours." She carpools with sisters, Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) and Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone), but expresses annoyance over both Amelia's nakedness changing in the car, stating her children sit in that seat, and Maggie's denial over a wide-eyed expression reading a notice for Meredith's promotion as Head of General following Bailey's promotion as Chief of Surgery.
Dr. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) overhears Dr. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) inform Meredith she has been lowballed regarding her new salary as head of general surgery. The two reconcile the argument, as Alex pulls down his pants to "make a baby" and Jo laughs at the propesterousness of the idea, stating she is in the middle of her residency and he is never home. They take the subway to Leo's friend's house in order to have a brief sexual encounter; instead, his friend's roommate asks them to leave. After walking together for a short while, Leo leaves his phone number with Leroy, who he calls Boychick, but does not gather any of his contact information. Although he never receives a call, Leo becomes infatuated with Boychick, and tells his friends of their encounter, and of his apprehension because Boychick is under the age of consent in New York. Leo decides he is in love and goes out to search for him, scouring every place that Boychick mentioned. As he looks, he becomes more infatuated with the boy and imagines the two of them together and holding conversation.
Eventually, Boychick calls Leo to say they will meet again soon. Although he promised to show up on a specific day, he does not; later he calls Leo to say he is bringing an older man to Leo's home, where Boychick and the older man have sex. After the older man leaves, Leo walks with Boychick to the subway, and they ride in the same car together and make conversation. Boychick is cold to him and, fearing his uncle's retaliation—he does not want his uncle to know that he is gay—he asks Leo to leave him alone. Leo obliges, and once he returns home, he cries.

In the 2020s, Rose starts working as a caregiver at the Sunnyside Care Home. She is tasked with looking after an elderly lady, Charlotte Favell, but soon discovers that Mrs. Favell is unlike any of the other residents at the home. She is formidable and mysterious, and Rose is intimidated by her. One day, Mrs. Favell shows Rose an old letter written in 1921 by Lawrence Fenton to Arthur Conan Doyle. At the time, Conan Doyle had recently published photographs that cousins Frances Griffiths and Elsie Wright had allegedly taken of fairies in Cottingley. In the letter Fenton says that he, his daughter-in-law, Charlotte, and his seven-year-old granddaughter, Harriet have also seen and photographed fairies. He further states that they found a dead fairy and took it home as proof of their existence. Even though, many years later, Griffiths and Wright's photographs were revealed to be fakes, Rose is captivated by the letter and its implications.
Over a period of weeks, Mrs. Favell teases Rose with more letters. Having not received a response from Conan Doyle, Fenton wrote a series of letters to Edward Gardner, an associate of Conan Doyle. In these letters, Fenton reveals the true nature of fairies, that they are not pretty little winged people, but are the dangerous and vindictive creatures from folklore. He tells Gardner that he believes Charlotte is being held captive by fairies, and that the woman in his house is not his daughter-in-law, but a changeling. In another letter, Fenton tells Gardner that Harriet has gone to the fairies.
Mrs. Favell becomes more enigmatic and Rose is convinced she can read her mind. One day she tells Rose that Rose is pregnant even before she knows it herself, and that the baby's name should be Robyn. Later Mrs. Favell's daughter, Harriet, comes to visit, and Rose sees that she is also pregnant. Harriet sympathetically puts her hand on Rose's swollen belly, but Rose is shocked by her gesture. Rose begins to wonder if Charlotte Favell and her daughter, Harriet are the same Charlotte and Harriet in Fenton's letters. She also wonders if they are mischievous fairies.
When Rose gives birth, she is surprised it is a boy and not "Robyn", as Mrs. Favell predicted. Rose's boyfriend Paul suggests they call him Alexander, but she does not bond with the baby, who screams constantly and fights her. When Rose takes Alexander to visit the care home, Harriet is also there, and she discovers that Harriet's baby is a girl named Robyn. Robyn is beautiful and content and Rose is convinced she is her baby that Harriet took from her, and that Alexander is a changeling.
Rose confronts Harriet about Robyn and Harriet asks Charlotte, "Mother, what have you done?" Harriet then proceeds to explain to Rose that her mother has been playing games with her. Years ago, Charlotte's father-in-law murdered her young daughter, believing she was not a normal child. Charlotte adopted Harriet in an attempt to replace her lost daughter, but was convinced Harriet was a changeling. Her mother was later found to have Capgras Syndrome, and Rose wonders whether Charlotte wrote those letters herself in an attempt to explain what had happened to her. But Rose dismisses the thought, and is sure that Harriet's story about her mother is all lies to further confuse her. She is certain now that Charlotte and Harriet are fairies, and is determined to take back Robyn, her real daughter.

Jillian, a girl from a broken home, is picked up for shoplifting food by local police until Cheryl, the mother of Jillian's best friend Melanie, intervenes and decides to take Jillian in as her own child for the time being. This is a bizarre decision on Cheryl's part, Jillian thinks, knowing that Melanie has been suffering lately from an unknown illness that Cheryl says is genetic. Melanie is pale, often bedridden, and eats only milkshakes given to her by Cheryl. Often, Jillian overhears gossip from nurses and neighbours who find Cheryl's behaviour off-putting and creepy; Jillian always tells them off, pointing out how hard it must be for Cheryl to have to live with such an ill child. Melanie collapses and is taken to a local hospital in critical condition, where she grasps Jillian's arm and demands that her friend protect her little sister, Hillary. Presuming Melanie to be delirious, Jillian agrees, only for Melanie to start seizing in her hospital bed, dying there while her father, sister and Cheryl sob openly. Cheryl is the loudest voice of grief, as she not only screams and cries but also blames the doctors for forcibly getting law enforcement involved to remove Melanie from the family household, which she argues exacerbated the girl's illness.
Things begin to seem more suspicious as Jillian considers the incident. Cheryl, a former doctor employed at the hospital until Melanie's illness, has no desire to return to work and Hillary is starting to show the same symptoms that her older sister suffered from. Cheryl is also fawned over with sympathy when she reveals to her friends that Hillary may have the same condition as Melanie. Jillian notices the milkshakes that Melanie drank are being made for Hillary, and she's plagued with nightmares wherein a ghostly apparition of the now deceased Melanie warns Jillian to be careful. Jillian takes some of the substance being fed to Hillary to her lab technician friend, Will, a boy recently out of rehab after cocaine usage. Will initially wants nothing to do with helping Jillian, fearing that he could lose his job over it, but he changes his mind when he hears that Hillary is becoming ill. Meanwhile, Cheryl becomes suspicious and begins to regard Jillian as a nuisance, becoming enraged when Jillian tries to warn Scott, Cheryl's husband and the father to Melanie and Hillary, of the suspected medical concerns. Jillian is taken to jail after Cheryl frames her for drug theft, where her estranged biological mother comforts her and the two reunite. Jillian's mother reveals that she is clean and sober, and they both agree that they should try to start over as a new family together again.
Hillary's condition takes a turn for the worse now that Jillian is out of the house, with Cheryl forcibly making her drink more of the milkshakes than she had given to Melanie, all with the same apparent ingredients. Scott lifts Hillary from bed and tries to take her to the hospital while Cheryl claws at his arms and tries to pry the young girl away from him. Meanwhile, Jillian gets a telephone call from Will revealing that the special milkshakes for Cheryl's daughters contain high amounts of ricin, which is poisoning Hillary and which probably led to Melanie's eventual death. Hurrying to the hospital, Jillian and Will reveal the information to Scott. Now that her abuse has been discovered, Cheryl attempts suicide by injecting herself with a needle in the buttocks that contains ricin, but Jillian removes the needle and stays by the woman's side, pleading for doctors to come and help her.
The film's ending reveals that Jillian now lives with her biological mother, and that Will got to keep his lab tech job. Scott and Hillary are moving to a new state, hoping to start over. Hillary gives Jillian her email address so that the two girls can keep in touch. When asked where Cheryl is, Scott reveals that the woman is in a secured mental hospital, getting psychiatric treatment for Munchausen by proxy. This is ambiguous, as a final cut shows Cheryl in the hospital, obsessively gazing at imagery of her children and unable to let go of this ephemera.
Lew Archer is called to a facility for disturbed youngsters from rich families to locate Tom Hillman, who has escaped after barely a week. While Archer is there, Tom's father, successful businessman Ralph Hillman, arrives in a rage and is refunded his fee. Archer then drives Hillman back to his home south of Los Angeles and learns on the way that Hillman has received a ransom demand for Tom.
Once home, it is plain that tensions in the Hillman family will make finding what has happened to Tom difficult as both parents are wary about discussing the events that led to their son's committal. Hillman is a self-made man who rose to command in the navy during World War 2 and had only married his frigid wife Elaine for the sake of her money. He seems to relate more closely now to another young man, Dick Leandro, whom he takes along to help crew his yacht. Only Tom's girlfriend, Stella Carson, who lives next door, is prepared to provide any background to help bring him back.
Archer follows a lead to the bar where Tom used to play jazz piano, and then to the leader of the combo that played there. From him Archer learns that as well as Stella, Tom has been seen around with an older blonde and Archer suspects that she may have been used as bait by the kidnap gang. When he locates the woman, however, Archer discovers her apparently beaten to death in a motel and is himself shot at and clubbed by her husband when he tries to catch him. Meanwhile Hillman has paid the ransom but still has not heard from Tom.
From Lieutenant Bastian, who is assigned to the murder case, Archer learns that the husband has escaped in a car with Idaho license plates. From a Hollywood contact, Archer learns that the dead woman was once a 1945 starlet called Carol Brown who came from Idaho and had married a sailor. Her publicity photo had been taken by Harold Harley, then based at the Barcelona Hotel. The hotel is now shut down, but Archer eventually locates Harold in Long Beach. He too is from Idaho, but it is Harold's domineering brother Mike who was Carol's husband.
Bastian and Archer interview Hillman after discovering evidence that Tom may have been co-operating with Mike Harley. Hillman remembers that Harley had served with him in the navy, from which Hillman had Harley discharged for bad conduct, raising the possibility that the kidnap is a spite crime. Harley's trail is traced to Las Vegas, where he has lost all the ransom money gambling. Archer then heads for the Harley farm in Pocatello, Idaho, discovering there that the Harley father had had several stays in mental institutions and used to beat his boys sadistically. Archer also visits the dysfunctional Browns, who had allowed Mike to stay with them for a while. It was their daughter Carol whom Mike had run away with and married, leaving in the company of a crooked ex-policeman named Otto Sipe.
Stella tells Archer that Tom has asked her to meet him at Santa Monica bus station. Archer suspects that Tom has been hiding out at the Barcelona Hotel, where Sipe acts as caretaker. He and the manager of the service station opposite come across Sipe digging a grave for Mike Harley, who has been stabbed with a long knife, but Sipe is shot while trying to escape. Later Elaine Hillman admits that Tom has discovered that he was adopted and that Carol Harley was his real mother. The adoption had been arranged by Dr Weintraub, another of Hillman's former naval colleagues, and the child was really Hillman's.
Archer takes Stella to meet Tom in Santa Monica and they all return home, where Bastian arrives to reveal that Carol had really been stabbed with the same knife that killed Harley and that Hillman had purchased it. Leandro is also identified as having driven to the hotel on the night of Harley's killing. Eventually it emerges that he was driving Mrs Hillman, who had been responsible for murdering both Carol and Mike. Archer refuses to be bribed to keep quiet and she stabs herself with her own knitting needles.

In a voice-over Sergeant Harry Hansen says he will never forget how the case began. On January 15, 1947 Hansen and Sergeant Finis Brown were assigned to investigate a mutilated corpse found in a Los Angeles vacant lot. A young unidentified woman had been bisected, and all of her blood had been drained from her body.
In a February 1943 flashback 18-year-old Elizabeth Short of Maine tells her grandmother that her father had sent money for her to go to California and stay with him. She hopes to become an actress. When Elizabeth arrives at her father’s home he states he just sent her money, but wasn’t planning on her living with him. He grudgingly agrees she can stay for awhile if she does the housework. In a voice-over Elizabeth narrates the beginning of a letter to her grandmother, saying her father is happy to see her, and all is going well.
Sergeants Hansen and Brown learn the murdered woman had been cut in two with surgical precision, and that someone with medical or mortuary experience committed the crime. The murder case is on the front page of all the newspapers, and reporters are seeking gruesome details.
In additional flashbacks Elizabeth’s father is angry with her for staying out late each night, and not doing any household chores. He gives her money to return for Maine, but after he leaves for work she packs her suitcase and sets out to find a new California home. She obtains a job at an army base PX, and tells her supervisor that she is the widow of a major who was killed in the war. Elizabeth writes her grandmother that she is making progress in her film career. After a couple of months she quits her PX job.
Hansen sends the murder victim’s fingerprints to Washington D.C. They don’t match any of the local fingerprint records, but he hopes the woman had a police record somewhere.
In a 1944 flashback 19-year-old Elizabeth is arrested for underage drinking, and in 1947 her fingerprint records allow the murder victim to be identified. A newspaper reporter learns that Elizabeth Short was known at a diner as the Black Dahlia, due to her black hair and habit of always wearing black clothes. The name is used in news stories, numerous people confess to killing the Black Dahlia, but none of the self-proclaimed killers can tell three facts about the case that are being kept from the public.
The police recover Elizabeth’s suitcase from a bus station locker. Hansen and Brown open it and find a cupie doll with a handwritten message of "Love, Doc". There were black clothes, letters from Elizabeth’s grandmother, and a stolen address book with the name of wealthy movie theater promoter Miles Harmonder on the cover.
With more clues to go on Hansen learned Elizabeth stayed at various homes for short periods of time. She was always secretive about her life, went out with men every night, and she never paid any rent. At one of the homes she said she wore black because she was a war widow.
A newspaper editor received a phone call from a man claiming to be the murderer of the Black Dahlia. The caller gave information that the police had not released, and he promised to send the editor a package. When the package arrived it contained Elizabeth’s Social Security card, along with other forms of ID. The man never contacted anyone again.
Hansen tracked down Dr. Coppin, a hospital intern. The doctor stated he had been in a bar drinking with Elizabeth on two occasions. He bought her the doll when she asked for it, but she was the one who had written Love, Doc on it. After the second time he had been drinking with Elizabeth he helped her out by driving her to the Mayfair Hotel, for she said she would be meeting someone there. Witnesses remembered Elizabeth going into the hotel, then leaving. She was seen placing her suitcase in a bus station locker, and then she returned to the hotel and sat in the lobby for several hours. Finally she went outside, and a taxi driver who’d been parked in front of the hotel saw her walking down the sidewalk.
In a voice-over Hansen said they could find no one who saw Elizabeth during the last six days of her life. He and Sergeant Brown spent twenty years following up possible leads on the still-unsolved murder case, before they both retired. He believes the man who sent the package to the newspaper editor was Elizabeth’s killer. Dr. Coppin provided an alibi for the night of the murder. Miles Harmonder, whose address book was stolen by Elizabeth, committed suicide. Hansen wonders if anyone listening to him knows something about the murder that he doesn’t know.
When a socially awkward Midwestern woman inherits a porn studio, she plans to take the money and run - until her dead father and a band of misfits force her to face her fears, and learn that misfits are people too.
The book is a semi-autobiographical account of Cocteau's life. An unnamed narrator grows up and develops his sexual identity. He recounts stories of having crushes in school in Toulon, one-night stands—including his first sexual encounter in a park near his father's house, and his gay identity being acknowledged after watching two boys have sex —watching nude people masturbate through one-way mirrors, and casual sex at bathhouses. The narrator is never accepted by those around him, and he retreats from society as a whole.

Taryn (Freya Tingley) is starting her first day as a high school senior. Her overbearing mother, Heidi (Peri Gilpin), pressures her constantly with everything from SAT tests to the prom, even going behind Taryn's back and switching her free period in her schedule to the yearbook club, which Taryn has no time for, adding further strain to her day. Taryn confides in her nonconformist best friend Elena (Beverly Ndukwu) that she has a crush on her childhood friend Ryder (Mitch Ainley), but that she doesn't think he feels the same way, even though he recently broke up with his girlfriend of three months over the summer. The most popular girl in school, Courtney (Ferron Guerreiro), informs Taryn and Elena that a new girl has arrived to their school, named Nina (Alex Steele), who according to rumour was into some "hardcore stuff". Courtney is a bully, and so the girls take little notice of her words. When Taryn enters the girls' washroom alone, she comes across Nina passed out on the floor, lying beside one of the toilets, but Nina assures her that everything is alright and begs her not to tell anybody. Taryn covers for Nina by telling Courtney that Nina was just helping her look for her contact lenses.
Taryn and Nina soon become friends, much to the surprise of Elena, who finds Nina loud and rebellious, whereas Taryn is studious and athletic. Nina lives with her mother (Julia Arkos), a cougar who is rarely ever home and who goes on dates with random younger men, leaving Nina to her own devices. Taryn finds Nina's lack of parental supervision exciting, whereas Nina wistfully admires Taryn's more nuclear family unit. After an embarrassing encounter with Ryder at a coffee shop when Courtney interrupts, Taryn complains about her life, after which Nina shows her "the choking game", a way in which one can get high without actually using drugs, through a method of pressing their hands around their own neck until they pass out, or by having a proxy do it. This comes in use for both girls, who can choke each other out so that one can keep watch while the other is unconscious, but it nearly backfires twice: at one point Taryn's mother hears the girls panicking and suspects that something strange is going on, and at another point, Courtney catches the pair in a hidden corridor of the school gymnasium. Nevertheless, the "game" persists, and Taryn becomes more rebellious, losing touch with Elena, talking back to Courtney, snapping at her parents, dressing differently and letting her high grade score decline, which will destroy her chances of going with Elena to Michigan State University the next year. Nina and Taryn crash Courtney's autumn house party, where Taryn attempts to force herself on Ryder, making a fool out of herself and breaking off her birthday plans to go out to a restaurant with Elena. Elena confronts Taryn, who in turn yells at her and flees.
After Taryn's mother and father (Ray Galletti) confront her over her poor behaviour, Taryn hopes to start things over. While driving to Nina's house, however, she comes across an ambulance and a group of paramedics removing an unconscious, bleeding Nina from the front doorway on a stretcher while Nina's mother sobs hysterically outside. When Taryn returns to school, everybody avoids Taryn, except for Elena, who says that while they're no longer friends anymore, they may be friends again one day. Taryn comes across Courtney in the bathroom, who has taken up the "game" herself. Courtney insists that she won't "end up like Nina", who has failed to return to school at all. Taryn tells Courtney that she's there if she needs to talk. Courtney, despite walking off in a huff, has tears down her face and nods her head in affirmation. That afternoon, Taryn and her mother go to Nina's house, where Taryn goes up to her bedroom and finds Nina with severe brain damage, dressed in a pair of black elastic incontinence pants and unable to walk properly or focus on anything. She attempts to stand up, but nearly collapses. Taryn reaches out to steady her, only to discover an enormous purple bruise over Nina's left eye that spans most of her head. Nina attempts to speak, but can only make guttural noises because she has permanently damaged her vocal cords. Taryn apologizes to Ryder for her behaviour later that day, and reveals to him that Nina hit her head while playing the "game", rendering her indefinitely disabled. Ryder accepts Taryn's apology, and the two start a romantic relationship.

The novel is written in two sequences, the first is a monologue by Empress Carlota while she was locked up in the Bouchout Castle in Belgium, sixty years after the death of Maximilian, shot at Cerro de las Campanas, Querétaro, on June 19, 1867, as she fell into madness after his death. In this monologue, Carlota explains the story of her love for Maximilian, as well as the times of the Second Mexican Empire and European royalty.
At the same time, del Paso resorts to various genres and techniques to give voice to the different parties involved in the conflict, among them epistles between members of the royalty, historical chronicles, which have as settings the Miramare Castle, Mexico, France, Germany, Vienna, among other places, and characters such as Charles de Lorencez, François Achille Bazaine, Élie-Frédéric Forey, Miguel Miramón, Tomás Mejía, Benito Juárez, Porfirio Díaz, Mariano Escobedo, Gaspar Sánchez Ochoa, Franz Joseph I of Austria, Napoleon III, among other historical participants in the conflict.
Both sequences take turns, changing the name of the chapter of the narrative sequence while all of Carlota's monologues are always titled "Bouchout Castle 1927".

The story opens at the funeral of Bert Barricune, "who had been nobody." A young reporter, attending in hopes of a story, notes the entry of two notable mourners, Senator Ransome Foster and his wife.
The story goes back in time to tell the tale of "Ranse" Foster, a young drifter from the East who is set upon by a gang of three men, who rob and beat him. Near death, he begs for water from Bert, a cowboy who happens by.
Bert puts Ranse on his horse, walks him 5 miles to the closest river, brings him a reviving hat full of water and sets him up a camp to help him recover.
Three days later they meet again at the local jail in Twotrees, a nearby town. Bert is being released from a night in the cell, and Ranse has come to report the gang who beat him and left him for dead. The Marshall recognises the description of the gang leader as Liberty Valance and tells Ranse there's a reward on Liberty's head.
Ranse begins hatching a plan to trap Liberty. He goes to the local Elite Cafe and begs a meal in return for splitting wood. Hallie, a waitress there, tells him there's work as a swamper (handyman) at the Prairie Belle, a local saloon.
He works at the Prairie Bell, gaining a reputation as a "vain and haughty, condescending, cringing sort of man". He buys a Colt 45 and plots his revenge, practicing target shooting obsessively before eventually being fired from the saloon for oversleeping too often. Jobless, he returns to Elite Cafe where Hallie the waitress takes pity on him and feeds him from the back door.
Bert, a cafe regular, warns him against becoming too friendly with "my girl" Hallie and tells Ranse that people are talking about him in Dunbar, the next town over where Liberty Valance resides. He suggests Ranse applies for a job as a clerk at the general store in an attempt to stop him begging food from Hallie.
Ranse is taken on at the store and continues to practice shooting. At Hallie's suggestion, he starts Twotrees' first school. Hallie longs to learn to read and write and, realizing it would cause trouble if he were to teach her alone, he starts the school so Hallie can learn alongside the town's children.
One day, while Ranse is out practising shooting, Bert appears and tells him that Liberty has come to town, showing off his own shooting prowess before departing.
Ranse rides into town and goes looking for Liberty Valance. As he passes the Prairie Bell he's told by Joe's right hand man that the Marshall has left town, and he motions up the street to where Liberty is advancing.
They approach each other, Liberty draws and they both fire. Ranse is shot in the shoulder, hearing two shots to his one before he passes out. When he wakes Bert, kneeling over him, tells him that Liberty Valance is dead.
Ranse is charged with disturbing the peace and fined ten dollars. He suggests to Bert that the reward for Liberty should cover the fine and Bert tells him not to collect as he (Bert) was the one who fired the shot that killed Liberty.
When Ranse asks why Bert has helped him, Bert replies that he will only ever be Hallie's friend while Ranse is around. Ranse responds: "Then I shot Liberty Valance", and decides to leave town.
Hallie visits Ranse and, upset at hearing his plans, convinces him to stay. Despite owing Bert his life twice over, he stays and marries Hallie and they have four children. He becomes a lawyer, defending Bert over the years on charges from drunkenness to stealing cattle - keeping a promise to himself to protect Bert and keep him out of trouble. Eventually, he runs and is elected judge of Twotrees.
Over the years, Bert bates Ranse into running for powerful offices (judge, state legislature - which he loses when the opposition uses the unlawful killing of Liberty Valance to slander him - and finally governor). He tells Ranse it's because he knows Hallie wants to see Ranse succeed in life and what Hallie wants, Bert is going to try to see she gets. Ranse, who had never wanted to run for office, replies grimly: "So am I."
Ranse does eventually become a Senator and the story concludes with Ranse and Hallie heading home after Bert's funeral.

Honor Rose is an ambitious senior at George H.W. Bush High School who has dedicated her entire academic career to being accepted into Harvard University, hoping to escape her mediocre middle-class life. Part of this plan (which also includes feigning several interests) involves earning a letter of recommendation from her guidance counselor, Mr. Calvin. Calvin, a wannabe musician with an inappropriate crush on Honor, has connections to the university and tells her that he is considering her plus three other students for the recommendation. She quickly deduces who they are: star athlete Travis Biggins, creative introvert Kennedy Park, and the awkward but academically brilliant nerd Michael Dipnicky. Honor resolves to eliminate all of them from contention with the help from "fake" friends Emma and Talia.
Honor's master plan begins when she joins the theatre club and persuades them to put on a production of Mary I of England, hoping the project will distract Kennedy and cause her grades to sink. Honor also persuades Travis to join the production, hoping to sabotage his athletic prestige and push him into pursuing his closeted crush on one of the actors. Believing that Michael is interested in her and bad at talking to girls, Honor makes herself his lab partner and accepts his requests to follow her on social media. In her attempts to charm him, Honor invites Michael to her house for study sessions.
During their first study session, Honor tries to distract Michael by dressing scantily and insincerely flirting with him, but Michael ends up charming her instead with his kindness and their mutual interest in ''The Handmaid's Tale''. Honor eventually proposes studying at Michael's house next time, but he is hesitant. She soon discovers that this is because Michael lives in foster care. Her increasing attraction to Michael is fully realized when they sneak into a fancy house after school. Michael kisses her, and they start a relationship which culminates in Honor publicly kissing him, shocking her classmates. Meanwhile, she begins to genuinely enjoy the theatre club and making real bonds with Kennedy and Travis. Calvin also starts to make stronger sexual advances to Honor, even going as far to sexually proposition her for the Harvard recommendation, an offer she refuses.
Honor eventually decides to let Michael have the recommendation, as she finds herself both feeling sorry for him and happy with her new circle of friends. One day, Michael texts her during lunch, saying he is alone at home. Honor goes to Michael's foster home and discovers he does not live there, but at the fancy house which they had "snuck into" earlier. She discovers that Michael is not only very well off, but just as manipulative as she is. Michael reveals that he duped Honor the entire time from when they first started talking, planning to get her to fall in love with him so she would concede the Harvard recommendation for him. A shocked and heartbroken Honor breaks up with Michael and leaves.

In 1921, Rie, daughter of a simple carriage driver, is introduced as a maid into the household of tyrannic company commander Kito, his two sons Ichiroji and Gojiro and his sickly wife. Following his wife's death, Kito is forced to marry Rie, who expects a child after he raped her. Rie gives birth to a son, Yoshitoshi, and later to a second son, Tomohide, who are both treated with disdain by Kito and his sons from his previous marriage. Also, she and her sons are forced to live in a small, separate room in the Kito family mansion.
One after another, Kito's sons follow in the family tradition and start a military career, although Yoshitoshi only reluctantly so. When Kito learns that Tomohide, still a student, and young maid Haru have fallen in love, he furiously fires Haru and sends Tomohide to his former nanny Masu. Masu tells Tomohide that Haru was sold into prostitution by her family, and Tomohide runs away from her home, his whereabouts remaining unknown.
One year after the end of World War II, Kito and Rie live alone in the deserted family mansion. When Tomohide, the sole survivor of the sons, returns home, Kito wants to throw him out again, but Rie, finally talking back to him after almost 30 years of obedience, tells Kito that the house is also hers and her son's.
The story's unreliable narrator describes reading a book and being surprised by phrases such as "his eyes roved around the room", "lost his head", and "lacking in brains." He interprets these phrases literally and concludes that the book's characters are aliens who can remove parts of their bodies with no ill effects. The casual way these supposed events are treated leads to a further assumption that the book's author is familiar with such aliens, and that the aliens must therefore be extant on Earth.
The narrator concludes that an invasion of Earth is under way, but is unsure of how to proceed. He tries unsuccessfully to warn the government but decides not to tell his family, and ultimately chooses to ignore the threat. He ends by using a similar idiom as a punchline: "I have absolutely no stomach for it."
Detective Lord Darcy is called upon to investigate the apparent murder of Count D'Evreux, who was found shot in his bedroom. A gun is found hidden nearby, and Darcy's assistant, sorcerer Sean O'Lochlainn, determines by magic that it was used to kill the Count. Further investigation reveals that the late Count had had frequent liaisons with young women of the area, who he would invite to visit via a hidden entrance, making it difficult to discover who might have visited on the night he died.
Laird and Lady Duncan are visiting the area from Scotland. Lady Duncan has previously had an affair with the Count, and visited him before his death. The gun appears to belong to her. Her husband is found to have been practicing unlicensed sorcery so, although the actual killing did not appear to have involved magic, both are suspected.
Darcy and O'Lochlainn decide to try using optography to extract an image of the killer from the dead Count's eyes. It is explained that such an image can be extracted in certain rare circumstances, but the images are unreliable and cannot be used in court. The process provides a clear image of an unusually beautiful woman in the act of shooting a gun at the Count, but her face is not recognised.
Lord Darcy interviews the Count's sister, who stands to inherit his position. She tries to tell him something about the case but Darcy stops her and lays out the evidence he has collected. On the night of his death, the Count had a heated argument with Lady Duncan in which she pulled out a gun and he threw her out of the room, leaving the gun on a table. Laird Duncan, misunderstanding the situation, tried to kill the Count by sorcery but found he was already dead. The killer was the unknown woman in the picture, who Darcy says will be found.
Privately, Darcy tells his employer, Duke Richard of Normandy, that he has in fact identified the killer. The Count had had an obsessive attraction to his own sister for years, but had kept it secret. After the argument with Lady Duncan he invited his sister to his suite and assaulted her, and she shot him in self-defence with the gun. The picture that had been extracted from the Count's eyes did not match the Countess' appearance because it had been based on his internal, idealised image of her. Such pictures are always affected by the victim's mind, which is why they are inadmissible in court.
The details are kept secret to protect the family's reputation. The Duke comments that the way the Countess defended herself and then hid her involvement shows her judgement and ability to act under pressure, which will aid her in her new role.
An Shuyu imagnines that her wedding with Xu Nuoyan will be simple. However, their wedding is interrupted by various things, such as overbearing in-laws and a jealous best friend.

Louise (Toke Makinwa) a boutique owner also in Donna's employment, is shocked upon discovering her America-based husband Aaron (Uzor Arukwe) has flown into Nigeria to surprise her and their two daughters. She manages to conceal her secret profession, but Aaron is increasingly suspicious when she frequently leaves their residence late at night under false pretences to meet up with her regular customer Fadi (Cezar Obayan), a wealthy Lebanese man. Donna advises her to send Aaron back to America before he discovers the truth, but he extends his stay.
Jemma visits her former friend Donna who has not forgiven her for breaking the escort agency's golden rule: ''Never give your love for free''. Jemma's terminally ill husband, Desmond, faces life-support withdrawal unless his wife is able to settle his medical bills. She initially turns down Donna's request to return to prostitution in exchange for the money, but eventually gives in after running out of options. At the party she catches the eye of Alexander (Lynxxx), a business associate of billionaire Chief Nkem (Ejike Asiegbu) with whom Donna enjoys the occasional dalliance. Jemma and Alexander spend the night together, and instantly begin a relationship. Soon after, Desmond's life support machine is switched off.
Six months after Emma completes finishing school and a business course in Ireland, Segun uses his connections to secure her a job as a bank manager, but refuses to interfere when his daughter publicly exposes Emma's past, and humiliates her further by asking her to strip for him with Zeribe also present. Enraged, she storms off, but Zeribe suggests she obeys Segun's orders lest he replaces her with another woman. She reluctantly agrees, but not before seducing Zeribe, and Segun hears them having sex under his roof but does not retaliate. Trouble also ensues in Louise's home after Aaron finally stumbles on his wife's secret rendezvous with Fadi, and he flees back to America with their daughters, demanding their mother pay child support or face his wrath.
Jemma murders Alexander when she catches him sexually molesting her son, and enlists the help of Donna and Tommy (Taymesan Emmanuel), Donna's gay personal assistant, to dispose of the body. Donna receives more devastating news when Hell (Segilola Ogidan), an employee from a wealthy family, dies of a drug overdose after discovering she is pregnant without knowledge of the father's identity. At the funeral, Nkem reveals Alexander was his accountant, but as Jemma was romantically involved with him, she is considered a suspect after a hard drive with his company's billions disappears. Donna travels to Beirut where she begs her mentors, Doris (Gloria Anozie-Young) and Thelma (Dolly Unachukwu) from the original movie, to plea with Nkem who has started to harass her girls, but both women are unwilling to co-operate.
Upon Donna's return to Nigeria, the escorts finally locate the drive (Alexander had worn it as a pendant), and with the assistance of a Francophone hacker who demands sex with Emma in exchange for his service, they discover the drive contains a larger sum than anticipated. However, Zeribe double-crosses the women and secretly plants a duplicate on Emma who, in a repeat of events at their first meeting, hides the actual drive in his pocket, and Nkem's henchmen cart him off, his pleas of innocence falling on deaf ears. The film concludes with the revelation that Donna had secretly duplicated the flash drive containing part of the money.
